Food: Ordered the ferrero rocher and creme brulee ice cream on a waffle cone. Outstanding flavours and delicious crunchy waffle cone.
Value: $3.75 for two scoops on a waffle cone isn't bad at all considering it's downtown. This place definitely stands out in terms of value (ex. compare it to Qoola).
I will DEFINITELY return when I'm in the neighbourhood.
Still the best gelato I've ever had. They have the most unique flavors (rose!) Service is always friendly and fairly efficient despite the large crowd that gathers on a sunny day. I also appreciated the low-cal, energy booster flavors and other flavors that took into consideration dietary needs. Overall, a good selection of changing flavors and a comfortable place to rest in between a long day of shopping.
Value: good. They allow you to mix flavors and pricing seems in line with other gelato places and for a few bucks, it's a nice treat on a sunny day.
One of the most flavourful for that particular flavour. Plenty of others as well. Never needed to go back to La Casa on Venables nor to Mario's/Amaretto Gelato ever again! Except for Mario's juice/ice tube thingies.
Went here for a treat. Had the large cup (4 flavours) and a coffee. Came to a bit over 8 bucks.
I noticed that they changed the format. It use to be 2 scoops - with up to four flavours - a half scoop each. This was always confusing to some customers (I could tell as the staff had to patiently explain it to many customers). Now it is nice and simple - four scoops - four flavours. Nice and simple.
My favourite flavours are the pistachio and white chocolate. I tried the marzipan and "blue sky" which is like marshmallow flavour. As usual, the gelato was yummy and a nice consistency. I also had an Americano, it was a bit on the bitter side - but it still went okay with the gelato.
The service was good, the server brought my coffee (in a ceramic cup with saucer) to the table.
Please note - this is a cash only establishment.
I wish they would bring back the gelato non gelato. This was a mousse like concoction (it was not frozen) which I rather enjoyed. I was probably among the few that liked it and they must have discontinued it.
All in all - a very nice treat.
I was really craving gelato the other day, so a group of us from work ventured over to Mondo Gelato after lunch at the Thai House.
It had been a while since I was in there, and I forgot how many flavours there are. They now limit your samples to 3 per visit, but I didn't really see a problem with that. They are not there to hand out free gelato all day, they are running a business. There are lots of people who just go in there to get as many samples as they can and then leave, so I don't blame them for imposing a limit. I think you generally know what you want when you are there anyway, and samples are good way to help you choose if you are really undecided or have just never tried a certain flavour before. Anyway, I digress.
The servings are pretty good for the price you pay, especially when compared to somewhere like Marble Slab, where it's over $5 for a single scoop.
I'm glad Mondo Gelato is close to my work - it's a nice treat on a sunny afternoon and I'll go back again and again. :)
The gelato is amazing and tasty. I might have to say that it's one of the best I've tried. I had tiramisu and raspberry. They were what they are suppose to taste like! Creamy, and flavorful.
Service was okay. It was fast, but the staff didn't look too happy working there. Great value. The pricing is about the same as elsewhere for the amount of gelato you get. Two ice-cream sized scoops (any two flavors) for $3.75 or four scoops for $6. There are additional sizes to pick as well. Ambiance was good. It was clean and tidy. There were actually seats for us to sit down and enjoy the gelato.
I finally had a chance to check out Mondo Gelato, which had many flavours to pick from, I think about 40 flavours. I had to try the peanut butter & chocolate Gelato, and it didn't disappoint, creamy, lots of flavour and the right amount of Peanut butter & chocolate.
This place must do alot of take out, since it lacks comfortable chairs, that where cheap plastic, all weather chairs..They need to invest in decent chairs, unless their concept is to buy it and leave to eat your ice cream. It wasn't too busy when I walked in and found it to be tidy, clean and organized.
Will be back to explore other flavours. Next gelato visit will be take out.
So I haven't been to Mondo Gelato in a while, but I love this place. Now it's all different. They limit it to three samples and the staff all look weirdly at you for sampling. I remember before that the staff wasn't that friendly either, it's a boring minimum wage job.
Before they used to have limitless sampling and they let you take your time in deciding. Now they ask you every two seconds if you are ready to order.
Also while prices have gone up, although that's a given lately, prices for everything have gone up, the portions have shrunk! I remember before the two scoops were two generous scoops. Now they are mini-scoops that are carefully portioned in the scoop to prevent you from getting even one single drop extra.
I have this thing with ice cream or gelato where I can never finish it, but this visit I could finish my portions. Something is definitely different.
Also before they were relaxed about doing half-scoops so you could try extra flavours but now they were grim-faced and just said no when I asked. I don't see any reason for them not to do it apart from efficiency.
I understand that Mondo Gelato is a business which is global franchise now, but I wish they had kept some of their mom & pop aspects that made us love Mondo Gelato to begin with.
Also they have a captive audience, they do offer a good quality product and the other choices for good gelato are somewhat limited. So yes you will get my gelato dollars, however I will grumble as I don't like these new changes.
The Lower Mainland seems to be a crapshoot for food and desserts. Rarely is it ever incredible and when it is good, it's probably only the best in town. I think that's one point reviewers need to be clear about.
Mondo fits the bill. It's your typical gelato place with few seats and lots of vibrant colours to draw you in. The gelato is definitely the best I've had around town (arguable between this and Amato/Mario's Gelato). It's consistent in quality, texture and taste. This is probably the closest I will get to having decent quality gelato short of flying to the UK or Italy.
If there is better elsewhere in town let me know.
Mondo's has some of the best and most unique flavors of gelato I've tasted. I really like the fact that they will let you try as many flavors as you want before you make up your mind. That was the only way I was going to try rose flavored gelato. Who knew that I would enjoy flower flavored gelato so much? It was like your tastebuds suddenly learned to smell.
I'm a big fan of the sorbets at Mondo's. They're a lot lighter than gelato and is perfect for a little dessert after a big dinner. Their pineapple and lemon sorbets are really good. The grapefruit sorbet is another one of my favorites. It's got a strong flavor, so perfect for tiny little bites that will last a long time while people watching on Robson or hanging with friends.
I always come here to have some of the best gelato in Van. I find that their gelatoes are very smooth and are not too sweet, it's just right. Some of my top pick flavours include: pistachio, coffee, muesli (a bit sour but it's good), dark chocolate, and ferrerro rocher. It's such a great place to go cuz they don't only offer gelato, they also offer yogurt and sorbetto for people who are lactose intolerant. I will definitely come back here for more.
the sorbetto (pink grapefruit and green apple) were delicious.
But at 500 calories for the two of them, they better be good!
i was shocked how much calories a little scoop could have.
anyway, i say they are cheap as i got gelato in a cup and they didnt have covers. So i asked for a second cup to use as a cover. they wanted to charge me 25 cents!
thats ridiculous, considering i paid 4$ for two liitle scoops of sorbetto!
but it was damn good.
Granted, I'm not some sort of gelato expert or fanatic, so I can't speak with any real authority on things gelato-related. However, I really do enjoy the gelato I've had at Mondo (especially the watermelon flavour..mmm). It's a great treat after a long day of shopping, especially when you're with friends and can get a bunch of different flavours to share.
Service is geared towards being quick and efficient when it's busy, but when I've dropped in during non-peak times the employees have generally been quite friendly and accomodating - offering samples of any flavour we wanted to try, allowing us ample time to make our choices, etc.
The ambiance is not spectacular but for what it is, it's not bad. I've always had a good time when I come here and will certainly be back when I'm in the area.
I have always like this place and I feel the Gelatos here have a slight edge over other Glato places. I have always enjoyed the Grapefruit Gelato and the Guava Gelato. I think they are quite good. There is another place on Kingsway that is awesome with slightly better Ambience. But over all not a bad place.
Awesome gelato ice-cream especially the after eight. Really tastes like after eight chocolate! The ice-cream tastes absolutely outstanding but there's no fly-to-the-sky feeling. haha, but still awesome highly recommended ice-cream there.
My friend and I shared a mondo sized (largest) cup, in which you can put up to 6 different scoops. All were delicious. Unique flavours include (but not limited to) whiskey, green tea, and latte. I'd go back any day of the week. A real treat for gelato and ice cream fans alike!
I went here after dinner last night, even though I was stuffed from eating at Salam Bombay. I had the limone and the green apple. Green apple was a bit sweet, but that was probably because of the tartness of the limone. I also had a taste of the chocolate orange.
Yummy stuff, is all I can say.
I go to Mondo at least twice a week. Guava and black sesame are my favourite although most of the other flavour that I tried are pretty good too. The place is quite clean and service is fast although there are always people waiting.
Mmmmm black sesame gelato!
(and pistaccio...and pink grapefruit...)
I think Mondo Gelato is the best gelato place in Vancouver. Very good price for so much variety (I work in Starbucks and even with my partner discount I only get one drink at the price of 3 or 4 gelato scoops). The people are friendly and always nice and patient about sampling and answering questions. Place is kept pretty clean (they bus often). I love their logo too.
Another thing to add is that they offer gelatos that are soy-based (no diary, no sugar, no fat) and some sorbetto (no diary and fresh fruit). mmm
I'm not sure what all the rave reviews are about here, but I've been to Mondo's many a time, and I've never found it 5-star worthy. Don't get me wrong, it's good, but no different than any other decent gelato shop. It's often crowded though, and I've sometimes noticed it smelling a little strange. Other than that, no real complaints, but I just had to get my two cents in, as in terms of gelato quality, I don't think people should be deceived into thinking they're getting the best gelato in Vancouver.
