Don Francesco offers their customers the finest in Italian cuisine prepared with a Mediterranean flair and served in a warm and inviting atmosphere.
me and my group of friends went here for dineout vancouver 2008. Overall, I think their menu should be worth 25 instead of 35. The entree was very ordinary, nothing special. The appetizer was ..meh. but their tiramisu was very good...actually it was probably the best tiramisu I've ever tasted (I like it to be super bitter with strong wine/kaluha taste). The service was not great, I guess it's because there are too many people. I probably wouldn't come here again even for regular dining.
I went during the Dine out event. It was a bit of a disappointment. The head waiter keeps rushing us to order, then goes off and chats with another table. When asked for suggestions, he basically said everything was good. Great help. He did suggest the pasta for appetizer which turned out good. For entree, I had the veal which was a bit dry in parts. All 3 desserts were good, but service got worse. I asked for Earl Grey tea and he forgot about it. So 10 minutes later we asked to cancel it, but he said it's "ready." So he quickly made it and served it to us (Service station was directly beside us, we can see him making it). Then it turns out he gave us the wrong tea. When I asked him about it, he took some empty bags of the right one and lied about it. Suffice to say, I will not be going back to this place.
The seafood linguine was amazing, the west coast salmon plate we order was simple great as well, with great food, great music!! and great company, my wife is very picky with food and anywhere we go, so for her to like this place is a HUGE plus! We were left wanting to come back for more... :-)
My friends took me here for my birthday for Dine Out Vancouver, it was a wonderful experience.
The staff was warm and kind, we even got greeted by the restaurant owner (which is a first)! The portions were rather large which is something that normally lacks at traditional italian restaurants.
They only mixed up one of our orders but the waiter seemed sincerely sorry and even offered us creme brule as a apology! The waiters are all very nice and hospitable. The only thing I would warn is that the menu online is cheaper than the actual menu in the restaurant (maybe because it was dine out time).
At the end they brought a Tiramisu cake with "Happy Birthday" written in chocolate (I even got serenaded by the waiters!)
Overall I left well fed and extremely satisfied :) I would recommend this restaurant for anyone who has a special occasion.
I know a lot of people enjoyed the meal and service. Truth is, there are better ones out there. With four years of massive dine out experience (average 5 $35~$38 restaurants with three selections and I order all three), I am able and qualified to tell you that. I know I’m not expert and everyone has own taste, but it isn’t so hard to differentiate a good service and bad service. Today I dine there and what I got is attitude instead of welcome smile. I don’t feel myself as a customer, but a beggar who receive everything under their mercy. I saw Francesco walking in and out to help customers but the server I got is just full of himself. The food is just OK. The wine should be above average but my mood is totally destroyed by the poor service.
Good review is always nice and easy to write, but bad ones are really the one you should rely on. I know there are always bad apple in any single restaurant, but this, is just surprisingly BAD!!! Maybe the location is too good that they don’t need to work on quality and service to impress customer.
I have had the pleasure of dining at Francesco's Ristorante for a couple of years now. Every time, you ask me where do I want to eat? This is the place.
It is an absolute perfect restaurant if you are looking to impress on a first date, anniversary, birthday, proposal... or just a great night out. Perfectly located, staff & food always and consistently excellent.
Yes, it is pricey, and it is worth every penny of it! If you are really lucky, you may even get to hear the famous Francesco sing a breath-taking operatic tenor solo, in Italian of course.
Its rated one of the best restaurants in Vancouver, and there's a reason for it - IT IS!
One of the nicest restaurants in Downtown to entertain people for Business. The food and service is consistently good here. No short skirts or cleavage show here. Damn old school fine dining. The chef is very accomodative on your requests be it salad or pasta or your game. Its a bit on the expensive side for average folks but you know Vancouver is expensive. I do love their variety on the menu and they are all so good and a descent wine selection too.
I will make it short an sweet!
I have been here a few times, twice with friends and once with my hubby. ALL the times the service food and atmosphere have been outstanding! The servers are prompt, attentive, and very good at their jobs in general. Everytime i have been here i have had the kitchen create the 5 course dinner for us, so the were no need for menus. The price range is approx $150pp doing the 5 course(not including tip) and it is well worth it. If you can afford to do a nice dinner once in a while, i highly recommend going here, you wont regret it!!!
We walked in and were greated by the owner himself which was a delight.
We started off with their antipasto and their salmon carpaccio. I was really impressed with the freshness of both of them and the quality of their curing of the salmon was to die for!
For our mains, we went with the sea bass and lamb chops, which both were absolutely on par with their appetizers!
The sea bass was broiled to perfection and accompanied with a light tomato sauce with basil and extra virgin olive oil. Very italian which was what we were looking for.
The lamb chops were crusted with dijon, pistachios and rosemary with a mint vermouth sauce which was a fantastic combination that remined me of what Mama used to cook me!
We were too full for desert but caught a glimspe of what they looked like from a table beside us and were very impressed with the presentation along everything we tried.
If you are looking for a great place to dine with great service, food and atmosphere, visit Don's! The price may be a little high for the average joe, but you get what you pay for!
Kudos to the chef and owner!
Despite some of the previous reviews warning me to NOT do Dine Out Vancouver at Don Francesco, the tasty menu told me otherwise.
My fiancee and I were greeted happily the second we came in and seated right away. We did get the table right by the door but I didn't let it bother me.
The service was amazing. Our server got us our bread right away and we never had to ask for more water or top off our own wine! Now onto the food: Fan-flippin' tastic! We loved everything we ate! I highly recommend the chicken/quail, you can cut the chicken with your fork it's so tender! And of course, the tiramisu was to die for. Not so sickenly sweet like the other ones I've tried. Oh, and you know you're eating authentic Italian food when everyone who works there speaks Italian!
As we were leaving our waiter actually apologized to us having to sit by the door! It wasn't necessary but it was really thoughtful of him to say so.
I can't wait to come back here again to try their regular menu!
My partner and I have trouble dining out. As cooks, we are incredibly picky, and the slightest bubble can ruin our entire evening. We came to Don Francesco on a busy Friday night and we were amazed at the experience. As soon as we walked in, we were treated as if we had been there before. Our drinks came immediately after we ordered them. We both ordered the 3 course menu. I had the penne, which I found more than adequate as an appetizer, and my companion had a fantastic Caesar Salad, where the dressing was more like a vinegaitte than a cream Caesar dressing. I found it refreshing and unique. We both chose the Veal Parmesiana for an entree. The amount of vegetables that came with the dish was astounding! I have never been more impressed with the sides. Each vegetable was cooked to perfection, and I especially liked the baked tomato, which had a flavour that was incomparable to any tomato I have ever eaten. The veal was moist and delicious. Everything on the plate was perfectly cooked and seasoned.
For dessert we both had Tiramisu. The flavour was phenominal. I do not like the taste of coffee, but this was heavenly. I had to close my eyes to take in the intense flavour.
To top off our fantastic evening, as we headed out the door, the head waiter bid farewell to my partner BY NAME, even though we had only briefly met him at the door.
Will we be returning to Don Francesco? You can guarantee it. It was my all time best restaurant experience in my 15 years of appreciating fine dining.
A fine-dining favourite! I absolutely love this place and can not say enough about it. I find myself telling two to three people about this Vancouver Gem every week so I thought I would try and write a review. My first...
Great, cozy atmosphere - fabulous old world charm and a place to impress a date. AHEM! Has a great patio for lunches too.
My favourite apps are the grilled wild mushrooms and the cheese plate. The bread is (obviously) fantastic too.
I would go so far as to say it may be the best wild mushroom/truffle risotto in Vancouver.
I've had a bite or two of other people's pasta dishes and it's fab as well, however I go for the items that I would just never attempt with a group of people at home, and that is the Game dishes.
Other items that are amazing are the DELLA SPIGA RISOTTI and others have told me several of the seafood dishes are extraordinary.
The service, the food, the ambiance were all exceptional. The waiter was always attentive and didn't miss a beat. The mussels were perfect in the white wine broth and I would have slurped it all up if no one had been looking :) The ceasar was fresh and crisp and the veal scallopini was prepared just right with a sauce that was flavourful but not over done. All round we went away feeling great about our dining experience at Don's. This could turn into a favourite of mine.
