  • A Mount Pleasant neighborhood favorite. Veteran Chinese BBQ butchers and wonton noodle makers a mainstay here at this humble eatery. Eager waitress staff. (The ratings refer to the repalcement restaurant, New Maple Wanton House.) Ho Tak Kee was a good, affordable, dependable Chinese reataurant, but it's GONE. What a shame. I think that when new owners take over a restaurant, the first thing they should do is to analyze what made the place so popular. Now you could shoot a cannon in the place without hitting anyone.

Ho Tak Kee is Ho Down Hill

I was here with a couple other diners last friday. Its been like at least 2-3 years since I've visited this place. One of the memorable visits was when I was about 10 years old (over a decade ago), when I became a victim of food poisoning here. I have nothing to prove it, nor am I food scientist, but its one of those things that you just KNOW... so I am not going to go into details nor do I want to get my ass sued by Mr. Ho Tak Kee. Anyhow, in my last visit, I was thoroughly shocked at the poor quality of the rice and noodle dishes.

1) My Yeong Chow fried rice, which normally consists of green peas, green onion, shrimp, egg, and bbq pork, had NO green in it whatsoever. I mean, c'mon man, green onion and green peas is INTEGRAL to yeong chow fried rice. Its like having a cheeseburger without the cheese!!!

2) House Special Chow Mein. A Major dissappointment. Looked like a pile of meat scraps with some squid and bok choy, slathered with corn starch based oyster sauce - it should be appropriately titled "Friday Night Left Overs Chow Mein".

Yet, this place is quite busy with locals coming for dine in and pick up. Thumbs down for the chef and whoever hired him. Why did I return in spite of the food poisoning of many years ago? I think I was on crack.

Where Chinese People Go . . .

Although it's changed names in English, it's still the same people and the same food for a good deal. It's traditional-at-home-Chinese food and we've been going for years. The curry beef brisket is the best in the city and my little one loves the fish and greens!

As a long time customer (more than 20 years) I have relished the simple, yet elegant cuisine of this restaurant. The owners lovingly prepare noodles, soup and authentic dishes. The BBQ pork is worth travelling over 1000 km to get (i know i did) and the simple fare dished up in occasionally updated cafe style restaurant is a real treat for my whole family.
