Hoshi Sushi is a small Japanese restaurant located on West Broadway in Kits. Eat in, take out, free delivery.
First and last time here. Stay away from the sunomono salad (No flavour just watery).the gyozas areally soggy and 'off' tasting. Rolls were alright, probably the best thing we'd ordered... until we found a long black hair in the MIDDLE of one. When we said we'd like to send it back they took it and said Sorry, yet didn't bring a new one or offer anything else. (Nobody at my table had long dark hair by the way, and it had been rolled into the roll. ).
When we received our bill we were shocked to see we were charged for it even though we had only eaten 2 pieces. The server argued with us and refused to take it off saying it wasn't their hair. I work in a restaurant, this is not customer service and it was so offensive. Such a simple thing. None of the chefs were wearing hair nets anyway, the place wasn't that clean, and the atmosphere was quite and very very hot.
If you can avoid this place, please do so.
The only good thing I have to say about it is the deals, how you can pick and choose 3 items off a large menu for $10.25.
There are quite a few sushi places in the area but my boyfriend and his roommates have been ordering delivery from here for years, and so I've also been ordering here for years but not really knowing which sushi place it was since they always did the ordering. The delivery is fast.
Today I went for dine-in (and recalled I'd dined in there at least once before) and it was tasty as usual. I had the $13.99 miso soup and 3 item combo. I chose toro nigiri, chopped scallop roll and chopped scallop nigiri. I was hungry when I got there but it was filling enough that I could only eat half. So it basically made for two meals.
The seafood is very fresh and tender, and the rolls are well made and don't fall apart. I have never found the rice too mushy or vinagery as another reviewer commented.
Service is brisk and food is made fast, though there isn't much service after that - no tea refills and go up to the counter to pay and ask for take-home container. And you need to take initiative and just seat yourself when you come in. But cheerful service when you ask for it.
I've had too many things from here to count.. dynamite roll, gomae, tempura, wakame, etc.. all good. Wish I got more toro nigiri today though.. sooooo good.
I have been to many sushi restaurants but nothing compares to this one. It is my favorite restaurant and has been for a few years now. The quality of the sushi is amazing because it is always done perfectly and fresh. when you pick up a roll you do not have to worry about it falling apart because it is perfectly rolled. Their other foods like the hot plates and teriyaki chicken great too. All of the Employees there are nice and they know me and my family now. The service is incredibly fast and they always get my food to the table in under 10 minutes and sometimes under 5 minutes. the value of the food is great as well. it costs about 24$ to buy a 42 piece party tray of sushi and an average of $8:50 for any hot plate. I would suggest this restaurant to anyone.
We've eaten here a number of times, and find that after eating at Hoshi Sushi we always feel content. Their sushi is well-presented and fresh, and we've never been disappointed. And bonus marks to them for having "Kids' Combos" on the menu. It's in a great location, too - right smack in the busy shopping area of West Broadway (well, parking kind of sucks).
The menu is pretty extensive, and there are deals to be had! There is a "Three Item" menu, on which three items can be had for $8.99 (and miso soup is included). My son opted for a yam tempura roll, chicken teriyaki, and agadashi tofu. I went for the 3-item dinner special menu ($11.99 - also includes miso soup). I had an Alaska roll, Dynamite roll, and an order of chicken karaage. I was hungry when I walked in that night, but couldn't finish everything! My husband had salmon teriyaki, which was presented nicely, all sizzling in a cast iron dish with veggies, plus he had an order of tomago.
It isn't a large place, and the people there are very friendly. I want to return and try a few of their other dishes - I was eyeing the picture of Tempura Bananas that was hanging on the wall. Mmmmm.....
My girlfriend and I have ordered from this place a few times, and we've never been disappointed. While the price is what can be expected from a sushi place, we were really pleased with the fast delivery, and delicious food. We have ordered many items from here, but the yams - while we expected it to be soggy because of the fact that it was delivery, was very good and crunchy. The sushi tasted fresh, and the portions of these and their bento boxes were great.
I stopped in here for a quick take-out lunch earlier this week and was disappointed in the quality of the sushi I ordered. This used to be one of my go-to neighbourhood sushi places but after this last experience I'll likely be heading back to Kitstaya or Tokyo One instead. I ordered a veggie roll combo which included a veggie roll and my choice of 2 small maki. The rice was SO soggy and vinegary that the rolls were barely edible. My cucumber roll had hardly any cucumber at all, just tiny tiny slivers of it. The vegetable roll had big quartered chunks of carrot that were extremely cold in contrast to the warm rice. They also seemed an unusual choice of vegetable when compared to other veggie rolls I've had from other sushi restaurants. I used to come here often just for the rolls. I've never ordered in as I don't particularly care for the ambiance of the place but the food I took away has always been pretty decent. I don't know if they were just having an off day or what the problem was but I think it will be awhile before I set foot in there again!
its more expensive nigiri than most places; but the value is there. Melt-in-your-mouth value. that, a california roll and an order of salmon sashimi and you'll be set till dinner.
there are booths, but the style remains the same feeling no matter where you sit. whatever temperature it is outside is basically what it is inside. the front door opens a lot.
prompt service, like most sushi places. parking is a bit hard to get, paid on broadway and a lot of permit only on 8th, etc.
