Chinese vegetarian cuisine, by former Bo Kong chef
Food: The food here is amazing! The noodles are all 'pulled' by the chef (he does demonstrations). The 'grandma (here on weekends)' brings out small complimentary appies for everyone. The food is a bit on the oily side, but is acceptable. If it weren't so far away, I would come here more often because the food is really quite amazing
Service: The service is prompt in this family owned business. (After eating there several times, I have concluded that the father is the chef, and the mother and daughter are the waitresses). The staff is very friendly and are willing to accomadate changes in the menu.
Value: Good value! They always gives us complimentary dishes.
Ambiance: This is a very casual restaurant, but I think they could tidy it up a bit. It has 'at home' kind of feeling.
Definitely give it a try!!
The food we ordered was decent, but quite greasy. Service was friendly and prompt, but not exceptional. The main thing that we really did not enjoy was the ambiance. It was a small family restaurant and the tables were close together. Ventilation wasn't all that great either. That evening the table next to us ordered stinky tofu and we had that distinct smell floating to our table all evening. Now I understand that there are a lot of people who actually enjoy that, but for those who don't, this makes for a most unpleasant meal. I don't know how they can solve this problem for the customers, or indeed if they even think it's a problem, since they have decided to include it in the eat-in menu. But I would think twice before going to this restaurant again.
Food is alright and inexpensive. One of us had the beef noodle in soup (recommend) and the other had sliced beef noodle soup which had a funny taste (not recommended). Also shared a chive pancake thing which was different and quite good. Saw the noodles being hand pulled which was a treat. The restaurant is quite tired looking and the first thing that hit me was the unpleasant odour upon entering. Another negative is the staff sits at a communal table and speak in their native language which I believe to be Taiwanese. Waited a long time and had to ask for my bill. Only tried this place because of the high rating on Dinehere.ca Can't see myself returning.
So Bo Kong on Main closed down, and this is where the chefs went. I believe Golden Fortune is now a vegetarian restaurant? I was a major Bo Kong fan, and I find that the food here tastes and looks very much like that of Bo Kong: deliciousness! There wasn't anything we had that night that I didn't like. The only thing that prevents me from going back is 1) location 2) horrible smell inside the restaurant. You know how some restaurants that use carpet have that damp smell? Well, Golden Fortune's got it. As soon as I walked in, I was very displeased with the unpleasant smell. You get used to it after sitting in the restaurant for a while, but I don't really want to step inside again becaues of it.
Had the 'golden fortune' of being recommended to this place and so far so good. I've come here a few times for lunch on the weekend but not yet for dinner. Like most shanghai restaurants I visit, I look for quality in the hot and sour soup and the potstickers. Although the hot and sour soup isn't the best I've tasted, the potstickers are one of the better ones. The owner also hand makes their noodles in front of you in the dining room and that in itself, is worth a visit. Needless to say, the beef noodles is always fresh. Also had the spicy szechuan beans, pan fried shanghai buns, and a few more of the shanghai dim sum dishes and all were very flavorful. To top it off, GRANDMA brings out free starters for all the tables which she makes herself (ie pickled radish, homemade shanghai style kimchi) which is amazing. Very friendly and hospitable family. Decor could be improved but as long as the food and service remains the way it is, can't really complain.
went by yesterday for lunch and had an amazing taiwanese experience! the food was extremely tasty...they have chinese donuts that i love! only on the weekends though also the little dishes the grandmother brings is tasty! beef noodles soup and beef rolls also very good! havent tried everything yet but i soon will...they also have stinky tofu for all the adventures (that explains the smell) i tried some and it was good :) small family ran restaurant. has a good home feeling! i recommened it!
A wonderful little hidden gem in my old neighbourhood. Traditional Asian decore in a cozy setting. The restaurant is staffed by the owner and his family. The fresh hand pulled noodles were so tender and it was very entertaining to watch them being 'pulled'. We had them in our Won Ton. Dumplings were perfectly cooked. Steamed Shanghai buns were great. Service was warm, friendly and timely. Our order to go took no time at all and came with heating instructions from our servers mom. Although this was our first visit, we will count ourselves as regulars from here on.
