A small restaurant on Main street with a quasi-gothic twist.
I was waiting until I could find a review for this place before trying it out, and finally a few days ago google spit out a new review on another website, The response to this new main street eatery seemed over all good so I figured, hey why not! I was forewarned about the price point being way off to the quality of the good, and Yes, the food is ridiculously over priced for what you get. That being said, the food IS tasty, but it's not tasty enough to make me want to go back for seconds at the same price.
The decor is...interesting. I don't really quite know what to make of it, it's certainly not something that fits into the neighborhood. Very much like stepping out of main street and into a vortex that spits you back out in a clothing shop in Yaletown or Kerrisdale. It's funky, but it's doesn't feel right for the neighborhood. There is a definite gothic twist to the place, but it feels very forced.
The service was good, but my only complaint would be the chef coming out to discuss every aspect of the meal with me. I came to eat, not to be lectured on why the food is amazing for the entire duration of my meal.
I'm glad that I checked it out, but I will not be going back. There are so many other great spots on main street that I've fallen in love with, that also have the camp value of a theme, the reef being one of my favorites. The difference is that the theme and decor of places like The Reef, The Main, The Foundation, or really any other restaurant on this street, is in sync with the menu and service. Hyde just feels like an abstract mess.
Have been to Hyde a couple times now and the service, food, and atmosphere all far exceed what I would expect from a pub. Servers and bartenders were friendly. Food was fresh. Atmosphere is unique and even the bathrooms have had some major thought put into them as far as decor.
The best I've had on the menu is the Salt Spring Island mussels. Not many pubs in the city can you get fresh mussels and the prices are really reasonable.
I will go back.
Firstly I just want to say that I'm not a food snob but I am a huge fan of food/wine/dining/service. I have never actually written a review on this site, but after reading the last review here I actually signed up for this site so I could give my two bits about this place.
I have dined at HYDE twice in the last couple months and have to say I've thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of this new restaurant.
AMBIANCE: The decor and vibe inside is based on Alice In Wonderland and falling down the rabbit hole - it's funky and fun in the way it suggests a Mad Hatter's tea party-type theme without being too cheezy or over the top. You feel like you are somewhere when you are inside and it DEFINITELY works for Main Street's indie/local/hipster/boutique scene cause it's not the norm like everything else on Main.
SERVICE: The staff are friendly and accommodating - their table graces were timely, relaxed, and helpful. The chef did not come over for me like he did for the last reviewer, but I love hearing about my food from the chef if I am lucky enough to talk to him, and think that it would have only added to the experience of going out for a meal.
FOOD: The food was awesome. I got the mussels both times because they were so good the first time. A great portion, delicious white wine broth, and it comes with yummy thin cut french fries to soak it all up - I highly recommend.
Value: I feel that I got exactly what I paid for, and I wish that most things could be that solid in life. I would rather spend slightly more and have a great experience than spend slightly less and really notice the difference.
HYDE is a sure bet for me in the future and it's one of my top choices for dining on Main Street.
I hope you find this review helpful!
I recently went to Hyde for a friends birthday. I had frequented Zigz in the past and was curious to see what had been done to the old local. I was pleasently suprised, the food was fantastic and the service was good. What I was most impressed with was the cocktail list. I am not usually one for trying new things but I convinced to try a drink with egg in it. I actually liked it so much that I ordered 2 more.
By the end of the night everyone from table to table was drinking together and and it turned into a very fun evening.
I would definatly go back but I would make a reservation as It is very small and they have limited seating.
I would also like to see desert in the menu as I tend to like sweets after dinner.
