At Fujiya, their cooler is always packed with freshly made sushi and bento boxes for food on the run.
This place is great if you want some fast and tasty take-away. They have all the usual fresh rolls and some surprising sushi. Also a good selection of other Japanese foods. Plus they have 2 kinds of miso soup to enjoy. There is a small selection of grocery items and an awe inspiring selection of Japanese snack foods. AND it is all very, very cheap!
If you go there say 'hi' to Rika. She is super nice!
Fujiya is a pre-made, cooler stored/displayed, take-out sushi place... might sound like a big turn-off, but the food is not only good, it's REALLY good. It can't compare to a good sushi restaurant, but considering that all the food is made at their flagship location on Clark Drive and delivered to this downtown location, the quality is above and beyond! It's also inexpensive: I usually get 2 trays of maki (12 pieces of salmon maki, and 12 pieces of tuna maki) and it's only $2.95 per tray - basically fast food/McDonald's pricing, but a healthier alternative.
The selection does not stop at sushi (maki, rolls, nigiri, and sashimi); there are also a bunch of other cooked foods: rice bowls, bento boxes, Japanese sandwiches, gyozas, and more.
This place is smoking busy - but the line moves relatively quickly since it's just pick up and pay - during lunchtime as it gets traffic from the office workers around the downtown business core.
I highly recommend this place for a quick, satisfying, healthy, and inexpensive lunch.
This place has fresh sushi everyday. It’s a take-out but it’s better than most restaurants in the neighbourhood that offer sushi. It’s not expensive, the people at the cash are friendly and courteous even when there are long line-ups, especially at lunch time. They have good miso soup too. I love their yam tempura sushi. I do wish they had more choices for vegetarians.
Fujiya downtown is essential a Japanese corner store with prepared foods delivered daily so there's not much you can say about the Ambiance. The quality is good and the prices are generally much cheaper compared to other sushi outlets nearby.
One huge issue I have is with how the open everyday. The sign on the door says they open at 10:00 AM but you can get there at 10:45 and they have barely started to unload the prepared food from the containers. It always seems to be the case that the California rolls, kappa rolls, and tuna rolls are pulled out first so even then you have barely a choice.
2 out of 5 times i'll go in the store within the first 45 minutes of opening on my lunch break and have to leave empty handed because they just don't have the product out yet.
