Gigi's offers Italian and Greek cuisine in a relaxed atmosphere. Large menu available for take out and delivery.
Went there for dinner with family, ambience was nice and clean with an old vibe ala Spaghetti Factory.
I had been there once before and the ribs and steaks were superb. This time I brought the parents along but they got too excited and order tons of other stuff but only had 2 half orders of ribs. *sigh* But here goes..
Kalamari & Zucchini : Great! The batter is an even thin layer so they were crunchy but not too oily.
Pizza : We had 1/2 seafood special and 1/2 Everything special. Lots of ingredients, taste good, and yes it's too loaded to support itself. Dough is very good, no oil dripping like other pizza joints.
Ribs : It was a Ribs/Pasta combo, they use the smaller sized baby back ribs and they are soooo good. Flavourful, cooked just perfect with the tips approaching the crunchy side, juicy throughout and nothing is burnt. Better than other places which used bigger meat sections, and the middle would be dry / parts with no flavour / areas being burnt.
I would choose these guys over Applebee's, and Montana's.
The Pasta and Wings were ok, decent portion and taste.
Baked potato & Salads : Like some other reviews here have said.. a bit bare.
I will go back again, and will save my stomach for the Ribs and Zucchini and Kalamari. Plus I'll be trying the steak. Pizza will be on the table if there's a big group, but otherwise sorry, ribs come first.
Oh and the prices is not too bad.. $16 for ribs and pasta combo I believe. Services is good, nothing to complain about. (pissing rain last night and the restaurant had only 4 tables plus some take outs.)
I've been eating pizza at Gigis on Broadway since the late 1980's. For many years it had, for me, the best pizza in Vancouver. In recent years, though, the quality of the food has slipped. Often the pizza comes out with a very soggy crust. I always ask that it be done on the well-done side, and when I do that there's no problem.
I remember when I found out how long it takes to cook a pizza (8 to 12 minutes), I was absolutely shocked. You never -- NEVER -- get it in less than 30 minutes, even if you're the only customer there. That's a constant source of frustration. Sometimes I phone the order in from my car, so that it's closer to being ready when I get there.
The serving staff though are consistently great, friendly, and helpful. But I think ownership/management needs an overhaul. The 80's are over. The neighborhood has changed, and the qualities necessary to thrive have changed too. They don't seem to get that.
My boyfriend and I love going to Gigi's especially late night. The food is always good and the servers are always friendly. Love the garlic bread and the baked lasagne is excellent. The shrimp salad and the spanakopita is great too. Thumbs up!
Went here for dinner tonight with a couple of friends. This place is great for "North American" Italian food but if you are looking for authentic Italian this would not be it. The service was decent and we waited a bit longer than usual for the food to arrive. The baked spaghetti with meatballs was again, decent. However, I've had much better meatballs elsewhere. Would recommend this restaurant for casual "North American" Italian food.
The baked spaghetti here is the best! I don't go anywhere else. For $10 dollars you can have yourself a wonderful meal.
The ambiance is good and the service is exceptional.
I would come back again
Looking at the previous reviews I would probably have not eaten here.
But all I can do is speak from my own personal experience.
A work colleague and I called in for a quick lunch..........pricing made it a steal.
To be fair I wasn't expecting much, but it turned out to be a pleasant surprise.
I had the lasagna and my friend cream pasta, both of found it to be tasty and a decent portion.
With a couple of beers under $25. That's value.
The Pizza slices were all different sizes making me wonder if they were recycled from leftovers.
The "ribs" were basically a mouthful of ribs under which I discovered a nasty thigh/drumstick combo. Since when are these ribs?
The salad was wilted and tasteless. The spaghetti was overcooked noodles and harsh tomato dressing (no meat).
The delivery was so slow. Well over an hour for a short drive. Unprofessional delivery persons.
The management pressured me for cash rather than credit card even thoughthey advertise credit cards accepted.
Something funny going on here. Threw away most of it.
Yes it is true, I tend to surrender ONLY because they are conveniently located downtown and deliver until 3 am.
First experience I ordered the tortellini pana with cream sauce. Let me tell you that this is by far the blandest pasta I have ever tasted in my life. (that includes domino's attempt to be Italian)
Almost tasted like 80% flower/water and 20% Parmesan cheese. (sauce wise)
The actual pasta itself was undercooked, and filled with "cheese". NOT QUITE. More like chemically produced cheese mush bought at superstore.
The second meal I decided to try was the chicken caccitori. Two pieces of chicken bones came in a box of tomato sauce with a few spices. I thought that maybe they had accidentally packed a patron's left over plate from the diner, but no..in fact the check was supposed to be fresh with perhaps a couple bites of meat on it. I was almost livid.
The calamari is indeed ALL batter and no squid. It has zero taste just like everything else on the menu.
The halibut bites came in a box of a pound of oil, with guess again...all batter and NO taste.
Now here is where I am really disappointed in them. THEIR DELIVERY DRIVERS!!! They have three that I am aware of, or unfortunately encountered.
One short Asian man who speaks minimal English actually asked me for a tip. He gave me my food and said "is that all"? I said excuse me? "Is that all..I don't get more?" he says!! THE FUNNY PART IS - I was actually going to get more from my apartment until the greedy bastard asked for it, and my reply was "why yes it is" and I shut the door. Keep in mind this time my bill was $30+ and I gave him $3 extra for what? doing his job an being a prick? sounds like a warranted tip eh? lol
Next time I ordered I got the same prick who asked for a tip last time, and received nothing but a miserable attitude with him. This time he called me from his personal phone when he arrived and asked me to come downstairs to get my food!!! I said are you ****** kidding me? If I wanted to come downstairs I would have walked out my door and purchased food." (I live within seconds of various subway,711,burrito places) But I didn't want to leave the house that evening. I ordered him to buzz me which is what he is SUPPOSED to do.
on and on and on..
A few more orders with forgotten dishes, wrong meals, mistaken bill. Rude reception a couple times.
Point is- STAY AWAY unless your desperate!!!
The first time I ordered, it was amazing. The next time the pizza arrived cold, fine I'll just warm it in the oven. The third time I ordered it was cold again and they got the drinks wrong. Fine, now I'll call and tell them. I call and the "manager" tells me they'll credit me for my next order. I order the next time and they tell me that they won't give me the credit. I even went down to ask for the manager (also the owner) and explain the situation and how much I had loved their pizza and constantly told people about them. He said it was out of his hands.
They once upon a time were the best local pizza joint, now....don't even bother, they don't give a damn about their customers.
I took my lady friend to Gigi's for dinner last saturday around 8 pm. This is the 1st & last time I will go there. We ordered a Chichi drink and the waistress says she will try to make one. What does that mean?
The calamri on the Calamari Platter was tastless, almost all batter. The ribs must have been from a small, starved animal. The worst was the BBQ chicken! The chicken was cold to luke warm! I asked the waitress to heat it up and she did. It came back microwaved. I dug into the dark meat (a thigh) and chewed on it. It was almost like jerky. Then I pulled the meat back and it peeled off to reveal some black ,rotting flesh underneath! I do not know if it was cancer or what! I did not want to make a scene, so I discreetly placed it on a side plate. It was absolutely disgusting.
The salad was very fresh and the garlic bread was good.
BBQ chicken & Ribs are too expensive for the quantity. The chicken was so disgusting. I will never go back there.
My SO and I thought this would be a good place to call since they are not Panago and figured their service would be good. I called and was placed on hold without being asked. After a couple minutes of being placed on hold, I was asked what I wanted. I ordered a medium vegetarian with no onions + a small cheescake. The woman on the other end of the phone advised me it would not be long after providing my address. One hour later, our pizza was at our door. Our pizza tasted lukewarm + the dough was soggy. I did not provide the delivery driver a tip. I called around 45 minutes later to inform them that my pizza had still not shown up. The gentleman who was on the other phone said it would be another 5 minutes. Never again. I will never suggest this take out place to anyone. I don't know what annoyed me more - the fact that we are only half an hour away or the fact that I was placed on hold right away without a question.
We ordered delivery from Gigi's one night while staying in a hotel in downtown Vancouver. The delivery man was so vile and so rude to us - acting visibly frustrated that we had kept him waiting in the lobby. telling us that we were slowing him down on his deliveries and basically that we were a pain in the ass. I have never been treated like that before by anyone who has to make customer service part of his profession. We made sure to reward his attitude by not giving a tip.
Having had to endure east the pizza would have been worth it. Mais non. It was the soggiest pizza I have ever had, and the toppings (mostly veggies) were old and tasteless. We also ordered a pita bread with dip; the bread was dry and crumbly and the dip had this watery quality to it that made it fairly disgusting. With the combination of horrible service and equally horrible food, it's a certainty that we will never patronize Gigi's again.
They just can't seem to get it right. The service has been fine, but the last few times I've ordered from here, it's been really weird. The cheese is about the only thing that's right on. The pepperoni is really soft like salami, so they not differ? The crust was wet and flopping all over the place. The chefs have work to do before I eat there again.
Before that experience, I ordered delivery. The pizza was probably left in the heat lamp for 30 minutes before remembering to deliver it, 70 minutes and one dried up crunchy pizza later, we called for a refund but had to bring it in. Instead of spending another hour on the bus taking back a pizza we couldn't eat, we threw it out and ordered Chinese. Mediocre at Best.
The baked potatoe was totally discusting! it wasnt cooked enough & it tasted like an old potatoe that had been sitting in my grammas moldy basement for too long! The salad was a joke! Iceberg lettuce with 1 slice of cucomber on the top! The "garlic" bread didnt have any garlic on it! so it was simply a buttered toast! The chicken was OK, but it didnt come with dipping sauce or anything, so eating a half chicken dry like that is not too exciting! So I through the whole thing away 5 minutes into it & had a bowl of cereal instead! 17$ + tax + tip straight in the garbage!
I've been a regular patron of Gigi's but after tonight's debacle I will never order from them again. The driver arrived with a malfunctioning debit machine (I had told them I was paying by debit when I ordered). We spent 25 minutes in the hallway of my apartment as he made futile attempts to process the transaction by both debit and credit card. He offered no solution to the problem except to ask that I come out to the curb (in my long johns!) to get a credit card slip. I finally called the restaurant myself in frustration - he hadn't thought to do so - and the manager told me, and I quote: "What do you expect me to do about it? Sometimes the debit machine doesn't work!" He then talked to the driver - on *my* cell phone - and refused to continue the conversation with me when they were done - as it turned out they were putting my VISA payment through on the phone without my knowledge, but I didn't know any of this because they were speaking another language.
By the time the order was processed - about a half hour later, and with a trail of cancelled transaction slips that I'm going to have to reconcile against my bank and credit card statements - the pizza was cold and inedible. When I called back to speak to the manager about it he I could not believe how incredibly rude and insulting he was. As far as he was concerned it was not his problem, it was not his responsibility to do anything about it, and if I didn't like the food I could wait for the driver to come back and pick it up. I am a very pleasant a patient person in situations like this and I have never, ever been treated this way. Eventually I demanded that he reverse the charge on my VISA. He hung up on me.
The driver still hasn't returned, I've been charged over thirty bucks for food I couldn't eat, and I have never in my life been spoken to so rudely in a retail/restaurant context as I was by their manager. They've lost my business permanently.
