Fresh westcoast cuisine and cocktails.
Loved it as Soma. Now, not so much. The wine pours were skimpy. I ordered the beet salad (without the blueberry dressing) and it was room temperature and mealy because of the overcooked potatoes.Disgusting and my friend agreed. Sent it back (no one asked how the food was) and got the roasted veg. pizza instead. Better, but a bit greasy for thin crust, but the flavours were good. Always had to ask a server when we wanted more drinks, not the other way around. The atmosphere was good-busy, nicely lit, but there was no hot water in the ladies room!!! Isn't that a health code violation? Won't be back.
I gave this place a great review, some months ago.. well scratch that, because the service this time was so bad, I dont' know if I'll ever go back.
We were there early, the place was almost empty. Still, we waited forever just to order drinks... and even then, we had to flag the waitress down. The drinks took forever. Then we ordered our food... which took about 40-50 minutes, maybe more. Every time we wanted something - another drink, the dessert menu - we had to try to find the waitress (and they both had very little to do, with the place still being half empty) and flag them down. Ordered dessert and it took so long (30 minutes for dessert???) that we ended up cancelling it.
We complained, so the chef came out to explain that they have no microwaves, that everything is made from scratch. I certainly hope a restaurant doesn't use microwaves! - that's a lame excuse for poor service and SLOW food, all around. Then he tried to blame it on our attitude! Look, if your service is bad, acknowledge it; DO NOT try to blame it on the customer.
The food was OK, but overall the poor service really killed the night. The only time servers ever appeared was to refill our water - strange, as we were prepared to spend money on food and drink! Don't know if I'll ever go back here.
Wow. When I read a previous review I was excited and planned for twelve friends to go to this new spot. It was a big disappointment. So disappointing that I am writing a negative review for the first time, ever. I won't go so far as rating below 2 though, because I think it has great potential.
The first bad sign was the fact that the TV over the bar was on during the dinner seating, and that they were playing The Wedding Crashers. When it ended they played the DVD menu screen for about an hour, before the replayed the movie. Lame. The space is so nice that I was surprised they would cheapen it like that.
The music was all over the place. Music should really be curated to fit the impression a restaurant is going for. The music did not match the nice space and stylish branding.
When one person ordered a classic gin martini it came without olives. Odd.
The food was, well, not good. Cheap. The pizza was thick and doughy. The Margarita pizza had one piece of basil on it even though that was listed as one of the main ingredients. The ceviche was very over done. Too bad we ordered three orders of it. No one was very thrilled with their food.
The place felt like it was run by teenagers.
A few good things: The server was great, the space is excellent, pretty good bathrooms (but not maintained through the evening). Lots of potential. But they shouldn't play the TV unless there is a good reason — it brings the level of the place down. Maybe that's what they are going for, and I had overly high expectations.
For a place just off Main it should have been packed, and could be if they raised the level of food and paid a little attention to some ambiance details.
What a great little addition to the Main Street restaurant scene. I went to 8 1/2 for dinner last night after reading a review and I was very impressed. We sat at the bar, and the server was sweet, attentive, and very "real". She seemed genuinely interested in our thoughts. I was very impressed with the wine list, nice glass of Grey Monk was only $5.50, and it was a decent pour! Food was fantastic: fresh flavours, healthy, and very reasonably priced. Some interesting items on the menu that aren't on every other menu in Vancouver too.
The restaurant is still very new and has not completed the decor (art not up yet), but overall it was a cosy little place that I will definitely return to again and again!
