Long time, well known Chinese Restaurant. Famous for their dim sum.
I have been to the Flamingo for dim sum over the years, and the food is always top notch. My fiance and I decided to order take out, as its one of the closest (and reliable chinese food) to where we live. We ordered Beef Chow Fun, Prawn Chow Mein (crispy noodles), Chicken Lettuce Wrap, and some Wonton Soup. The lady answering the phone spoke perfect english (hooray..as sometimes it can be challenging ordering), and the wait was only 20 mins!
Upon receipt of the food, it was hot, fragrant and totally delicious. We will definitely be ordering from there again. I vote it as one of the best Chinese food places in the Marpole / Kerrisdale area.
Went here for a friend's gradulation in her new found career. The service was awesome. They were very friendly and prompt in asking for some hot water to warm up the baby bottles. I was a little concern when Ithe restaurant only had 5 other tables used. But that was soon overlooked when the food came out. The food was hot and fresh. From the peking duck wrapped in a wrapper along with hoisen sauce to deep fried prawns to the lobster and crab . The seafood was delicious. The fried rice and noodles was tasty and plentiful. The food was great. I was very impresses with their banquet style dinner. Parking was readiy available. I would recommend this restaurant to whomever wants a great chinese dinner.
Came here for 1 thing: Peking Duck. If you ask, they can make a soup that comes with the meal out of the bones, costs more but is worth it. Peking duck comes in 2 servings: the skin + white chip things (look like styrofoam), & the meat itself wrapped in lettuce. Very tasty.
For two people it turned out to be $40, but there were leftovers to take home. If it was 3 or 4 people with moderate appetites, then this would be a really good spot to go for authentic Peking Duck.
This is a great dimsum and dinner spot. Been coming here with the family and my clients for years.
Food is very good and consistent. Service and staff are very good [for a chinese restaurant] and make every effort to service the diner. This place has been around for years and many of the locals in the neighbourhood frequent this diner. Can't go wrong dining here - for locals and visitors alike.
A note: The Fraser St. Location is no longer open. It's been closed down for sometime now and looks like another rstaurant is opening up there.
Fine, I'm biased. I've been coming to this place all my life (27 years), and for good reason. There isn't a single better place to come day in and day out for anything from dim sum to hot and sour soup. Their lemon chicken is easily the best and most well thought out of the city. Most places envision lemon chicken as the Asian equivalent of fish and chips, and if you have a gluten sensitivity like I do, that ain't workin'. Fortunately, for $11, what you get is actually real chicken breast, lightly coated and pan fried with a reasonable lemon sauce, as opposed to that gelatinous gunk they try to give you at most places - and you get 2 full breasts of chicken. The other dishes vary, but by and large they're top tier.
For me though it's their Sunday dim sum that is the hero. Maybe I just like 9/10 of my items to be served hot, but maybe that's just me. These guys have you covered, and aren't too heavy on either the fried stuff or the steamed stuff.
Most of all, and this is going to delight and turn off some, this isn't a greasy spoon. What you're getting is highly authentic, but I seem to remember a chop suey dish for those inclined. And I've probably been hitting on the same cute, helpful waitress for the last 27 years, and she still hasn't aged. Maybe that's too personal, but some places give you that feeling of home, whether you've been there all your life or not.
My friend and I have been here many times for the dim-sum. Today when we went I was glad that the place was quite full compared to the time when the Canada line construction was disrupting many of the businesses.
This is a place where we know we'll get seated right away, have carts coming at us at a good pace, get a good selection and quality of dim sum. It isn't the best nor the cleanest place but it's a comfortable place. They don't try to rush you out the door - we often end up staying longer than most.
Was there for a birthday dinner and had 2 tables reserved. They had a little room made for us in the back of the resturant which was ok, but they were pushing the dirty unwashed dishes from the dining area into our room and into another door opening that problably leads into the kitchen!
The food was not up to my standards, the vegetables they served us was hard to chew. the crispy chicken was dry and submerged into soysauce! I have never seen it submerged in soy sauce anywhere and tasted awful.
I'm not sure if this is the same Flamingo resturant that used to be on Fraser and Kingsway, but if so then like the other thread, Flamingo has gone downhill.
The food is not very good. The waiters didn't communicate with the customers very well
and each time I come here there are fewer and fewer asian people.
I asked for one tall glass of water and they asked if we would like two. My friend didn't want one so we said no. They came back with two short glasses.
Over all I would not recommend this restaurant. There are so many good dim-sum restaurants in Vancouver.
We had dim sum with family here on Saturday.
The dim sum was decent. They do not seem to have as much variety as their restaurant on Fraser. Portions were also smaller.
We asked for more hot water for the tea and after 20 minutes we had to ask what happened to the teapot.
I think they may be a bit more expensive that the restaurant on Fraser as well. We only had 9 dishes and the bill was $37.00 with tax. We did not have any of the more expensive items like rice roll, chicken over rice etc. so the bill seemed a bit on the high side for what we had. After all this is not a fancy restaurant.
I'd rather go to the Fraser Flamingo
I have been going to this restaurant for probably 20 years. Used to go there for dim sum quite frequently when I lived in Vancouver.
Started going back there again early last year. Went last week after two weeks out of country. Partner and I were craving Dim Sum and no one but Flamingo was going to be good enough.
We ordered not just one, but two orders of chicken feet. Their's is the best. Deep fried squid is unbelievably crisp and tasty. Excellent shrimp dumplings as well as spare ribs and bean curd rolls. Lo bak cake is very good as well. Ordered their black pepper chow mein which is not a super commonly found flavour and they do a great job.
As long as they continue to be this good, we will continue to go there again and again.
