i moved here recently this past november and found this joint in the corner of the building. Its been a staple ever since and its on the way to work so its such a bonus. I grab a quick bite and always go with the chicken shwarma. Strongly recommended!!! Never had a a bad one... nicely wrapped jsut grab and go. They recently just repainted the place and i missed them so much for that week they were closed. But now business as usual and im back on my daily routine =)
always pass by here when i on the way to the beach or back...there are a lot more choices now than before on this Denman avenue, but i always go here for the chicken shwarma.. best zest in town... always full and never skimps out on your meal.. thnx Sam!!!
I absolutely love this place! I first discovered it through a friend who took me there y ears ago. I always have the chicken shawarma wrap...it's absolutely SUPERB!
The restaurant is very tiny (the only seating is approx 6 barstools by the window). I suggest (on a warm day) take your order to go & head down to English Bays...it's only steps away!
This little place on Denman is great for a quick meal or for take-out. Usually get the Chicken Shawarma plate and have not been disappointed. Generous portion of Chicken Shwarma piled on flavored rice topped with a garlic sauce comes with Tabouli, Hummus and pita all for around $7.00.
Great value but the place does get really packed on weekends and during lunch so we usually just get it to go if there are no spots to sit on the patio chairs outside.
Can't go wrong for the price and the food is certainly much, much better than the fast food chain options for the same price.
What distinguishes this falafel place from the many others in town is that here they make truly great falafel, all the time. Most others, I find, offer dry mealy falafel. Or, they cover up their falafel with sauces or gimmickry like toasted panini bread etc. Not here. Everytime I eat here I get excellent falafel sandwiches. This may not sound like something to get worked up over, however, simple foods done right can be sublime (especially after having just walked around the Sea Wall). I like to imagine that this is what the falafel connaisseurs in Beirut chow down on.
Also vies for best lunch and best dinner. Very tasty chicken shareafjavqwaha (spelling?) at a decent price. Drinks are a bit steep in comparison. I think the owner employs unfair business tactics, the scent covers an entire block and draws customers away from other restaurants..
For value, I would recommend any of the "plates" above the sandwiches themselves. The falafel sandwiches are a little plain... just iceberg luttuce, tomato, and the patties. Not very filling.
The "plates" on the other hand, for around $6-8, are a great value. I find you can make roughly 2-3 wraps worth with the portions, and it also includes cucumbers in the salad, which is a bonus for me as it's not included on the regular sandwiches for some crazy reason!
The chicken is very tasty and well done but the beef no so. I've got great services and very poor ones, so it all depends on the time and day you walk in. A great place for a quick meal. Do not order their fruit smoothies. They are absolutely aweful.
I had the best chicken shawarma plate (complete with hummus & tabouleh) that I can remember, in all of Vancouver. Good value for about $7.00 after taxes, and the chicken was pretty good. I would recommend the plate over the wrap (you get more for your money).
I really liked the hummus. It was light, not too salty, and was just the right thing to go along with the meal.
I will definitely be going back again.
Have been going to Falafel King on Denman for a few years now, it's my preferred spot to grab a quick bite. My fave is the falafel plate which comes with a good portion of hummus, falafel balls, pita and tossed salad. They have the best dressing, I wish they sold it by the bottle. The staff is always friendly and service is quick, I usually get mine to go and either take it home or walk down to the beach and find a bench in the sun. They also make terrific tabbouleh.
i'll admit- i made a mistake and ordered the falafel, thinking that since they were the "king" of all falafel it must be royally delicous. it was a medicore mistake- the falafel was dry and lacked spicy, tangy sauce or hummus. the iceberg lettuce and tomatoe didn't contribute much flavour either.
the chicken shwarma bites i stole from my boyfriend, however were delicious. nicely cooked chicken, no fatty bits and scrumptious sauce. if i had royal anointing powers i would name this place Shwarma King and eat there everyday.
i'll definately go back, only next time i'll be all over the chicken shwarma.
Went on a Fireworks night as had seen all the positive reviews. Ended up with a premade Chicken Shwarma (not prepared I had ordered it) that was so dry; it didn't seem to have any garlic sauce or hot sauce. The chicken portion was really skimpy and I bit into piece of rubbery cartilage which put me right off! Won't be rushing back. I guess they were cashing in on the fireworks crowd.
Been there a couple of times for a quick meal. Usually I order take out, as they almost don’t have any seats. Besides, English Bay is just a couple of blocks away!
The chicken items (the shawarma wrap or plate) are quite tasty but the beef are a bit dry. If they are not too busy, ask them to cut the chicken from the spit! Service is mixed. If they are too busy, it is total chaos, as you are not sure which queue is for ordering and which is for picking up the orders. Otherwise, you can be in and out in less than five minutes (take out, of course).
One catch of this place is the amount of salt they put on the soups or meats. You might feel really thirsty after finishing one of the wraps or plates.
With a name like Falafel King, I walked in to the restaurant with high expectations. With quite a large mountain of cooked falafels staring at me from behind the counter, I had to order a falafel sandwhich. Unfortunately, the King didn't have any pickled turnips which is the adds perfectly to the taste and texture of the sandwich. I was there with two friends, one got the lamb donair and the other the chicken shawarma. The 'lamb' is of the pressed meat variety but the chicken shawarma turned out to be a hit.
Hmmmm- maybe I should have tried the shwarma.
I had a felafel sandwich, and it was ok, but not outstanding. I am used to places in other cities that offer an array of pickled peppers, veggies- and this was lettuce, tahini and hot sauce, c'est tout. The other bummer was that they microwaved the pre-made felafel balls, rendering them kind of soggy.
I did witness those shwarma-plates... i think i'll try those next time
Pricewise, it is great value for West End.
food: despite other reviews warnings had the beef shawarma. Great, perfect amount of tahini, moisture and not dry. Can't wait to try the chicken. My company, Goat Cheese, however had a falafel so terribly dry, the juice from my dish was used to moisten it Goat cheese was upset to say the least.
price: good price for the quality of food. spent roughly 5,50 on my beef shawarma and moderately full.
decor/styling- too cramped against the glass to notice. Limited seating, either pressed against the wall or outside
service: everything is self service and I did a good job.
This place has awesome food, great for fast food take-away. I live near the King and the aroma that wafts out of there is enough to bring you back many times a week. Portions are large and very inexpensive. Service is always very congenial as well.
