So dissapointed, making this the last time to fish on rice.

I used to be such a proponent of the Fish on Rice in Burnaby. I went with a friend to this location, and have now been turned off.
We were the only table in the place.Literally.
Submitted our first order sheet, half of which was never broght to the table. Now,this seems to be a common practice with AYCE places, but its getting a bit rediculous.
We were the only 2 people in the room!!
Whats the point of having order sheets, when you have to ask the waitress for everything anyways??
The Tuna tataki and spicy tuna sashimi was quite good, but everything else was kind of so-so.
Anything deep fried smelled of old oil,and the rolls were bland.Getting the boot at 9pm was kind of lame too.
looks like its a longer drive to Toyama from now on.

Tried it for lunch

I was in the area when I decided to try this AYCE sushi for lunch. It was around 1pm, not too busy, service was fast & friendly.
I liked the chicken teriyaki dish, I like the taste & was large in size. I tried the avacado & California Roll, which came quickly with my meal. I found the avacado roll wasn't all that great tasting, and the california roll lack flavour.
I've been spoiled by another AYCE in North Van for less money & bigger selection. Plus the price in North Van is lower than Fish On Rice, if you're in the area for lunch, its a place I would say try it at least once.

I am not coming back!

Probably the worse all you can eat sushi restaurant I have had and the price was atrocious.

With the HST, dinner without tip came to almost $50 for two and this was for sushi quality that was quite poor. Indeed, the dinner was even worse than Robson Sushi (which doesn't say too much) which at least only charges $15 per person.

The oyster motayaki was terribly greasy and the oysters were not fresh (they had a very strong flavour and were tough). The tempura batter was far too thick and greasy. The vegetable tempura consisted of the cheapest: squash. There were no brocolli or carrot tempura that I could find.

The visa machine needs to be watched as well when you leave a tip on the credit card meal. The option is 15% or leave your own. If you leave 15% they will calculate it on the price of the meal PLUS the 12% HST bringing the cost to up even more.

I realize that $20 per person is the going rate for HIGH QUALITY all you can eat sushi in Vancouver but this definitely was not in the category of say Shabusun.

All in all, it was a meal to regret.

Japanese restaurant on Broadway

I picked up this beaut and she wanted to have sushi coz its her favourite food so we went to the Fish On Rice (get it?) for Japanese food and it was very fast (great coz we wanted to be in and out fast) and quite fresh (they were busy so you know they have fresh fish). The girl I was with loved it and was very happy and I was happy with some Temperic Fish (glazed with batter like with shrimp). The whole bill came to $36. Fantastic.

The fish stinks about as bad as the service - go somewhere else.

Generally, the sashimi portions are tiny and poor quality. Food appears at the table way to quickly to be fresh. We were seated and 3 minuted later most of our food arrived. The rolls are messy, presentation is sloppy and the decor badly needs a facelift.Even the stairs up to the restaurant is filthy and patrons are greated at the main entrance by a dirty bucket, perhaps for cigarette buts. After last night, I will not be going back.

The all you can eat option is not good value when the food is not edible or leaves you feeling sick after. The sushi chef (if you can call him that) tried to explain the fish was fresh, but the color, texture and smell told a different story.

Generally, the quality of all you can eat sushi now sucks in Vancouver. Frankly, it is no suprise the Shabusen in South Granville closed down recently. The neighbourhood will be better off if Fish on Rice were to follow suit and close their doors. Waste of time and money.

When Fish on Rice opened, my husband used to go once a week for Sushi. We moved out of the neighborhood 4 months ago and thought since we hadn't been back in awhile we would go for Happy Hour. What a gong show. We were seated and ordered our food. Within 5 minutes we had almost everything on the table that we ordered, which tells me it wasn't fresh and it didn't taste that way either. The waitresses were brutal! the restaurant was virtually empty and they ignored us completely unless we called them over. My husband had to ask for something 3 times before he finally got it. The kicker was when we were paying. I was handed my change and told that the tip wasn't included in the bill. I though that was a strange thing to say so I ignored it. As I'm putting my change in my wallet she asks me if anything was wrong with her meal. Not wanting to get into it I said no and started zipping up my purse. She then told me again that the tip wasn't included with the meal, this time in a much stronger tone. I was so offended by her tone and the fact she was asking that I reminded her that a tip is not required especially when the service and the meal was so terrible. We left right away. I have never been to a restaurant before where a server has pretty much demanded a tip from me. My suggestion is to stay away from the poor service you will receive here.

Yummy AYCE!!
By ILOVE2EAT of East Vancouver (62 Reviews)
Submitted Friday, May 15, 2009 - 11:44pm [Dine in]

The food was pretty good. It came fairly fast too.
$22.95 for each adult and $12.95 for each child. (AYCE is $1.00 less Monday to Thursday.) Large bottle of Sapporo beer was $9.95.
Food came to our table within 10 minutes of ordering. We didn't get everything that we ordered the first time around, but we just ordered it the next time.
Dessert was a great size as you only get a small cube of mango pudding or jello and three rolls of the red bean spring rolls. If I wasn't so full, I would have had more!!!
Value is pretty good. Lots of variety - sashimi (no limit!), lots of assorted sushi rolls, different types of teriyaki dishes (beef, chicken, salmon, steak, vegetarian), udon dishes, rice dishes, tempura (PRAWNS!!! SCALLOPS!!! and of course, the vegetables!!!) robata dishes. Hot and cold appetizers - so the value is pretty good. The only thing is the Edamme beans comes cold!! And I like them hot.
We had a small cube deep freezer next to our table so . . .
We tend to avoid AYCE because we would overeat. We are soooo stuffed. But this place is pretty good. I would go back!

pricer mediocre japanese AYCE
By alpha_dog of richmond (61 Reviews)
Submitted Saturday, June 6, 2009 - 10:32am [Dine in]

came here with a friend to try their AYCE menu and wasnt impressed with the quality of the food.
their sushi rolls are quite small and are nothing spectacular (yes, size is not a factor in this situation because one has unlimited orders but it was something that i wanted to mention). i have to point out that their salmon sashimi was terrible: not fresh, not tasty and not moist. i have to order my salmon any time i visit a japanese restaurant and their salmon alone discourages me from wanting to return here. on a positive note, their AYCE menu is quite extensive so there is no shortage of different items that one can order.
service is inconsistent. i had one waitress who clearly did not want to be working there and came reguarly without even saying a word however there was another waitress who was cheerful and friendly when it came to taking our orders and filling our cups.
in terms of value, it would be much better to visit here during their happy hours but i was not able to make it during those time which meant that it came out to roughly $22 per person as opposed to $15 which is more realistic.
the layout of the restaurant was nice and i felt the environment was relaxing enough to somewhat enjoy this experience. there was a tv next to me so i could watch while i eat.
overall, the biggest turn off was their poor (and i stress poor salmon sashimi). i suppose i would come back here but only during happy hours and if i was starving with no where else to eat.

Don't go there!

Please don't waste your time and cash going here. Food is bordering on ok, but staff, particularly the female server (there appeared to be only one) are SO rude.

We went up to pay, and had left a tip on the table. We paid our bill, and proceeded to leave, and the waitress (who was not actually even our server) came up to us and said "Tip is NOT included in bill!"
Rude, rude, rude!

There are better Jap buffets around with much more pleasant staff.

I've been to this sushi restaurant a few time since I live in the neighborhood. Every time I go there, I say to myself, what a mistake again. The worst thing about this place for me is the quality of sushi. Vancouver has a good variety when it comes to the sushi quality and this place is definitely on lower end of the scale. Wild salmon is not even on the menu. Everything on the menu is cheap sushi, this restaurant has nothing to offer if you want something more exciting. I could tolerate the mediocre service and ambiance but I think because of the food I will stop coming there.

As an alternative for good sushi, I would recommend Temaki Sushi, which is not too far away on West Broadway. You will get fresh yummy fish and reasonably priced too.

Second time (and last time) back
By hungryfordinner of Vancouver (117 Reviews)
Submitted Friday, March 20, 2009 - 3:49pm [Dine in]

My first review of this restaurant reflects the DINNER all you can eat. This one is a review of the LUNCH all you can eat.

Food: The 6 pieces of sashimi limit per person were sliced SO small. They were about 3 cm by 1cm in size. The oyster motoyaki tasted really bland...the oysters weren't even on oyster shells...The chopped scallop cone tasted good, but lacked scallops. I would recommend the shitake mushroom roll, really delicious. We ordered 2 orders of saba nigiri. The first time it came, it was tasty. The second order came with saba that looked bruised, and not very fresh at all.

Service: The majority of the waiters/waitresses were really nice, but there was this female waitress who has no idea how to treat customers. She has a really bad attitude and a really loud voice.

Value: I'd rather go to Kingsway Sushi, even though it's a dollar more, the quality of the sushi there is a lot better.

Ambiance: We were seated to a table that had one of those dividing screens. I would recommed the screens to be made a little larger- I do not want to hear all the details of the other groups' conversations.

I don't think I'll be back..

Not the Best, but better than most

This has been one of the better japanese AYCE places. A pretty wide selection and it includes a soft drink.

I think the services is not bad. Waitresses there could maybe have a small smile or two. They did miss a few orders, but that is quite commom with AYCE places with their check list. Not too sure if this place is owned by chinese people, but their waiters and waitresses all spoke chinese to each other.

The value is not cheap, but pretty economical for a big selection, with the robata, sushi and sashimi and dessert.

The place looked pretty clean for an asian restaurant.

Good meal but high chairs needed!

Tried this new restaurant for the first time for a Saturday lunch. The AYCE menu ($11.95) is large but we just ate the sushi/sashimi. It was fresh and nicely presented and the servers were friendly which is rare in most similar joints (must I work here?). The meal was above average but we and several other families with infants were surprised there were no high chairs. Our server told me they were asked for them every day and the management had so far ignored the requests. Try eating sushi with a one year old on your lap! We were assured, however, that the next time we came there would be high chairs. We'll see.

A Pleasant Experience
By bubblejumm of Richmond , BC (10 Reviews)
Submitted Friday, February 4, 2011 - 1:22am [Dine in]

Tonight, two non-pregnant women (me and my bff) were craving for some AYCE sushi.

After a random encounter/help from a man who works at a corner store, we decided to go to 1414 W. Broadway St. to satisfy our cravings. There we decided to check out Fish On Rice.

The food itself was pretty good. They had really great portions, and were presentable. Although I've had fresher sushi (*ahem* Jumbo Sushi in Richmond), the food at F.O.R. was very satisfying.

The service was what made the experience really pleasant. I'm so used to being treated poorly at sushi restaurants, that my expectations have gone down. But at F.O.R., I actually felt like the server(s) did what they were supposed to do...which is simply serve the customers. I felt like they were there for us whenever we needed them, and made sure that our water and tea were refilled as necessary. They took away the dirty dishes, in a way that was not distracting. The servers worked together in serving our table, and never told us that it was "someone else's table". I really felt like they worked as a team. I'm very happy about this. And with great service, comes happy customers = well-deserved tip!

As for the value, it wasn't the $15 weekday AYCE I expected, but because I was happy with the service and the food, I didn't mind paying more. It's all about the good experience, right?

The ambiance was not that special...it was fine. Typical Japanese restaurant.

Overall, I say YES, go ahead and try it :)

Plesantly Suprised

I was in Calgary last weekend and had some pretty sad AYCE sushi, and started to crave the good old Vancouver standby.

Food- It was actually pretty good. Way better than the Burnaby location. All our hot dishes were hot, and all the rolls were fresh. Small portions but that's the AYCE standard.

Service- Holy crap, I was amazed. So different from the Burnaby resturant. Not only did we get ALL the food we ordered, but it came out quick and with a smile. Servers didn't let our order slips sit on the table for more than a minute or two, and they actually did quality checks! drinks were always filled, questions answered, can't complain.

Value- On this particular day I did eat more than $15 worth of food, but usually I don't. If you just want sushi then go somewhere else as the AYCE is overpriced, but if you want a lot of variety and it's your only meal of the day then it's worth it.

Ambiance- It's a nice room. Lots of light, nicely decorated etc. What lost a star for me is the plasma TV's with UFC on. If it was sumo wrestling then maybe they could get away with it but ultimate fighting... c'mon it's not a bar.

overall a pretty good place for AYCE. If you're not getting the happy hour or lunch deal then it's a bit pricey.

Good for AYCE

We went for lunch today and tried AYCE. The food came quickly and service was good. The food was decent quality. The place was not very busy. We tried many items on the menu and all were good. You also get free pop with your meal but we just had tea as pop does not go well with japanese food. Saki would be good. I would go back to this restaurant.

The servers were really friendly and were quick to get us our meal. Shashmi was good quality also.

Good all you can eat for 20.95

After reading all the great reviews at this site, I really wanted to try this restaurant out. The vegetarian in our party was not allowed to order off the menu, and instead had to order the same all you can eat sushi as the rest of our party. He was disappointed by this, but then the server Forrest really took care of him making sure he had everything vegetarian off the menu, and in the end he was pleased. I don't like the policy of forcing everyone at the table to order the same thing.

Anyway -- about the food! We found the quality of the sashimi and sushi to be excellent, on par with some of the best I have ever had. This makes up for everything else, the rolls and some of the cooked food left something to be desired, although the chicken kaarage was delicious. The sauce they use for spicy tuna rolls or things like that is sickeningly sweet, not spicy at all, and very bad tasting. We got our cooked food first, then rolls, then sushi, THEN sashimi when we were already full. If I had to do it again, I would order just sashimi first, then do a second order with everything else. Also the menus don't have much or any description of what the items are, so brush up on your sushi language before you go! Overall, an OK experience, but I will definitely be back, and with a new ordering plan (and knowing what to avoid) I think it will be much better next time.

my new favourite AYCE. Amazing value.

This place has to compete with Shin-Ju (mediocre) Tomokazu (good) and Shabusen (good).

They are quite a contender!!!

Free unlimited soda for those who need something fizzy to wash it all down.

beautiful and generous portions of sashimi

Good kitchen items, and a good selection of robata.

warning: things are bigger than other ayce joints so do order with care, the rolls are like burritos and the teriaky is a large size. You might be overwhelmed with the amount of food that comes to your table.

some more pluses: lunch menu includes more nice salmon dishes (salmon belly, salmon cheek, salmon tempura) and good selection of meats (beef ribs, meatballs along with the usual lunch spread).

Also a range of different sunomonos and both regular and spicy agedashi tofu.

Avoid noodle dishes.

Amazing place, my new spot for AYCE!

Good AYCE lunch
By panda of Burnaby (56 Reviews)
Submitted Saturday, March 8, 2008 - 2:14pm [Dine in]

My friends and I went for AYCE lunch on Fri. There was a 10% grand opening special. The ambiance was much nicer than the other Fish on Rice on Kingsway, & much cleaner. This place has the best motoyaki compare to other AYCE places. The ika kaarage was pathetic... way too overfried. Overall, the food was good, and all the meats was fresh and tender. By the second round, service was dwindling, food was forgotten. At the same time, the restaurant was getting so busy as it was lunch hour rush. I think it has become a common practice for AYCE places, probably did that on purpose so food don't go a waste. After complaining about our missing food, they were pretty quick about bringing our food. This is a good place for all you can eat, but I don't know if I want to drive all the way down here. Parking is a pain, I didn't like the fact I had to put more $$ in the meter in the middle of eating.

service was horrible and the manager got mad at us for not tipping. I usually do not tip if its not derserving. And this place has an unusual smell when coming in, much like garbage.
