I had the curry beef brisket with rice at $6.95. Nicely presented but where's the beef? 5 small pieces of beef and lots of onion and potatoes. Service was good walking in the door but try getting your bill and leaving. Not so good. Restaurant was clean and roomy. Chairs and tables seemed new. Not returning as there was no value received for my money.
Mrs. C and I were coming back from the airport after a short trip and we were craving some real Vancouver food. Naturally we chose a Chinese restaurant.
The restaurant was clean including the w/c, and comfortable but not fancy inside. We found the service to be fine throughout the meal, and the prices were very reasonable.
We wanted something light, so we had potstickers, congee and chicken curry on rice. All the food was okay, but nothing was particularly outstanding. I was impressed with the huge portion sizes. It was a decent meal at a great price, but if you want Zagat-rated, it isn't here.
menu advertised "fresh fish congee" - instead get frozen fish (still slightly cold and tasted freezer-burnt) that arrived in congee. Enough said about false advertisement here. When confronted by waitress... waitress goes "well, what do you expect from this price?"
What I expect is if you say "fresh" fish congee - the fish is to be fresh - not frozen. Tell me that's not false advertising?
You're not going to get exceptional service - this is a Chinese run joint, and it's quick in - quick out. The food isn't exceptional, and further, they try to put more expensive prices on food that is pretty much of lower grade than comparable chinese restaurants.
Unfortunately, it's the size and the slightly-upscale looking place that brought me to try this place in the beginning. It's the food and attide and service that will keep me away. While other places on the Victoria Drive strip (ie. Mui Garden, Sun Yee, etc) are busy, no wonder customers don't need to wait for a table here.
We were planning to go to a different restaurant close by but it was closed so we went here. Slow service left us wondering if we had chosen well... but the FOOD WAS EXCELLENT! Our sons loved it too! We'll probably order for pick up next time... there were many people doing the same while we waited for service.
We don't generally expect much from cheap take-out food. Not being familiar with the chinese take-out restaurants in East Van, we saw the 1 favourable review on Golden Sparkle and decided to give it a shot.
The price was right and the delivery came on time. Unfortunately the quality of the food didn't follow suit. The chow mein was bland and the chicken in it was soggy. The beef in the beef and broccoli tasted too much like fish sauce. The lemon sauce on the lemon chicken seemed off. We would not order from here again.
