Poor experience in being ripped off.

I went here after work to get some dinner. I ordered the combo of soup and curry beef on rice. I never got my soup. Here is where the fun started. I got my beef and everything was fine for an asian cafe. I noticed my soup never came but the bill did. So I figured the server just rang in the food and not the combo. I was wrong. She wrang in two combos. I asked about it and she said there was nothing the restaurant could do to change it. So I end up paying more for soups that I never got. I enquired if there was a manager to speak to. I was assured that there was none. So I payed for the food, and told the girl that if she wanted a tip she could have my soups.

Never walked in before and can't decide whether it was a good idea...

Food: I didn't order food but my compadres did - a chicken cream pasta and deep fried chicken. The pasta was ok but the deep fried chicken was terrible - soggy and tasteless. I had to dunk it in hot sauce several times to make it edible. We all ordered drinks and they were tasty although overpriced. Mango stars were a treat with my special drink that had 4 different flavors (strawberry, lychee, peach, mango) but I can't remember what its called.

Service: Server kept giving me and another girl at the end of the table all of the food and drinks even though we had already received our drinks and were clearly eating/drinking already. It was as though she was too lazy to find out who ordered what.

Value: Overpriced in comparison to other HK places and drinks were expensive in comparison to other BB tea places but they do have drink mixes that no other BB tea place offers.

Ambiance: not bad. Seems quite clean but there was also a strange smell that wafted through the place periodically - like stinky tofu...

I may return just for the drinks but I wouldn't stay in - take out only and I recommend others to do that as well.

Good food

Although my Szechuan Chicken Set Meal, with rice, soup, and 2 tiny side dishes ($7.25) was only okay, my kids' Chicken & Dual Mushroom Chow Mein with soup was very good ($8.50).

This is my BIL's favourite hangout. He orders the Baked Sole Fillet for his twins every time (they're very small for their age) and they finish the whole thing almost every time - and they hardly ever eat much. My kids want to try this dish the next time we come here.

Gone downhill a bit...well except the prices

This place was pretty good before, but over the last few months the size of some of the dishes have gotten smaller and the prices have gone up. Last time I went there I ordered a baked fish over rice dish. The flavor was a little on the bland side. Service is always hit and miss here. I used to go here 3 times of month since it is so close by. Nowadays I go there once every 2 or 3 months if we are too lazy to cook or in a hurry

Flo Tea Room ... Chinese Fusion type place
By aquadl of Vancouver (39 Reviews)
Submitted Thursday, February 19, 2009 - 7:51am [Dine in]

Went there last night with the family. Place was about 25% full but over the course of the dinner, around 50% of the restaurant tables where occupied ... not bad for a Wednesday night. Each one of us ordered from the Dinner Set menu, which by the way comes with a bowl of Soup. We were served Corn Chowder this time, the last time I was here they had Borsht. Dinner came out fast and hot. Not too much MSG in the food, as we were not thristy afterwards. My Sole & Spinach was very good, big pieces of Sole and cremey cheese sauce was very tasty. We also ordered the Curry Beef(not too spicy), House Special Chow Mein, Seafood & Vegetables set and the portguese Chicken .. all were good according to the people who ordered them. Good food presentation also. Price was very reasonable at about $8.95 per plate. W/Cs were clean but a bit small. Total bill came out to $45 bucks for 4 adults and 2 kids. Thats not bad ... I like this place because the ambience is a lot better than places such a Glouschester or other same type of Chinese Noodle houses. Chair were comfortable, no chipped plates. Next time I am going to try the HOT Pot dinner Set ... looked pretty good ... since alot of other patrons ordered it. Only thing is that they only accepted Cash. ... but will definitely try this place for a third time ..

Had dinner with my Mom, daughter, niece and her son last night. Portions were a good size. We ordered House Special Chow Mein, which was delicious. Lots of crunchy and soft noodles. Plenty of topping too. Also had Pork Bones and Sweet Corn Hot Pot. Didn't look very appetizing but was really good! Lots of flavour. The third dish was a bit disappointing because it wasn't what we expected. It was the Seafood on Rice Baked with Cheese. Didn't see any cheese on top. Still, it had an OK taste to it. Also had bubble tea. Pricey for what you get. Would definitely go back and try some other dishes. Oh, the soup that came with the noodle and rice dish, was a cream of corn soup and that was delicious too. Not too much that it would fill you up.

HK Cafe with BBT
By gloriasit of vancouver (37 Reviews)
Submitted Monday, June 1, 2009 - 3:33am [Dine in]

Came here a few times with friends and we all thought this place resembles other HK cafe style restaurants. After a few tries, my boyfriend figured out that Flo should be owned by the original owners of Oscars cafe (Rupert and 22 avenue).

Service: A few times, the same server forgot our utensils when our food arrived. But as she passed by our tables she quickly remembered and came back with it. Friendly staff members.

Food: The usual HK cafe style. Their mini-set portions are smal --hence the name "mini". Although in comparison to other HK cafes with "mini-set" meals, they do lean on the smaller side. Their menu is quite large and is sure to have something for everyone. I don't agree with the previous review in regards to their bubble tea. I think their drinks are all-right. Bubble world definitely wins for the value, however, I do think that their pearls are a bit chewier and their teas are a little stronger.

Ambiance: Ordinary tables and booth style HK cafe, nothing special. Washrooms are somewhat clean. They provide free wireless on weekdays.

Will return!

Affordable Asian Fusion Restaurant
By Ziggyzag of Vancouver (2 Reviews)
Submitted Sunday, November 29, 2009 - 2:22pm [Dine in]

Flo's convenient location, large menu and affordable prices make it a great choice for someone looking for a quick bite to eat. Most of the waiters and waitresses are native speakers of either Mandarin or Cantonese and communication in English, beyond pointing or reading off an item on the menu can be difficult, but the staff are generally friendly and accommodating.

A large number of Flo's dishes are a fusion of Asian and Western dishes. All Entree's are served with a soup and portions are large. Service is not overbearing, and once you've flagged down a server to place your order and the order is served, the staff will generally leave you alone. While some patrons may desire more attention, I don't like being bothered while eating. Flo's set up where servers are there to take orders, clean tables and bring the bill suits my needs perfectly. My favorite dish on the menu is the Baked Portugese Chicken.

The time of placing an order to receiving it at you table normally takes normally takes 5 to 10 minutes. Affordable price and quick service make this an excellent choice for diners looking for an affordable quick but delicious dinner.

Flo: now with soapy bbtea!
By monmon of Vancouver, Canada (12 Reviews)
Submitted Thursday, July 24, 2008 - 12:06pm [Dine in]

The last time i went, it was so horrible that i've since refused to go back.

food: their snacks/food are pretty typical Taiwanese cuisine. I'd rather be eating at Pearl Castle.

drink: barely decent - they've got good portions, but the last time i've been there, i ordered a matcha green tea slush with red bean (it's a special drink with a name, but i don't remember what the name is). I've had this drink before here (and liked it), and I know what it's suppose to taste like. THIS particular one tasted like DISH DETERGENT. i noticed it on the first sip. yup, not Jasmine-taste (besides, it's not jasmine green tea, it's powder matcha!), but full-on soap. Ivory or Dove, you pick. YUCK

service: This is the real deal-breaker for me. The servers didn't understand english OR cantonese... And when i got my drink and discovered it taste like SOAP (i got my friend to confirm this), i waved down our waitress and told her about the taste. She said it's SUPPOSE TO TASTE like that!!! I told her, no, i've had this before, this is SOAP, what i had before isn't SOAP (done with elaborate hand motions, because again, she didn't understand english/canto (or is faking it)). She gives me a blank look, says oh, and goes get another waitress, who (thank god spoke SOME english) then tries to tell me that it's suppose to be like that! OMG! I proceeded to make them see that this was unacceptable and I suggested (!) that they make me another one. So she brings it back to the kitchen and in plain sight, the waitresses and drink maker/cook each passes around a spoon and proceeds to drink from my drink!! seriously people! won't you just believe me?? The drink that came back didn't taste like soap, good thing because I was this sure that they would just bring me back the same drink (after taste testing it!)...

overall: NOT recommended. An embarrassment to Vancouver's food reputation. I'm surely never going there again.

Ok food, but go to BubbleTea World for BBT
By franklovesfood of Richmond, BC (9 Reviews)
Submitted Saturday, March 7, 2009 - 12:37am [Dine in]

I actually liked their food, althought their price is a little above average tea house. I dont know if its personal preference but I think that their chef makes his rice alot better than noodles. Food comes pretty fast, but since this place normally gets quite busy at night, it'll be a good idea to order as quickly as possible. By the way it closes at 2am in the morninig.
Now, no offence to this restaurant, but seriously, if you want to get BBT, go next door to bubble tea world. BBT world is arguably one of the top BBT place in Vancouver/Richmond, not mentioning how cheap their drinks are. So just finish your meal at flo, then get your BBT next door at bubble tea world. P.S. The only "must not" get BBTs are greenapple and strawberry milk tea, they make them taste kinda weird ... but most of them are reallyy good !

I have been to Flo Tea Room so many times, my first time posting. I am very satisfied with my experiences there. I continue to go back because the food is incredible, the drinks are very unique and creative, the service, I find is excellent. I find my time there whenever I dine, a very enjoyable experience. I would recommend Flo Tea Room to people who want bang for their buck. Prices for food and drinks are very decent (in comparison to other BBT places, of course). If you haven't ordered the Baked Spaghetti, you need to try it. I enjoy the food, and everything about the restaurant. It is a valued addition to the Marpole Community!

Bland food but Cool Drinks
By foooood of Vancouver (4 Reviews)
Submitted Friday, January 9, 2009 - 11:37pm [Dine in]

I went to this place for a friend's birthday party so I didn't actually get to experience the service very well, from what I saw, the service was OK. I ordered an 8.00 dish and got a huge bowl of food. I order seafood rice with cheese. I also order a drink that was not a a soda type thing with mango stars (which a really cool). I got sick of the food within the first four bites of it. It was very tasteless and I couldn't finish what I ordered. What I did finish was the drink. It was very unique, I had never tried anything like it. There were other flavours but i had grapefruit and my friend had apple. The drink had two layers, one was a syrup and the other was a soda with mango stars at the bottom. And whipped cream on top to layer it all off. The drink was amazing.

Overall, I will probably go back there just for the drinks. Although the proportions are good and the ambiance is great. Its' really nice inside and it's pretty clean with a modern touch to the decor.

What a pleasant surprise

Submitted Thursday, October 16, 2008 - 7:55pm [Dine in]

There were 12 of us and we had reservations at another restaraunt, that when we got there, weren't able to accommodate us. Someone in the group had eaten at Flo before and suggested we go there as they had a large space and many big tables. I made a call and the lady on the phone said that they couldn't accommodate us right away, but they could in about 20 minutes. To me that was right away as we were 20 minutes away.

When we arrived, I was greeted by name and our table was all set for us. Immediately, I was impressed with the modern feel of the place and the impressive artwork on the walls.

We placed our orders and the food arrived very quickly. Unfortunately none of us spoke chinese so there was some communication problems with the waitress, but she was very courteous and pleasant. Three of our group were of Chinese descent, but they did not speak any unfortunately.

All of our orders came, I was surprised how quickly too. The cups and plates were also very modern. We had also tried many of their specialty bubble teas which were very tasty. There was one mix up with the drink order, but the staff corrected that right away and adjusted the bill accordingly.

I ordered the baked sole filet with spinach and rice. It was absolutely amazing. My boyfriend had the Beef Tenderloin and I loved that as well. The prices of everything are very reasonable and the portions are large. For 12 of us the whole bill only came to $120 and we all ate well.

Although the staff seemed very organized, I thought that they could have smiled more. We will be going there again tonight and I was looking up the address when I came across this site and thought of posting.

I like my food quite spicy, so I did find myself adding the spicy sauces to the meal.

Thank you very much to Flo staff for accommodating us so nicely on such short notice.

Servers that talk back

I logged on and saw someone submit a review for Flo. I can't agree more with what they said. I went there a few nights ago and this was my experience.

I went with my sis-in-law and ordered a few dishes of food, one of which was a Spicy Tofu, which is tofu tossed in thai chili sauce. The tofu came to the table and it's the Deep friend tofu with salt/pepper. So my sis told them that it's the wrong one. The waitress looked at her and walked away! we were so shocked.. did she not hear us? then we realized that she went to get another waitress and stood at our table debating what to do with it. um, rather unprofessional to go get back up, no? after debating amongst themselves in mandarin (which we didn't understand), our server told us that we had ordered this because we pointed to it. um, NO! we had looked her in the eye and said Spicy Tofu when we ordered, we had POINTED to the menu heading (snacks). then they debated amongst themselves again. finally, frustrated and feeling treated like childrens, my sis just said: what's the big deal, just go back and toss it in a wok with some sauce! and that's just what they came back with 10 minutes later....

How rude to stand there and talk in your own language, TWICE during that 10 minute interval. it is average priced with nice booths, but i'd rather spend my money somewhere else. i too, never did and never will go back.
