It was better when it was BIN 942

I have been a fan of the original Go Fish by the side of Granville Island for many years, so when this new place opened, I decided to give it a try.

I had the salmon sandwich, which, at the original location, was always outstanding no matter what other ingredients and sauces they put in it. However, this time, it was quite bland tasting, and the salmon was a bit overcooked so that it was slightly dry. This sandwich was definitely non-memorable.

Also, halfway through the meal, I started to miss the fresh air and the carefree setting of the original location. It just doesn't feel right sitting in an indoor, very 'urban' setting eating this kind of casual seafood.

Perhaps because I went at an off hour (around 3 pm), the place was almost empty, but at the original location, whatever time you go, it is always busy.

I think the owner should have stuck to the original BIN 942 concept. They are probably not doing as much business here as they were before, when it was BIN 942.

We tried this finally for lunch and it was nice. I had the halibut and chips and my friend had the albacore sandwich. The fish and chips were fine, slightly overcooked but I always found that to be true of the original Go Fish so maybe it is a specific taste thing. My friend said the sandwich was excellent and he would go back and have it again. The service was very good.

Good fish and chips

Ate here on a weeknight and it was pretty quiet in the restaurant. Really enjoyed the halibut and chips - the fish was really fresh and it came with a nice salad and soup. I found the server to be friendly and we didn`t wait for our meal or drinks. Dessert wasn`t as good as the main course but we still enjoyed it. I would plan on going back to try other things on the menu.

Good fish tacos

Go Fish is a new-ish seafood restaurant replacing the long standing Bin 942 on West Broadway. They also have a location down on Fisherman's Wharf just west of Granville Island. I have eaten there a couple times and the food is great although the lineup can be brutally long.

So we popped in to the new location of Go Fish to have a quick snack and try the fish tacos. It turns out they are great. For $11 they were reasonably priced when you consider how much prawns and fish were in them. You couldn't fit anymore ingredients in them without making them just plain messy.

I will return when I am craving fish & chips or fish tacos and don't feel like eating outside or long lineups from the other location.

Disappointed and disgusted.

I went here today because the Granville Island location is closed on Mondays. My friend and I thought the food would be the same at the new location on Broadway. We were mistaken. I can't review on the restaurant or service because my friend went in to pick up the food to go, but the order took about 25 minutes.
We both got three fish tacos and a soup. The tortillas were soggy and the tacos were all on a scewer, which made them fall apart even more. I don't know what kind of fish it was but it was overcooked and rubbery and bits of skin left on it were burnt. The prawns were small and also overcooked and chewy. The sauce was runny, it kind of tasted like barbeque sauce, and there was too much. It tasted really gross. There was a mix of greens, if you could call it that. They were wilted and stringy. For some reason, it came with a side of ketchup, hot sauce, and what looked to be soy sauce.
My friend said the soup was $8. It was so small. The soup broth was thin, tasted like cream and oil and the fish was the same as what was in the tacos. It had very little vegetables in it, just finely chopped carrots and onions.
I don't know why I gave any of it a try after looking at it, it looked almost as bad as it tasted; my fault. It was the worst food I have ever regreted tasting. Needless to say, I could not stomach it. I ate enough to decide it really was as bad as it seemed. The textures and flavour were indescribabley awful. I can't believe they serve this. It was the worst food I've ever had. Disgusting describes it best. Don't bother.

New Go Fish Needs Changes In The Food
By savvy insider of Vancouver (Fairview) (4 Reviews)

Go Fish is a small shack at Fisherman's Wharf just beside Granville Island.

They serve amazing seafood that is delicious with great flavours and is more than reasonably priced.

It has been that way for years and every time we went we enjoyed it thoroughly.

And now there is a new Go Fish kid on the block.

This one is in the South Granville area, on West Broadway, just around the corner from Granville Street.

It once was home to the now defunct Bin 942 that had been serving excellent food for 12 years before being shuttered by legendary owner-chef Gord Martin to make room for Go Fish number two.

The room is long and narrow and there is a nautical modern theme here - chrome and dark blues, booths with stripes of black and white.

But, alas, Go Fish number two needs a lot of work before it can reach the culinary heights of the original Go Fish, and another one of Martins culinary hot spots, Bin 941 on Davie Street.

The menu needs tweaking and needs it fast.

Mind you one of the dishes, out of three, was stellar.

It was the watermelon salad with beautifully sliced sea scallops.

It was stunning in presentation, taste and textures.

The thinly-sliced scallops, so fresh they still had that sea smell about them, were topped off with small flecks of red Serrano chilies.

An oblong piece of icy-cold water melon was topped off with gorgeous heirloom tomatoes, one small red one and a large chunk of a yellow one, alongside a beautiful lime foam. And sitting on top of it all were some small micro greens.

It was a delicious combination - the sweet water melon, balanced by the gorgeous scallops and the hot chilies, the Tequila lime foam adding freshness and those tomatoes with that real tomato taste.

What more could you ask for?

Well you certainly would not ask for the salmon flatbread dish again.

This was plain awful.

The flatbread, nary a char in sight, was an uninspired slab of dough, covered with fresh salmon slices, caperberries and goat cheese.

And whose ideas was it to pair goat cheese with fish - a definite no no?

The strong goat cheese dominated everything and the caperberries with their supposed slight lemon flavour, were not a taste in sight.

The dish had no texture or flavour profile - it was one big goopy mess.

The fish and chips, another stellar dish at the original Go Fish, were okay, the halibut cooked perfectly but the batter was anything but crunchy and crisp.

The chips were all they should have been as was the accompanying cole slaw.

Bottom line: This menu needs some serious tweaking although prices are reasonable. All mains were $13 a pop. As yet there is no website or posted menu for the new location.

Sorry, couldn't resist. Tried it tonight, loved it.Short line up, nothing like the wait down at Granville Island. Awesome fish and chips, great fish tacos and wine prices were fantastic - almost cheap!

Hey, didn't want to write more but the site is making me write 50 words. So great to have Go Fish in my hood, going to be a regular.
