Went here with my two young children for a gelato fix.
I remember a few years ago that Mondo use to sell "Gelato Non Gelato" which was a non-frozen mousse like concoction which I quite enjoyed. I asked the dour looking server if they still carried this. The server gave me a vacant, deer-in-the-headlights sort of look. I repeated my question and described "gelato non gelato" - she proceeded to tell me that they had soy gelato. I laughed and said, "well, if you don't know what I'm talking about, the answer is "no - you aren't serving it anymore." Please note - I was not being rude or nasty to the girl - although she did appear to be dumber than a sack of hammers. She still gave me a vacant stare.
Anyways, next question for our no-brains server. Mondo use to allow 1/2 scoops so that up to two flavours may be choosen for a single scoop, up to four flavours for a double scoop, etc. Again, I might as well been trying to explain nuclear physics to the server.
This time, I suggested that the managers should have let her know about past policies. She suggested that I could speak to the manager if I had a problem with her.
Frankly - if it wasn't for my two kids - I would have walked out at that point.
As I didn't want to make my children cry for not receiving ice cream - I ordered from the stupid girl. As other reviewers have lamented - the scoops were tiny. They might as well have been half-sized!
I ordered my normal favourite for myself - Pistachio and a dark chocolate. I found the texture not as creamy as before and the pistachio that I remembered as wonderful flavourful had no taste at all!
IT is a pity - I have found memories of enjoying gelato at this location when I lived in the West End.
Both service and product have taken a nose-dive and I will not be returning.
The one thing I've noticed about Mondo's, is the cheap, tacky, plastic chairs they seem to have in their stores. Do they not know how to buy decent chairs that aren't from the plastic world?
I ordered Banana Strawberry with White Chocolate, and wow did it taste awesome. I got to try a sample, and with that choice, gobble up my gelato. This location wasn't busy, not sure if people left town for the long weekend, or they open at later time, the server & her boss, where not friendly or talkative.
Good location and I can see this spot being busy on a hot day. Gelato is good, must pay cash, with 2 or 4 scoops for your choice of Gelato.
Will be back at either location for take out, until they buy new chairs.
Dropped by for a late sugar fix. Figured we would pass on the Robson location this time around. Quite the difference, and not exactly in a good way.
My friend ordered the tiramisu and cinammon mocha while the girlfriend and I shared the pannacotta and the same cinammon mocha. The pannacotta was the better of the two, but lacked the creaminess normally found. The cinammon mocha was chalky and was found to be a wasted choice. Scoop sizes were beyond dwarfism - just a hair bigger than a golf ball, though with faux quality like that, who'd want more? But wait..there's more! Increased prices for a scoop of their concoctions.
Same colour scheme like other Mondos, but this one echoes the calls of what happens when the staff don't care. It's a bit drab, dirty and there were annoying little nats hovering over us while we were forcibly enjoying our frozen delights. The lone standing, half-dying foliage at the end of one of the tables was purely ornamental, as was the individual vases with wilted flowers sitting at each table.
We stayed in due to the inclement weather, but the 2 staff there looked more than ready to leave. Little reason to come back here.
My friend ordered an ice cream cake from here 2 days ago with coconut and mango flavours and it was awesome. Not too sweet, very satisfying but not too creamy cuz it's a gelato so it's made using cream. Will definitely come back again for more ice cream. I can't comment on the price cuz I didn't pay for it but my friend didn't complain on the price so I think it's reasonable.
came here with family and was expecting more flavours of gelato so i was a little disappointed with that... however, the ice cream was still solid and reasonablypriced ($3.75/two scoops)
the place was a little small.. when theres a line up, u can barely get through to check the other flavours but of course it is a dessert place afterall..
service itself was good... there was only one girl behind the counter and she was doing a good job with all the people wanting samples and making orders the same time.
overall, would recommend!
This place is always lined up on Denman but well worth the short wait.
The Gelato is very good and they also have a huge selection including some sorbet choices for a non-dairy alternative. I always get on scoop of Pistachio and one scoop Ferraro Rochet gelato and it does not disappoint. My girlfriend always has the White Chocolate and Praline and they are equally as good. Price is $3.35 for two scoops in a cone or cup.
Worth a visit
I normally go to the one on Robson but decided to take the family to the one on Denmen for a change. We have always had a great experience at the Robson one but I have to say that both the service and the gelato at Denmen was less than acceptable.
For the gelato, it was not the same, I echo with GMT in the last review. It wasn't as "fresh", and some were even melty.
Onto the atmosphere, it was dirty and you can feel that some spots were dusty and even though they weren't busy, the staff didn't bother to clean up by wiping the tables, etc.
Service was poor, period.
1. I was about to pay and was made to wait because the manager was too busy giving attitude to the staff, right in front of customers (just my family in the store). No apology given for making me wait.
2. when my family and I were eating the gelato, we had a nice moment with our 2-year-old so I took out the camera to take a quick snap. After I finished taking the picture, I can feel somebody just staring at me in a very unfriendly way. I looked and it was the manager or supervisor (some young girl). Anyways, she stared at me and as soon as we had eye contact she said "Absolutely no picture taking in here", and paraded to the front of the store and pointed to the tiny worn out sign. All that with an "I'm all rightous attitude, if you don't like it just leave" kind of vibe. She read us the sign as if we were retards.
I think it's ok to have store policy, but usually storekeepers or restaurants are nice about it and would put it very nicely if it is an issue. Anyways, we walked down Denmen after we finished and checked out a couple of other ice cream/gelato parlours and noticed that there is no such "no picture policy" there.
We won't ever go back and would encourage others not to. There are many other ice cream/gelato places down the street with better service/atmosphere.
Even on a cold, wintery day, nothing beats a delicious bowl of gelato after dinner. We had dinner on Denman St. and stopped for half hazelnut and half pistachio gelato at Mondo, and it was wonderful! The texture is rich and creamy, and the flavours are delicious. Staff are courteous - pricing is in line with other ice cream and / or gelato shoppes around town. Great place to enjoy gelato whether it's summer or winter.
Beautiful sunny afternoon, we hit English bay today and got some spectacular Mondo Gelato. This is the best gelato in Vancouver, I dont know if they buy it or make it themselves, but it is way better than other gelato places. I keep it simple and get chocolate and vanilla, boring you say? No Way. This stuff must be like 50% fat or something, how can it taste so rich, and be so velvetty!! Service and ambiance is pretty standard, but who cares, thats not what Im here for!! Just give me my Gelato!!!!
There's usually a huge line-up that spills in front of Banana Leaf (next door) during the summer. Besides its great quality, Mondo Gelato has an abundance of unique flavours that you can't find anywhere else. Can't decide which flavour to get? Not a problem. You can get two scoops for the price of one -- something that the other places on Denman don't offer. Thus, you can be rest assured that your dessert won't be all gone by the time you reach English Bay (I've tried it in 30C weather).
As for the decor: it would be nice if they had more seating, because it gets really cramped in there.
Mondo is definitely the best gelato/ice cream place in town. Some places only allow you two flavours for a small ice cream but Mondo gives you two. Their ferrero rocher flavour is awesome and I especially love their fruit flavours, especially in the summertime. There's usually a line-up but it's definitely worth the wait. Yum!
First of all, matchalatte is completely wrong when it comes to "You can get two scoops for the price of one -- something that the other places on Denman don't offer." As of today, ALL of the gelato places on Denman offer two flavours for the basic price.
Anyway, there are four gelato places on denman, and this one is definitely over-rated! There's simply no reason for 15+ people waiting in line to get their fix. All of the other three places on denman offer indistinguishably good gelato. Yes, they have a great variety of funky flavours, but if you're the type that like to play it safe but don't like to wait in line with indecisive people, try somewhere else.
I must hit the Mondo jackpot the last few times I visit the store... the service was only ok. The place looks dirty and smelly, dont know why.
I remembered the place used to be clean and tidy and the gelato were always great.
What happened to this gelato place?? I LOVED Mondo.... However, the gelato I had recently were soft and gummy?? no taste. Maybe be they were not busy in these wintery days so the gelato just keep sitting in the freezer day after day? I just dont know and felt very disappointed!
I am an ice cream fanatic. Read reviews and had to try this ice cream. Well to make it short service was bad, ice cream over priced, and really had no taste. I am not sure if it was a bad day or this is normal may not give them a second chance. I actually threw the rest of my ice cream away because I wasnt enjoying it.
This is undoubtedly the best place for gelato in the West End. There is often a large lineup there, but there is a reason for that. The flavors are sharp and concise. Often with gelato shops (but not this one), you get flavors that are too milky and muted, like ice cream. Gelato should have powerful flavors, undiluted by ice-cream milkiness. This shop offers the best. The grapefruit flavor is tangy and sharp. The chocolate flavors are like eating a creamy chocolate bar. Sure there are hit-and-miss weird flavors like "rose" that taste like soap, but some people like those, and it's all in the adventure!
The clerks are very good looking and always very pleasant and friendly. I am amazed at how well they keep smiling even when the place is packed! You can have unlimited samplings of the gelato. I think it's very generous of them. You get two-scoops when you order a "single" so you can sample two at once.
I would not waste my time going to another shop. One of the other shops recently went belly-up. Another one has insufficient freezer strength so the gelato is melting as it's served to you, and another competitor is inconsistently open, I assume it's about to close down.
As my best friend said once, "I've been to Italy and had lots of gelato there, but this is the best gelato I've ever had!"
i know costs has changed over time but the price for ice cream at this place compared to others are really high, especially for the portion that you get. Nothing out of the ordinary for the selection or flavours either. It was kinda dead when we went last night
there's a lot of other choices in downtown... i myself like mario gelato the best near terminal
