India Grill offers up an authentic vegetarian friendly Indian menu that is all made from scratch.
I went for the lunch special, which is advertised as being $6.99.
When I looked at the menu it turned out that only a select few veggie curries are that price, and decided to go with the $9 lunch tandoori chicken and dal.
The chicken was offensively, shamelessly overcooked and dry as hell. The rice wasn't even very good, and the dal was very starchy.
The kicker came with the coffee, which I looked at, and thought: "if this is instant coffee I wouldn't be surprised" and, of course, it was. Jesus.
I don't know what the rest of their food is like, but if they want people to come back, do not insult and rip them off with poorly cooked food and instant coffee.
Its too bad because I do try to support the less busy restaurants on fourth, but sometimes they make it hard.
The decor is a bit tacky, but the service is good and the food is good. I assume because the mom's or wives are cooking in the back. Its a bit more than what I would pay - but its good and I'll certainly come back.
India Grill has really tacky decor, and the music is an acquired taste, but the food is wonderful. The naan bread is wonderfully light and flavorful, the chutneys and tamerand sauce served with pakoras are a must. The chicken vindaloo, Tikkas and butter chicken are all beautifully done, with perfectly tender pieces of meat and great flavors. My favorite is the tandoori chicken with extra mint chutney. I love this place, though not as much as my sister who's ordered every single entree on the menu and loves it all. Enjoy
The decor is not to my style, but the restaurant is clean and the service is generally pretty good, though not terribly professional. The dinner specials are good value because the portions are quite large for this price, usually including naan, black pepper papadaam, rice, entree, and chutneys. Be sure to order the naan, which is excellent. Chicken or lamb curry, saag paneer, and butter chicken are delicious and can be ordered to taste for heat. I haven't found shahi paneer that I like better anywhere in Vancouver. Of the 5 Indian restaurants within 4 blocks, this is the best.
...Butter Chicken. The best butter chicken I've ever had in North America. Period. Though the ambiance is uninspired, the food in consistently good, especially the garlic naan, and fresh, home-made cheese. Don't skimp on the green chutney - it's minty and spiked with green chiles - truly delicious.
I've eaten at a bunch of Indian places but always find myself coming back here. I have no idea if the food here is authentic but I've enjoyed more than most of the Indian places I've tried on Main and Fraser. Usually order for takeout now, the restaurant tends be dead even on weekend evenings so it's not a particularly fun place to eat. As the other reviews mentioned the decor is nothing to write home about. I particulary enjoy the Sag Paneer.
Dining in there is a typical low-budget Indian restaurant ambiance but the food is excellent. Try the mixed vegetable korma or the butter chicken with regular naan or the pakoras.
Same family/owners as Taste of India on Robson, but these folks deliver.
One word to describe it all will be Poor. The decor was tacky, the food was pretty bad and when we commented on a dish being really bad to the waitress, we got a reply saying it is not her fault they make what they make! We had to insist to get it replaced.
