Han Gu is located beside TD Bank with parking on Kingsway, Wessex or Harold St. No need to try the back, there is no parking space.
Went here for lunch with my three year old daughter. It is a tight fit, I agree with a reviewer below that suggests that there is one too many tables in this place. Also, I found the music playing a bit annoying - but I am middle aged and probably know nothing about today's music anyway. The washrooms were tiny, but clean. The paper towel had run out of the ladies room. I told a staff member, they didn't look like they were in a rush to put some more in.
The waitress was cheery enough and I appreciated here helping me with the door as I juggled opening the front door and navigating a stroller. I am unsure why she immediately stated, "For one?" I know my daughter is only three and in a stroller - but she is a customer too ... I answered, "Two, for myself and my daughter." The other thing I noted was that we were not offered any tea. Every other customer who came in for a sit down, order meal got a compliment glass of hot tea. Even people waiting for take out orders were given a glass of tea. Why not us??
We ordered a bbq pork on rice, a deep fried squid rings appetizer, a mango slush and I had a almond milk tea (I still don't entirely "get" bubble tea - but my daughter likes slushes).
THe slush was tasty. My milk tea was overpowering in the almond flavour. Our food was only okay. Their was not a lot of pork on our rice dish, it was okay tasting though. I thought the cabbage was a bit haphazardly cut and could have been cooked more and had more seasoning. The tofu was flavourful, but mushy. It would have been better with just a small amount of Kimchi to liven it up.
The squid was okay, perhaps a little overdone. I was not crazy about the dipping sauce - it was a sweeet mayonnaise. I would have preferred spring roll sauce or even just some lemon to squeeze on the squid rings.
The meal was not expensive. It came to less than twenty bucks (with two drinks and basically two dishes).
Notwithstaning the okay value - it was still only okay food. I will probably be more likely to visit other only okay restaurants in this area before coming back here.
PS - It's a cash only establishment.
I've been to Han Gu twice already and both times I was impressed by the taste of the BBQ Pork. I'm a big fan of meat, so they scored really high with my taste buds.
Food - Both times I went I ordered the same thing, BBQ Pork on Rice. It came with pickled Veggies (i think), some kind of melon, spicy tofu, BBQ pork, and Rice. The First time i was there, I couldn't get enough of the pork, and I regretted sharing some with my girlfriend. The second time I thought it was a little saltier, but still very good.
Service - I went both times at non-peak hours so service was good. Problem was the second time, the server spoke mandarin (or maybe it was Korean) and we had a little bit of trouble communicating. It wasn't a big deal and we got what we needed (take out container).
Value - The first time I was there they gave me a large portion of everything. I was a little disappointed the second time. My meat portion seemed like it was 75% of what I got the first time. Needless to say, I shared very little this time.
Ambiance - Not much to say really. I liked how the place was bright, and the colours was good too. It was a little cramped, I think one too many tables.
We decided to check this place out last week because it's less than 10 minutes away from our home. The room looks spartan, with benches along each wall and tables along those benches. There's a big empty area in between, which makes the room look even sparser. Then again, you don't come to this small restaurant for the ambiance - you come for the food.
I thought my Korean kimchi hot pot was quite tasty and very filling - I had leftovers. The hotpots are great on a rainy day. Hubby's beef meal set was just OK in my mind, but he liked it. I also enjoyed the seaweed appy we ordered. At $6, the hotpot is a great value. The meal set was also around that price - also a great value.
Service was solid for an Asian restaurant.
All in all, this is a place we will go back to when I have a craving for a Korean-style hotpot when the pocketbook is light.
Their tofu hot pot is far worse than that of Han Ju tofu hot pot in Burnaby, which has been around for a while. I suppose they are still in the process of making trial-and-error attempts. Service was good when I was there, considering the waitresses didn't have to deal with lots of customers and could hence focus on serving one or two customers at a time. I'll give it another try in a few months and see if they improve. I'll report back.
