Go Fish is the newest member of the Bin family. It is a seafood shack at Fisherman's Wharf that serves up all that is from the sea. Go Fish is open from 11:30am until 6:30pm.
Food: Fish is perfect with light batter, freshly made, delicious. Love the homemade tartar sauce. Great coleslaw. Another highlight are the tacones (i.e. fish tacos). Easily worth the wait to get all of this food fresh. If you want pre-made food, go to McDonalds. Four stars.
Service: Well, it is what it is. Meaning, they are doing their job to the best of their ability given the constant flow of costumers. I've always found them to be efficient and professional, never rude. Be forewarned, you could wait for half an hour or longer: sit down, relax, and enjoy the great outdoors. Three stars.
Value: Again, this is Vancouver folks and you chose to live here. Stop complaining about high prices. Three stars.
Ambiance: It's the great outdoors. The ocean, the mountains, the marina, the fresh air. Anyone who gives ambiance a low rating perhaps doesn't understand what the word "ambiance" means. Five stars.
This place does great business, it’s in a beautiful location, although a bit out of the way to get for me. Heard about the famous fishnchips and decided to make the effort and give it a try. Friends raved about it, thought it was in competition as one of the best fishnchips they’d ever eaten. Me…not so much, maybe I just don't like fishnchips, I loved the fish tacones though. Don’t know about authenticity, didn’t taste the same as the amazing ones in Mexico. These had their own west coast twist, really simple fresh flavours, basic seasonings with some cole slaw minus the mayo wrapped in a white flour tortilla. The simple flavours really stood out. Not authentic, but incredibly enjoyable.
The service was efficient, I guess. I didn't think they were particularly friendly which was fine, it's basically an excellent fast food shack. But I found they get kind of surprised and irritated if the customer isn't the typically west coast friendly and polite towards them, but rather, just matches their slightly stand-off-ish manner. They like to make remarks to each other about customers not getting out of the way, not knowing how to order properly, etc., but when I made a remark back to my friend that no one told me it would take over half an hour just to get a couple of tacos to go, they seemed sort of surprised that I said anything at all, and then two of them started saying to each other that they make good food, not fast food which I assumed was said for my benefit…and on it went back and forth. So I would say, they seem efficient but not really all that polite, but then they expect the customers to be polite to them! So the fact that they were so sensitive given their rather cold, snobby personalities was a bit of a surprise to me...I mean, you don't have to be friendly, but at least be professional. Still, it’s just a take out place and at most maybe 30 words are exchanged, so I'm really not all that concerned about service.
Absolutely horrible. I sidled up to the counter today and the lady goes "You know we open at 11:30 a.m. right?" It was 11:15 a.m. I'm a local and I didn't know... I must not have realized the door was supposed to be closed.
Last time I tried ordering tacones but didn't know how to pronounce it so I asked the lady taking the order. She looks at me, furrows her brows and goes, "tacos?" Riiiiight. Don't get me wrong, the food was good and worth the price, but worth the attitude? Uh uh.
Seems like such a hip spot but goodness... I hope other people have better experiences. From now on I'll just walk the extra two minutes into Granville Island.
I would like it.. i've been twice now.. chips are small and not potatoey (think shards of dark brown bits).. the fish is skimpy, but the colesalw is good. The oyster sandwich is not bad, but personally, I rather go to Tony's where its cheaper and comes with decent fries... if I were a tourist, I wouldn't mind this place but since I've had better in Vancouver/Richmond/WestV , no, I wouldn't go back.
I made the mistake of taking out of town guest to this fish shack on BC Day.
The order taker tells everyone their order is ready in 20 minutes - which is not true, we waited 45 minutes and got yelled at by another server for being on the deck.
Lets just say the fish was not worth the wait and being yelled at left a bad impression on my guests who said that this is a place for a Chef Ramsey makeover (kitchen nightmare). I think that server should really get another job.
The fish/chips are okay, not the best I have had, and the oyster poor boy is not what we expected. Kind of small portions for what we paid.
Guess I won't be going back to this shack for a long time - poor sevice and so so food .
I love Go Fish. I go there once a week including a couple of snowstorms last winter, they were still open and the service was great. The staff have an east coast vibe (extremely rare in Vancouver) and I don't mean Toronto I mean the real East Coast. I'm from NS and half of my family are from Nfld. I grew up with seafood lots of lobster, halibut and cod growing up from my relatives. I was so happy to discover Go Fish here in Vancouver. I don't know why some people are claiming that the staff are not friendly enough, I guess they're looking for that west coast artificial friendly smile and the mantra 'The customer is always right', maybe they should go to one of the many chain restaurants which will gladly serve you the cookie cutter insincere well rehearsed smile and service. I prefer to be served by real people who make excellent food and support our local economy. Go Fish has fresh food with fresh service.
I have been here twise and both visits have been disappointing. I decided to give this place anohter chance after the first visit, but unfortunately the second visit has re-affirmed my initial instinct of never giving this place another try.
During my last visit, I had the cod and chips, and my husband had the halibut and chips. The fish seemed dry and the fries were greasy and soggy. I guess grease is not a surprise considering it is fried, but soggy fries are gross. We also tried the fish tacos. While the fish tacos were good, it is not enough to make me want to go back to this place.
The service was extremely poor. This was evident when my husband and I were seated on the side while eating andthere was a line of about 10 people. The couple at the very end of the line were told by one of the worker that they were cutting off the line just right infront of them. It was not like as if the couple had just arrived at the end of the line, nor was there a sign indicating that they were no longer letting people line up. The couple asked why that was, the worker told them that they do it everynight. I looked at my watch and it was only 6:15, and this place is suppose to be open until 6:30. The couple who was turned away was definitely irate, and rightfully so. Who does that to paying customers????? If you are going to cut the line off 15 minutes prior to your advertised closing time, then maybe you should advertise your closing time accordingly. That is just poor business practice.
If you are on Granville Island, Tony's Fish and Oyster Cafe is less than a 5 minute walk fron Go Fish. They have better food and definitely better service. Also, Pajo's (various locations) is definitely worth a visit as well (Fish and chips served on a newspaper cone).
I ventured to Go FIsh on Sunday afternoon last week to try out the fish tacones. I tried the salmon tacone and the tuna tacone. The salmon tacone was by far my favorite! However, the tuna tacone was good given the exceptional combination of various flavours and ingredients. There could be a bit of a line-up. I had to wait 12 minutes for my tacones. The tacones were $9 each. It might be a good idea to call ahead to get take-out instead of waiting in line.
We've been gong to Go Fish since they opened on sunny days.
Favourites include:
Salmon tacones - amazing grilled salmon in a fresh tortilla, great slaw and delish slaw.
The daily special tacone: never had a bad one, always really great combination.
Gazpacho: when they have the gazpacho as the daily soup, get it! they put pumpkin seeds in it and wow, so delish.
Battered Fried Fish - I never order it, I've enjoyed a couple bites, just not my cup of tea.
The Fries - so so good, I've never had them that they weren't crispy and in abundance, but maybe it depends on the day (after reading reviews below)?
BBQ salmon sandwich: Great chunk of salmon grilled on a portugese bun, I love it.
We always bring out of towners there on sunny days, never once had a complaint, everyone loves it.
To skip the line, call ahead and place your order by phone!
When friends from Calgary wanted to eat fish and chips we went to Go Fish. We went there because we were already at Granville Island and the ambience seemed OK to us. No, not the parking lot, but the water and the boats!
Ugh! That's all I can say about the tasteless food, which was a basket of soggy uncooked fish, about 25 (yes, I counted!) soaking wet with oil chips and a small cup of raw and bitter something they called coleslaw. This was definitely not what we had expected after standing in line for about half an hour. Of course when I asked to speak to the owner; (after all, why would we pay $$$$ for trash); I was told he was not there, and when I asked to speak to the manager, he was unavailable! Hmmmmm....
And yes, there can be a myriad of excuses for this dismal experience, but they would still be excuses!
Go Fish would do better to Go Learn some basics.
Just came back from our Sunday ritual of grabbing lunch from Go Fish before stopping by Oyama's Sausage for incredible pate. Hands down, Go Fish offers the best fish in its price point in Vancouver. I only say "fish" because its chippies are sometimes overdone or underdone. Tacones and fish soup are also our favourites. Service is as good as it gets for a busy concession stand set-up and the ambiance..well, thank god we have awesome view of false creek. Otherwise, you're facing a parking lot and sitting on a patio.

We came here for lunch (4 of us) and ordered two orders of the fish tacones (think wraps), two orders of the scallop burger and one order of fries. It was a bit of a cold day and it started to rain when we got there, but we still found a table under the patio. The place was busy as usual.
The food *is* good, to state a fact. Granted, we didn't order the staple fish & chips and decided to be a little more adventurous, we were rewarded. The fish in the tacones were nicely grilled and the sauce in the scallop burgers really made it tasty. Even the coleslaw they serve with the entrees tasted better than your standard coleslaw (no mayo). The fries were, well, fries. Shred a potato and deep fry. Add ketchup.
The food was a bit messy to eat however -- the tacones especially. The sauce just drips right out and it's not like there's a clean and convenient bathroom nearby. If you order the tacones, definitely go with the salmon. It's more flavourful than the tuna.
Note that the food is pricey. This is near Granville Island, after all. $13 for 5 scallops slapped in between two pieces of bread may not seem worth it at first, but it *does* taste pretty damn good.
I work in the area and like coming here for lunch in the winter as opposed to the summer, when it's very crowded and it takes an hour to get your food. Usually order the salmon tacone, which comes with a nice light cup of coleslaw, and the soup of the day, which is always delicious. It's a hot, filling lunch for under $10.
They encourage calling ahead to order. Do that--it will save you time. The folks working there are as nice as they can be, even when it's super busy. There is no real ambiance to the place, other than it being a shack on Fisherman's Wharf in the middle of beautiful False Creek.
It's charming nonetheless, and very much recommended.
I finally went after hearing so much. It was COLD being right on the water. The lineup wasn't too long, but it still took a while to get to the counter. The prices are quite high, especially considering they have almost no overhead (it's basically a kind of shack with some deep fryers). The fish was excellent, cooked perfectly and a good-sized portion. The chips, opn the other hand, were overcooked and small. There were lots of them, but that doesn't make up for being overcooked.
I love this place. I ussually only visit in the late spring, early fall as it is so busy in the heat of the summer. The Fish & Chips are great! Beautiful fish, outstanding cole slaw and the chips are tasty! The service is, what it is. You wait in line, you order your fish and you wait. I don't expect mush from a fish shack in terms of service, except a smile, my order correct and a garbage can that is not overflowing. This is my favorite fish & chips in the city!
Agree with other reviews...tried the Fish & Chips finally but was not any better than other Fish & Chips. Big portion but the Chips were NOT good. Hard, cold, and not tasty.
However, have tried the Albacore Tuna Sandwhich, Fish Tacos and Oyster Sandwich...all very good. Too bad there's nowhere to sit.
As some others have mentioned, you'll probably receive better quality fish and chips if you come here at a slow time - say early afternoon during the week.
Fish is often poorly butchered scraps covered in soggy (and usually undercooked) batter. The chips have been harsh and frankly disgusting each time I've eaten here.
The service here is a disaster. Each times I have made an order for three or more people I have been overcharged/something has been mixed up. The 'American Apparel' attitude of the staff is better accustomed to working at a quiet coffee shop, not a busy food establishment.
With the equally popular (and even lesser quality) frozen fish and chips restaurant on Granville Island providing Go Fish! with its only competition, I think the state of this place comes down to a simple 'who cares?'. The crowds will still line up regardless of the quality.
Edmonton has great fish and chip shops with pride and quality - why not central Vancouver?
Do not bother with this outside cafe if the line-up is long. The quality suffers. The fish was crunchy & tasteless & the fries were nothing special either.
We like the view but would not go back.
The prices were decent.
The soup was way too hot(spicy) which it should not have been.
All in all, we should have asked for our money back!!
We had the Thai Sesame Soup and that was the best part! Fish was overly battered, although the fish itself was really good. Chips get a grade EH rating.
The atmosphere is sooo cute! It's a little tangent away from the main island, but it's nicely tucked away from the pack at the market. Go there during off-peak hours because the lineup to this outdoor patio can stretch a nautical mile.
Overall, go there for anything but the fish and chips. (Oyster Po' Boys, Albacore Tuna sandwiches, Scallop Burger, Ceviche, Fish Tacones...)
I enjoy Go Fish for its simplicity - good food, decently priced, non pretentious fish and chips. Served in a simple chinese dim sum container, eating halibut with crisp fries and chipotle mayo on a bench as if on a picnic, brings back nostalgic moments of my childhood.
The set up is very small and thus, the wait time for your fish and chips can be rather long. Its a great stop to get energized with a snack while going on a bikeride around granville Island.
The fish and chips are a bit greasy and oily - but how else could you make deep fried battered fish? It comes with the package I guess.
Worth a try, at least for the experience.
