Gotham Steakhouse is a high-end American steakhouse serving the finest Canadian Prime beef.
This was my fourth visit to the restaurant. Food quality and service has certainly deteriorated. We ordered two lobster bisque to start. It was bitter. Waitress took them away and brought us clam chowder. It tasted like starchy water with little flavour. Waitress offered to take mine away. My friend reluctantly finished it after adding a lot of salt to it. Waitress did not even try to offer me an appetizer or something. Steak was fine but it used to melt in my mouth. Crab cake was excellent. I ordered a sundae which was made by local gelato place, as we were told, not in house. It tasted like any commercial gelato and was average. They added many "hard "smarties, which were not described in the menu. It's really tacky. Our bill included a charge for 1 clam chowder. The least they could do was to charge nothing for the soup. I emailed them about our dissatisfaction but received no reply. Obviously, excellent customer experience is not important to them. I will definitely not return for another meal. Value is poor given the lower than average service, high cost of meal and overall medium food quality.
I've been here a number of times now, as my work is just around the block, and I love good steak. I am here to tell you that this is the best filet mignon you will ever taste.
First, the cut is perfectly selected - there is never any crap on the steak. It's just tender and juicy, and it is of a nice size/height. Second, they season it better than I have EVER tasted anywhere else. It is perfectly salty and flavorful. Third, they cook it to perfection. Somehow the meat is crispy on the outside and cooked exactly to your liking on the inside. Absolutely outstanding.
To add to the experience, they bring out the most amazing onion loaf before your meal comes. It is super fresh, and tastes delicious. I have also had the duck spring rolls to start. They are tender and flavorful, served with strawberries and drizzled in a tangy sauce that makes the whole dish.
I can't speak for any of their other steaks, but overall, you owe it to yourself to try their filet. Run, don't walk.
Went here for a birthday dinner with a party of 7 people. for the prices they charge, the food was mediocre at best. My Porterhouse was just okay and sampled my friend rib eye which wasnt seasoned properly. we actually laughed when we got the bill based on the quality of the food provided. I guess the joke was on us! Keg quality at triple the price.
Who decides to sit who and where? Good question! No consideration as to the clients' needs. Two of us (businessmen) were seated along the aisle and were told 'rest all reserved'. Of course it's not true because rest of other tables were still empty after 1.5 hours.
Quality of T Bone steak: Bad and not worth every bite.
Wine: Way way over-priced.
Overal: Once is enough and at least I can say I have been there.
Last and not least: Why certain people were allowed to smoke in the back of the restaurant?
gotham has the best steak in vancouver! must try!
we ordered porterhouse steak, filet mignon, england clam chowder, creme brulee, and salad. everything is great!! even their bread + butter.
dessert is just okay, i wouldn't order their dessert again.
however, i hoped they did something more special for the birthday boy! (no cake, no candles, no discount, nothing....)
Good food but not worth the price.
I've been here about four times (everytime as a client on someone else's bill). And I have to say that the food is good, not great, not excellent but very good - but everytime I look at the prices I shake my head that people will actually pay for it - It just don't think it is good enough for those prices.
The ambiance is a big hit, and over all you will have a good meal and a nice night out - but the bill will make you wish you went to the Keg.
Worth a try - but I won't be going on my own dime.
I went to Gotham with a girlfriend out of a mood. I had never heard of that steakhouse. The experience was so awesome that in the same month I went again. I just stayed at the bar. (it was cocktail time...) they have a great chois of cocktail. some evenings they have a man playing the piano. I had a lemon merengue pie and my friend had a cheese cake. It was juste delicious. Like a home-made cake.
For all of you who like to drink coctails and have a dessert juste perfect!!!
Gotham was always my favor steak house in my home town of Vancouver. I had my going away party there 5 years ago before I left for traveling abroad. Being out of Vancouver you actually realize that it has the best food and verities in the world. Everywhere I went I always told people about the food in Vancouver and especially Gothams, and how exceptional it was. Don’t get me wrong though, there are many great countries that have great tasting food of there ethnicity, except maybe Philippines, but then again in Vancouver I wasn’t really into that anyway. So after coming back and being overly anticipated for the food, I decided to have my home coming dinner at Gothams. I don’t know what it was....... Maybe just being away for a while, or having to much high expectations, the food was just not the same. Not sure if they changed there chiefs or what happened. I mean the food is still good, but not the same as I once remembered it. I was kind of disappointed. I would still say it is an alright place to eat, but now its not a place that I would be overly excited to eat at. I might go back to give it one more try.................
I've been to Gotham's twice. The first time was a disaster but let me frame it in the right context. This is the most expensive steak house I have eaten at in Canada and I rated it in accordance with their prices. The first time I ordered a steak rare. I was very specific with the waiter who seemed annoyed that I was exlpaining exactly how I wanted it which was caramelized and seared on the outside with the centre being a juicy red/pink. We had to wait twice for refills of drinks. When the steak arrived it was overcooked on the outside and raw in the center. The potatos and veggies were pretty good, properly cooked and tasty. The dessert was average. At the end of the meal I still had not finished my steak and the waiter asked how everything was. I told him it was pretty average and for the price a big disappointment. A look of shock crossed his face and it was almost like how dare you say that about Gotham's. Dont ask if you dont want an honest answer. Now that said they were very busy that night and perhaps I had bad luck.
The second time I want my steak was much better but I have had better at far lower prices in Vancouver. The service was much better this time and the waiter was excellent, never missed a step. IN summary Gotham's is more of a place to be seen than a place to have great food.Steak is easy to prepare and you should have it perfect. I recently ate at Del Friscos in Fort Worth, Texas as a walk in and the food was miles ahead of Gothams at about a 1/3 lower price. Gothams needs to up the food quality or lower the price, right now it is not acceptable.
I went on a date to Gotham at the beginning of this year (2009), and had one of the best dining experiences ever!! I judge a restaurant firstly by their bread. Gotham has delicious & fresh oven baked bread; comes to the table warm, is slightly toasted, crunchy on the outside and soft in the inside. You pretty much won't need to order appies because if you're a carb lover, I guarantee you'll finish the bread. My boyfriend and I ordered a calamari which was pretty good (nothing too exceptional and different than other restaurants though). The best part was the POTERHOUSE STEAK- this one you must order! We had it medium rare (how every steak in this world should be ordered and cooked) and it just melted in my mouth! I dine out at a lot and the only other place where I've had a delicious steak was in Las Vegas inside Bellagio- the prices there are obviously incomparable with the great $52.95 at Gotham. The Porterhouse Steak will definately feed two people. My boyfriend and I ordered two sides: creamy mashed potato and broccoli. We had food left over by the end of the meal (mainly steak) and trust me, we eat A LOT so really, paying $26 for the steak per person is a really good deal. The server was exceptionally friendly, and knowledgable. He recommended a wine that paired with our steak perfectly. I don't even like wine and managed to finish 2 glasses. If you're looking to find a comfortable, and relaxing place to enjoy a great meal I would highly recommend going to Gotham!
While Gotham's may be the place that all the "beautiful" people and gangsters hang out - give it a miss if you're searching for an EXCEPTIONAL steak. At an average of $40+ per steal ala carte - you would think that they were five-star however after ordering their rib eye - I was somewhat disappointed. Don't get me wrong - the beef was decent however they used way 2 much salt (as this was the only taste that stood out). The sides were just average.
IMHO, Hy's is still the premium steakhouse in Vancouver. Among the finest are Metropolitan Grill in Seattle, WA and Sullivan's in Palm Springs, CA
Would probably never go back since there is ust NOT enuff substance to warrant a return-visit
I' don't mind spending the extra $$ on a good meal and Gotham definitely has that down to a T if I'm going out for a GREAT steak.
Had the Tenderloin which was perfect and to my liking portions for the sides are huge and I'd only recommend two sides at the most if you'ave also done appetizers..
The meal was very rich and if you did this everyday you'd end up in the hospital with a heart attack but at the same time there's something about spending this kind of money and getting a 10 meal if you deserve it.
Ambiance was very high end and service was very approachable and friendly.
Is it worth the money?
Yes if you want your steak to be a sure thing but as you know tehre are many good restaurants out there and they may not be able to get the regulars to frequent more than once a month.
I come once a year as a treat and I'm satisfied with the experience and very pleased with the meal.
Our steak tartare was chopped so much that it basically had the texture of puree'd pate and the sides were cold. On the positive the 16oz. Bone in rib steak albiet a thinner cut had amazing flavour. Our server was on point and did not miss a beat however the busser poured tap water into our sparkling water. It probably deserves a second shot so we will try it again.
I must admit that this is one of the best steak houses in Vancouver. It is of course not meant for everyday dining but for that special occasion it is just fabulous. The food here is excellent. Basically you pick your steak (I had the poterhouse)and the sides are extra which decreases the value a bit but the steaks here are so tender and juicy. The service was incredible. The server described to me each steak on the menu and everything was followed up to the minute. Highly recommended.
I had dinner at Gotham Steakhouse about a year ago, and thought it was a pretty great meal. Went back this Saturday and I can't believe what a gangster and stripper magnet this place has become. The ambience quickly dampened the quaility of the food, since it became obvious as we looked around that this place was full of low class thugs and hookers. Disgusting! I could not get out of this place fast enough. I thought there was a "Barwatch" program? VPD, you might want to stroll through this place, you may find the losers you are looking for.
I went to Gotham last night with three of my friends after reading the excellent reviews below. We came pretty early, at 5.30 pm, before the dinner rush - the room started filling up within 30 minutes of our arrival. From the beginning, I was in awe over the decor; there was definitely a classic steakhouse ambiance, from the dim lighting to the wood panels to the plush, comfortable chairs. Our service was exceedingly helpful. Not once did we have to ask him to bring a glass of water, refill our bread baskets or provide descriptions of the food; he was knowledgeable, respectful, and showed a true love for steaks. The appetizers were pretty good. We had the ahi tuna, which was fantastic. Though sharing this platter between four people gave us three small pieces each, each piece was worth every dollar - they were succulent, flavorful, and cooked perfectly. I also had the ceasar's salad, which was equally excellent. The crisp lettuce and the garlic, combined with anchovies and parmesan cheese, made for a good mix. The steaks, on the other hand, were...well...good, but not spectacular. A friend and I had the porter house, cooked medium. My steak was slightly under seasoned and I was a bit annoyed that the other half of my steak was charred. Our two other dinner companions ordered the lobster, which I tried and which was probably better than my steak; the butter sauce really set off the lobster quite well. For desert, we had the creme brulee, which wasn't bad, though I would've liked it to be served warmer. All in all, it was a decent culinary experience; it wasn't a mind-blowing meal by any means but I wouldn't hesitate to bring back business colleagues or my family.
The best steak I have in Vancouver. Will definitely go back again for special occasions. For appetizer, I highly recommend the Oyster Rockefeller. For entree, you absolutely cannot miss porterhouse steak. Dessert is just so so... nothing too exciting. I found Gotham's price is much more reasonable than Morton's comparing the quality of food they serve.
As soon as you walk it, you're thinking BIG. Its a nice place, maybe a bit dark. That was my first impression.
The steaks were good...not outstanding, just good. Mine was a bit over-salted but cooked perfectly, medium rare. We ordered several side dishes to share...all were prepared well. In my opinion, the food is a little overpriced for what you get. The service was average...not necessarily in a bad way, just average.
I would recommend giving them a try at lease once. The food is decent & the decor is pretty cool!
This is nice family style comfort food. I ordered the porterhouse steak which at $49.99 was ridiculously thin , salty and tasty. The apargagus was done beautifully, the potatoes were mashed ( That's All I can say abouth them, and the corn was creamed :) I have eaten at the great steak house of New York and this does not come cloise. I had a similar steak at the keg ( theirs was thicker.) We were seated on the edge of the passage and were brushed by literally about four times by waiters and patrons. The room was gorgeous though and I liked to people gaze discreetly. Behind me sat two enormous gangsters (upscale hell's angels types) wearing jewelled jackets. Very shiny. Our waiter was solicitous and attentive and I left him a very hefty tip. He suggested we share some dishes and was perfect. Helpful get not obtrusive. Go once for the experience.
If you are eating at Gotham then expect to pay really high prices. Is it worth it? I think so.
This isn't a place where I can eat everyday, but every once and a while, I'd like to come back. My filet mignon was fabulous. Cooked just right. (Medium rare, more to the rare) My friend's was just a little more cooked even though she asked for the same. But they are really good at cooking up another one for you to get it right the 2nd time. The drinks were good. I think Joe Fortes is better for their martini's and cocktails.
