Dining, cocktailing and music in a setting that presents the best qualities of restaurant, Hell's Kitchen is a lounge & bar in the thriving community of Kitsilano.
Hit up Hell's Kitchen in Kits last night for a quick beer and some eats. Gotta say the new owners have done a wicked job of reviving this long standing Kits staple! Looks like they have reno's the bathrooms and added some new TV's. Great selection of local beers on top as well as some interesting selections in the bottle including some beers from Oregon! Rogue and Deschutes breweries, two of my favs! The room had a great feel, dark and warm which is awesome for a city like ours that is grey and damp 9 months of the year. Ordered the Bensonhurst Pretzel to start off with and was pretty surprised by the cheese dipping sauce it came with. Bartender (Tim) explained that they make everything in house and that the sauce was called a Welsh rarebit, which is made up of a sharp aged white cheddar and an Irish Ale. Pretty cool! Next up, was the Soprano pizza, which I was told was one of their top sellers! AWESOME!! Classic New York style thin crust. Came out piping hot and crispy. 3 beer down, and a full belly = $40, works for me! All in all a great few hours and will definitely be back to try some more.
Used the coupon in the entertainment guide to drop in on a Saturday afternoon after the beach. Sat in modern armchairs facing TVs, nice and comfortably. Has been remodeled since I was here last, although entrance is weird, I like the levels and changes overall are much better. Food has also dramatically improved from a place I would never go again to a place I would come back.
What a surprise to find Tantalus Riesling on the wine list! I was delighted that someone had taste enough to showcase one of BC's finest!
T ordered a Caesar, nothing special. We got the steak entree and Siamese Dream pizza. The steak was a good baseball cut, but it came a little bloody rare instead of medium. I was appalled at the 4 bean pods that was suppose to be a veggie side, but T liked the micro-cob of corn and big home-made macaroni dish on the side. He said these were all his Dad's favourites, and it felt like home--which probably trumps my carb-counting.
The Siamese Dream is the best thin crust pizza I've ever had. Soft but crispy, awesome peanut drizzle, roast peppers and chicken. It was so savoury, I could have eaten the whole 18", but I was satiated at half and happily relived the memories for breakfast the next day. Microwaving was fine, not soggy. Probably would have preferred bias-sliced chix instead of cube, but that's a personal preference.
Perfect end to a day at the beach.
The seating is uncomfortable. The service is horribly slow. The food is tasty but over priced for what it is. There was too much fat on my pork tenderloin. The tasty chowder was served way too hot and the sheperd's pie was tasty but also way too steaming hot. I would have liked a cocktail but I was unwilling to spend $8 for one. I'll give them points for the Oceanwise and gluten free marks on the menu. They divide the seating in half with a pull down garage door after a certain time and don't let anyone sit in the mystery half. This makes the walkway so narrow that the waitresses are practically bumping into tables to get through. Tables are too close together it looks like an old bar or nightclub, they should remodel. They should diversify the menu more. If you don't feel like pizza, pasta, or a burger you have very few choices.
Walked in on a Friday evening, There were only 2 other desks with customers at that time, but nonethless we waited about 5 minutes til we were seated.
The food was alright, steak was a little overdone. Hell's Chowder was awesome, but Hell's Salad was not so awesome. Chicken wings are average compared to other possible options. However, it takes forever every time we are looking for a waitress.
Just like other normal restaurant with bars, you can taste beer in your iced tea.
It was okay in terms of the experience, but I'm not sure if I will come back next time.
