The Helm is a new lounge and supper club in Downtown Vancouver
The helm is trying to sell themselves as a fancy restaurant and a nightclub at the same time. Not like pub by day and club by night, but at the same time.
It doesn't work.
When I went to their website, which has since changed to add more friendly women in party mode and a soundtrack to fit, it was sleek looking with chandeliers.
Our server was good, but only because since she was training on the job I disarmed her nervousness and turned the conversation to a personal tone.
She couldn't tell me anything about the wine list (understandable). I asked for a taste of one that sells by the glass. I didn't quite like it, and asked for a taste of another that goes by the glass. She came back to me telling me the bartender was 'uncomfortable' opening up "another" bottle... I was surprised. Still am, but maybe that's just me?
Its not a big menu, and two of the items we wanted were unavailable.
Our dishes were interesting, but not great for the price.
It was also hard to have a nice dinner when the music blasting was clubbing shit. One song which lasted for a few minutes, the beat was created by the sound of a woman was being fucked.
There's two rooms at the Helm. the back room is the dining room "area", which seems to also support a VIP area. Lets just say its awkwardly designed....especially when the people who look like their on their first stop of the night come through the 'nice dining' area wearing clothing you'd expect to see at the roxy.
