Fritz serves European fries and poutines with lots of dip choices. Open late for the after bar snack.
I used to come here all the time after a night out on the town but no longer. The guy who runs the cash register is a real jerk who you'd think, considering he profits from drunk people, would have a lighter perspective and take things in stride. He does not and can be quite surly if you say the wrong thing. He has overreacted a couple times, once when I asked him where the funny bald guy went who has now been gone for a while. I guess its a touchy subject.
I am not sure what happened to the fries but the last time I had them they weren't cooked properly. They were basically inedible and I considered taking them back but didn't want to deal with you-know-who at the cash register. The place is generally very dirty with garbage strewn everywhere especially outside the shop. Needless to say I won't be back anytime soon.
I'm a vegetarian who unfortunately loves a good poutine from time to time. A friend of mine told me about this place and their veggie gravy so of course I had to try it - I hadn't had poutine in forever. It was surprisingly delicious! I wouldn't have been able to tell the gravy wasn't real gravy! It was very very good. The lady who was working didn't look particularly happy to be there, but she was pleasant none the less. I'd definitely recommend for late night snack after a night of hitting a bar or club. I'd definitely like to go back if I have a hankering for poutine!
I had this strange craving for fries, and decided to grab a small order of frites to go.
It was made to order, so it took a few minutes, but they were hot, crisp, and tasted like a good french fry should. Didnt get any of the european style mayo, but I probably should have.
Nothing fancy about the room. It's a frenchfry joint, and it's good at what it does.
I came here last night after a slice of pizza because i couldn't make up my mind on which. I was disappointed by neither.
I ordered a small fritz and a side of plain mayo dip. The fritz were hot and fresh and satisfying til the last fry. It was a little weird sitting in the restaurant though. They don't have table that you can sit around. Instead, they have benches with little bistro-type metal tables with several round holes to put your fritz cone and dip cone(s). So cute! But I did feel like I was sitting at a bus stop eating fries. European fritz is the way to go!
I've only ever ordered the poutine at this place. I don't know if it's the double-fried fries or the double layer of cheese and gravy but their poutine is simply the best. I routinely trek over the hill from my apartment in West End, a 40 minute walk, to satisfy my cravings. It's that good.
This review only pertains to late night cravings for ridiculously delicious fatty food due to entertainment or pure gastronomical desire. Get the poutine, though the extra large cone of fries is fun to walk down the street with. The toppings for the poutine are a nice addition, smoked meat was the best I've had so far (over bacon and one other I can't remember). Some of the sauces are good for diping -- I like zesty ketchups, so its nice to find a place that has some you dont have to craft yourself at the condiment bar. Do it once, and you can see for yourself -- Fritz is the place to go when you just need a hit...of fries, of course.
I've stopped by this place a couple times after work. The poutine is excellent, best I've had outside Quebec and better than most of the stuff you'll get in Montreal. Their regular fries are great too, freshly cooked with great dipping sauces.
I've been stopping by for years usually after being out downtown late night but have recently going earlier as a friend moved to the area. Perhaps there's an ownership change or something but my last vist was not pleasant - poor attention from staff/owners, cutomer area messy and in dire need of cleaning and perhaps updating and less attention to detail on preparing of meals. Their poutine which was once awesome was served luke warm with not enough gravy so the cheese was not even melted. Too bad another Vancouver favourite falling down. I won't be back again.
If you are hungry after a night out on Granville street forget the pizza places, and hit up Fritz. Fritz has UK style Chips with the best dipping sauces. I usually go for the Mango-Chutney or the honey mustard. They also make the best poutines ever!! And if you are a vegetarian like some of friends are, they even have a veggie gravy.
as a vegetarian (no dairy either) its kinda hard to get fed after late night boozing. pizza is out.
but these guys make the best fries ever! hand cut and timed in the fryer to make sure they are perfect. love all the dips...especially the mango chuty mayo and the garlic lovers. the gravy is mushroom instead of meat - yeay! just need ot bring in my own vegan cheese and i could have poutine again! there poutine is excellent i hear from friends.
a family run affair, if you treat them right you will be treated very well. they have had some staff trouble of late, but if its one of the familyyour service is amazing. they care about what they do and have a rather good sense of humour for folks who feed late night crowds every day.
they are open to at least 2:30 am ever night except monday - til 8pm.
they play cheesy radio tunes which i guiltily love.
no bathroom, but there is a great park with public bathroom across the street.
the ceilings are nice and high so you dont feel like you are hanging out in the deepfryer.
I wouldn´t quite call this place a European fry house. There´s Indonesian peanut sauce on the menu and poutine which is totally North American. And yes, I know why Indonesian peanut sauce is on the menu.
Still, if you haven´t experienced really really good fries... Belgian fries are the best... then this place is not so bad. I succumbed to the peanut sauce which was too full of black pepper but nice with the chunky peanuts in it. My bf had a poutine. His first. And have to say his last, especially if this is the best poutine in town. Must be an acquired taste.
In general, not bad if you have a craving for fries. On the other hand, if you have a craving for good fries, then well it´s ok.
An aside, I personally don´t like crispy fries but I do like the skins left on and the less greasiness.
And they are quite pricey for the fancy dips. Personally, I´d make my own or buy a bottle from the store.
Was looking forward to eating at Fritz again, as its been a few years. Sauces were okay, not spectacular. It appeared they used fresh cut potatoes, but unfortunately don't use a high quality oil or they tried to get an extra day too many before changing it. If your main focus is fries, you better make sure they're good.
I love poutines, even though I know they are just going to go staight to my gut. I used to go to Fritz often, especially after a night at the pubs. Well, the last time I went there, I got such bad service, I decided I shall never return.
The problem was with the bald guy there who wouldn't even look at me when I was trying to order. He gave me the coldest attitude I had ever seen. When I asked for a poutine with chicken on it, he just looked into space and said in a monotonous voice: "We're only making regular poutines tonight, sir." When I tried to make conversation by saying, "Oh, you are out of chicken tonight?" (I always get a chicken poutine) he said again "We're only making regular poutines tonight, sir." After trying to inquire about the status of the chicken one more time, and getting the same response, I just left. For some reason, he didn't seem to recognize me that night, even though he once knew me by name. Hmm... very bizarre. Anyway, I will never go back, and I'll never recommend it to anybody else.
