We were here for dinner on Sunday night.
The restaurant was very quiet. There was only one other table occupied while we were there. The restaurant seems to be very dark even at 5:30 on a bright sunny day.
Our server was very attentive and checked after each course to see that we were okay. We had the chicken wings and they were very good, Pork satay came with green papaya salad and red rice. We did not care for the green papaya salad. We mentioned it to our server and he was going to tell the kitchen but we told him not to bother as we felt it was just a matter of personal preference. The curried halibut also came with red rice and it was very tasty. The flatbread was delicious. With a 1/2 litre of wine and before tip dinner was $80.00
It was a good meal and we would definitely return.
My overall experience of this restaurant would have been rated a lot better if I had not been served by the the rudest and worst waitress I've ever encountered. I would return to this restaurant 100% if i had not been served by this waitress as I did enjoy the menu choices and the food was quite good.
To start off the night, the waitress tried to tell my group of friends and me that there was a drink special on the menu but stated to us that we "probably don't drink beer." Not the conventional way of trying to promote a special, and a pretty humorous for her to assume what we prefer and what we don't, but no biggie. The four of us decided to choose four items on the menu to split as a start. When the food was served, the waitress only brought out three dishes. We assumed the last one, a tuna salad, was on its way and decided to just hold off asking the waitress for it. When it had not arrived after an hour, I inquired with the waitress if our last item would be coming out soon. We ordered FOUR ITEMS to start to split between to FOUR of us... a mistake we would not have made. The waitress responded by telling me that we had not placed an order for the tuna salad.. in fact her words were: "there was no tuna salad, you didn't order one." To her, clearly this was OUR mistake. Despite how she dismissed the fact that we had placed an order for four dishes and insinuated the fact that she was not at fault at all, I kindly asked her if we could place an order for the tuna salad. About 45min later, after we had finished the three dishes, we were still waiting for our dish. We then inquired with the waitress to have the last dish canceled simply because we did not want to wait any longer than we already had and really we had lost our appetite. The waitress then stated that the tuna salad was ready and we could not cancel this order. When asked why it had not been served to our table if it had been ready, she simply repeated herself and said it had been made and it was on its way out. Note that we were seated right next to the kitchen... not a far walk for the salad to be served to us. The topper to our night was when the waitress then began to start removing our dishes right in front of us without asking first if we were finished. Amidst her clearing our dishes in a hurry, she dropping a knife onto one of my friend's dress which then fell on the floor. The waitress immediately asked if we could move aside so she "could just get that from under the table" because evidently the knife had to be picked up right away and her dropping the knife onto a customer was not rude at all. When we asked my friend if her dress was ok, the waitress then stated to my friend that "it should be fine." Funny how there was no apology made and she felt it was necessary to reassure my friend that her dress should be fine. From the beginning of the night to the end, this waitress was rude, dismissive, and completely out of line and not to mention she lacked common courtesy. We weren't looking for a grand apology, but just a simple I'm sorry of sincerity would have sufficed.
No matter how good a restaurant, how delicious the food, how attractive the ambiance... appalling service like what I had encountered ruins the dining experience completely and puts off a customer from ever return again. I can say for certain that I won't be returning and I hope that this waitress looks for a different job if she hates serving so much.
First time back here since the renovation. It was busy but we did get a table right away. I was in the mood for comfort food so ordered the grilled cheese- big smile, it was great. Lots of cheese plus some extras that made all the difference. You have to try it. The salads were also a hit. Our server was exactly right! Fun, attentive and not intrusive.
Will definitely be back here. I am not telling you what the extra is in the grilled cheese-be surprised.
I came here after driving by regularly. My girlfriend and I are always looking for more tapas restaurants to try and figured with the hustle and bustle from the outside looking in it was worth a shot. I've also learnt that a busy place is deceiving, especially if it's on Main St. :)
Cascade Room next door (same owners) is always busy so we ventured next door to Habit. Same story. Busy busy busy. The small entrance is crowded as I weeded my way through to a server only to find out the wait time is approximately 30 minutes. No problem we'll wait. We were eventually seated after about 15 minutes.
A quick glance across the room and you'll see all kinds of personalities, young and old. It is LOUD. Probably the loudest sit down restaurant I've been to. I had to keep my ears open and voice loud to catch any conversation with the girlfriend.
The servers here are casually dressed; if they didn't venture back and forth from the kitchen you'd swear they were a customer. Our server introduced herself and gave us a run down on drinks and dishes she recommended. Very friendly with a smile. We ordered the Homous, Malasa Spiced Mashed Potatoes, Crispy Tofu, Red Coconut Curry and Grilled Lamb Satay. Dishes were presented in simple large white plates; a little deceiving making the portions look small.
The Homous was different, I believe made with white beans. The accompanying house breads were fresh with a crusty exterior. The tofu was made "Agadeshi" style with a hoisin sauce and paired with spinach and mushrooms. Fairly simple ingredients but tasty together. A bit steep on the price at $9 for the dish. The other dishes didn't jump out at me but was good nonetheless.
The dishes are prepared in a very simple manner with a overall clean taste. All our dishes weren't heavy and quite possibly can be seen by others as a little bland; I think it caters more for the local area folks who seem to like the healthier, clean palette tasting choices.
Overall a decent place nestled in the trendy area of Main St. but I can't say when I'll be back there again.
I really wanted to love the place as I stepped in & got seated at a nice comfy booth. Love the retro-contemporary decor. The wall design is neat, curving out the way it does like petals all throughout--quite symmetrical at that. I was hoping the food would amaze me so that this can fast become a regular hang out as they sported nice late hours.
The Spanish mussels came dry & crumbly, almost without sauce which was just millimetres thick coating the bottom of the plate. None of the freshy delicate juiciness evident in the meat. It is, however, a decent portion for $13. The sticks of bread that comes with it tastes like burnt pieces of crumply cardboard--amazingly bland & lacking in any breadlike features. That was a first for us. The turkey stew's just like eating a chicken pot pie except with turkey dark meat. The "white flour biscuit" though buttery is not nearly as good as what anyone can whip up from the Bisquick biscuit recipe...
The apple crisp dessert topped with whipped cream was basically cooked apples with granola poured on top then whipped cream thrown on top of that. Uninspired & boring to eat.
Lemon cardamom creme brulee had a nice burnt crisp top but was otherwise very mediocre. The 2 soft cookies it came with are like soft oatmeal cookies which are just lightly flavoured with a good texture. Not sure how that is supposed to pair with the creme brulee, but it was good having it with my coffee & tea.
Service was just adequate. The female server (owner? since there were really only 2 servers, 1 male, 1 female) reminds me of the servers over at The Foundation--she gave the feeling that she was once upon a time a young hippy gal but now is doing well enough for herself that she can work in the hospitality business quite dispassionately.
Overall, a thoroughly disappointing experience. We will not be back.
A girlfriend and I decided to give this place a try last Friday. We arrived at around 8pm and were seated almost immediately. The room has a definite 'New York' feel to it. I love the mirrored walls, so even if you have your back to everybody, you can still see everthing.
We shared 3 tapas (perogies, beef skewers and pacific halibut), and ended the evening with the lemon cardamom cremè brulèe. All in all, the food was quite good!
The service wasn't that great though. Granted, it was busy... I felt like she was trying to rush us. At no point was there a warm and fuzzy feeling from the waitress. I don't even think she spoke 5 words to us as a matter of fact.
I went to the newly renovated Habit last week for a friend's birthday with a group of 7.
The new decor is fantastic, cozy, comfortable, lots to look at, a great improvement.
Our server was attentive, helpful and totally unobtrusive.
Drinks: The bento box mix your own gin drink was delicious and fun. Wine was tasty and well priced, great whiskey menu.
Food: Solid is my vote, other people at the tabe had meals that looked amazing.
The perogies (welcome back!) were delicious but a bit under-seasoned, needed salt. The Salt cod cakes - I wished they were crisper, the pancake underneath them was amazing.
The white bean, smoked onion hummous was delicious.
The salmon dish was perfect.
All in all I'm looking forward to going back but I miss the tofu dish.
My husband and I went to Habit for brunch this weekend. There was a line up but we were seated quite quickly. . The room looked good. The restaurant was very busy and loud. The server greeted us and took our drink order. We waited.and waited. I wondered why they only had three servers on and no bartender. Our drinks arrived and we ordered our meal. We waited and waited and waited. I looked around and noticed other tables also waiting far too long.
The servers were dressed in beige colors. They looked sloppy. Our server was nice but her blouse was unbuttoned and she looked dischelveled.
Our food arrived and it was tempid at best. The potatoes were not homemade - they kind of tasted packaged. My eggs were supposed to have prawns in it but I only saw maybe a half a prawn. There was alot of avacado. I can't even say the food was mediocre. It was nothing but a big disappointment.
I took awhile to get our bill and then it took another while to get the little machine to process the visa.
Sunday brunch should be relaxing and non rushed but this was painfully slow.
Why the management doesn't put another server on or a busperson or a bartender is beyond me. I didn't look at the kitchen but since the service was so slow I assume they need help back there also.
In sum, the service was painfully slow and the food was not good. Give me a reason to go back because I can't find one.
First, I think they don't seat people to create a queue outside. I mean there were empty tables available inside when we got in. Second, the tapas was not flavourful. I could have cooked them myself it looked like they were so simple. Third, and most important, there was no eye candy here. Sure I was with my gif and wouldnt do anything but between the staff and customers there wasnt one low cut or short skirt. When I go out to eat I like to eat and have fun. If I just want to eat there is a deli 5 min.s walk from my work and I already go there for lunch sometimes.
Maybe it's what we ordered.
Maybe it was the night we went, I dunno.
We didn't enjoy the food (well, the bread and olives WERE excellent, but ok... bread... and it's not like they grow the olives.) The service was good, but there were some silly errors.
We left all saying, "we won't be back."
Went to dine a few Sundays ago.
Service was excellent. The waiter was courteous and attentative.
Food was great as well. Unique dishes... not sure how to classify them. The portions are kinda small, but are quite surprisingly filling. Menu is not that large, but all the stuff I had was great.
Atmosphere and ambiance is very relaxing. Seems like more of a couples or dating place.
Overall great experience. Will go back again to try the other stuff.
I love Habit. The abiance is great: art deco, retro booth's fit perfectly for the neighbourhood.
A friend and I went there a couple weeks back and had three dishes:
Beet salad: visually pleasing and delicious.
Meze platter: my favourite dish of the meal. Three dips, the one that stood out being the red pepper homous.. atleast that's what I remember it being. It also had two chicken satay skewers done with a spicy marinade. Very tender and perfectly spicy to complement the dips.
Duck Ragu on Polenta: For me, the worst of the three. There was nothing wrong with it, but I thought it was lacking flavour. It was quite bland. The polenta was done perfectly though, as was the texture of the duck.
I do like this restaurant a lot, and will be back.
We were happy when Habit re-opened but were a bit dismayed when we saw the changes in the menu. We miss the tofu, but were happy that the perogies were still on the menu. We had the perogies and then ordered the lamb meatloaf and the steak and potatoes and all were fantastic. Dessert was also really good - we shared the pineapple upsidedown cake and the brownie (for old times sake) and, again, both were great.
As for the decor - we love it. Very different from the old design, but it's very cozy and comfortable.
These other "reviews" are fairly vague and confusing. I wish I knew what they had eaten...I thought our reviews were supposed to justify our ratings...
All I can say is try it yourself...I'll be back again and again....
We had dinner at Habit tonight and the food was very nice. We stop there "by hazard" and we where looking for a place to have quick/tasty fix. It was more than that, the decor is very 1970, can of cool. It was snot very bust, good service and great food.
We took the mussels in yellow curry, the mussel where locals, full and very big. Great flavours, the sauce was delicious and we eat it all.
We also had the red curry noodle with tofu, it was very tasty. Portions are big and price small, each course was $13.00!
Great plus for me, I usually do not finish my beer where I order one, but they have a small size 10 oz for 3.00! Perfect! Thus you can also drink, eat and drive.
I will definitely go back, and I have already place it on my favorite eateries, especially they serve until quite late, up to 1 am on weekends and eleven or midnight other nights.
I have been to Habit a few times and plan to go back again and again.
Every time I go the service is always great and the food is always amazing.
The servers are very knowledgeable and quite witty at times.
definitely well worth the price.
Looked for a place to eat at on a Monday but all the restaurants on Main seemed to be closed. So walked in to this place. Place was actually quite good. Simple food done well. The lasagna and perogies were the highlights. But I've heard the menu hasn't changed for quite a while? who knows, but enjoying the experience.
Came here a while ago...and the thing i really enjoyed were the sweet carrot & brie perogies with caramelized onions...portions were small, but these were incredible! Mmm...I think that's all they've got to keep me coming back...I think you'd be better off going next door (sibling restaurant, I believe) to the Cascade Room...better ambience, if that's what you're looking for!
My gf and I checked out the menu of Habit online and the prices seemed decent, so we put the venue to the test. The good news is that we didn't have to wait to be seated. The bad news is the portions were tiny and we both left the restaurant hungry whereas if we had paid the same amount of money at any number of other restaurants within 2 blocks we would have been stuffed. Too bad because the food, while good, was not outstanding.
After trying to get into two restaurants in Vancouver and discovering that both had more than an hour line up we stumbled across this place on Main. At first I wasn't sure about whether we should go in or not, because the menu was so small, however it was getting late and we were Hungry and there was space, so we went in. And to our surprise, we had a wonderful experience. The waitress was super friendly, informative and quick to answer our questions as well as provide information about the concept of the restaurant. The food was great. We ordered the brie and carrot perogies, the vegetable curry and the stuffed portabello mushroom. All were excellent, good quality, very flavorful and unique. The only suggestion I have is to have a bigger drink menu where one could order a martini. Otherwise, a great restaurant and great service. I would definitely go back
One of the happening places found on the ever-growing Main Street is the Habit Lounge. It is considered a neighborhood restaurant and when you go in, you’ll see why as it is away from the usual downtown vicinity.
It has a funky retro décor with modern details and low lighting, which adds to the romantic ambience perfect for dates or intimate gatherings. When you come in, the first thing you will notice right in front of you is a head of a deer with huge antlers in which the image is repeated through out the lounge. Because the lounge is in a ‘L’ shape, be sure to sit where you can bee seen to ensure prompt service as it can be a challenge to get service.
Habit Lounge offers a good selection of dishes for both the meat and vegetarians and of course plates for sharing as well. We tried the Pacific halibut (braised in green peppercorn coconut curry sauce), stuffed portabello mushroom (with walnut pesto, golden beet and chevre), roasted mushroom and goat cheese lasagna (with pesto and arugula) and the duck ragu (with olives on herb polenta). Everyone in the group enjoyed their meals and found their dishes very tasty.
We ended out meals with a chocolate walnut brownie (loaded with a huge scoop of mocha ice cream) and creamy lemon cardamon crème brulee (with pistachio nut cookies) complements well with a fruity or black tea. The chocolate walnut brownie was dry but the ice cream helped make it delectable.
Would go again to try the other dishes to see what they are like.
