A classic "joint". If you're looking for a great breakfast or burger, you've found the right place. Hot coffee and lots of it are served in cups and saucers like your grandma used. The service is quick and the food is fresh, just like the staff. All in a laid back atmosphere. The place is chock full of regulars, from dock workers to local artists. Once they know you, they always remember your favourites.
Mrs. C and I were in the chasiucruiser and we were craving breakfast. There was a half-eaten bag of trail mix in the glove box, but we figured we could do a little better. We were heading downtown for shopping so we decided to stop at DD since it was on the way.
The restaurant looked very basic inside, although it was tidy. I also checked out the w/c which was hidden in the kitchen area. It was very rustic. Clean though. Unfortunately, all the booths were taken, so we had to sit at a tiny table in the middle of the restaurant. My fellow diners seems like friendly urban types, and there were no weirdos or scruffians in the crowd. I would feel comfortable taking my mum to eat here.
We ordered a Denver omelet for me and ham and eggs for my beloved dining companion. Both meals came with coffee and toast. I would not say it was gourmet fare, but the food was well-prepared and very filling. The coffee was terrific, and we were impressed by that small but important detail. As for price, it was well under twenty bucks for the two of us. Service was great throughout the meal, with coffee top-ups and quality checks, although the servers seemed to be in conflict with each other. Very home-style. I think the dysfunctional relationships added to the charm of the place. The staff were friendly to the customers, so no worries there.
A good place for breakfast for folks with reasonable expectations.
I've been coming here for breakfast regularly Since October 2008, see my review of JK's which is practically next door. My best friend lives just steps away, and since JK's blew it we've been coming here a couple times per week since...
I agree with the other reviews, it's folksy, kinda homey/artsy inside, and the owner is absolutely delightful. The main server is actually quite good even though she's a bit loud... It DOES add to the charm of the place, and yes, I've heard them bicker, and even full out argue in the back, but for some reason it seems ok... I think they're sisters. They seem passionate about the service and that's a good thing!
The food is solid every time. I think I sent something back once... And I'm talking out of maybe 100 times?
I kinda rotate what I have cause everything's pretty solid... They know right away if I start by saying "sausage" she (either sister) replies, "butterflied sausage, eggs poached soft, brown toast hunny?" which is bang on... I say "Eggs benny" they know it's to be soft... I say steak, they know medium rare, poached soft" etc etc... sometime I throw an absolute curve ball and order scrambled with bacon or something, which makes her laugh...
Eggs are always flawless, the benny's have a nice THICK slice of ham, and the steak and eggs is excellent.
The coffee is WONDERFUL for this little diner... And they keep the refills coming non-stop.
The pricing is VERY inexpensive especially for the quality. I will always go to a place that serves quality over price, but this place delivers BOTH.
HIGHLY recommended for good, quick breaky at a reasonable/cheap price!
I drive by this place every morning for work, and it always intrigues me - a cluttered little window with a glowing neon 'open' sign. So, my wife & I decided to try it out last weekend - and we've found a true little gem. It's run by women in both the front & back of house; and the middle-age servers act like surrogate moms as soon as you step in the door. They call you 'honey', & 'dear', and make sure you're going to get just what you want. They make you feel like you're visiting home from college: you will be well taken care of, you just relax and have some coffee. The walls are full of old pictures & kitsch. Mismatching cutlery, plates & mugs just adds another level of 'hominess'.
The food comes out incredibly fast (under 10 minutes, with a full restaurant), and in the meantime they come around with coffee constantly. My wife ordered the 3 cheese omelette - it came with hashbrowns & toast. Everything was as it should be: good & hot. After asking if their hollandaise was home made (yes), I ordered their eggs benny with bacon. The eggs were hard (which I was impressed by - most places stop at medium, no matter what you say), but I've gotta say - I don't think I've had worse holly in my life. It was...semi-opaque, not a hint of yolky yellow. Not sure what recipe they were using, but there was no zip or seasoning. Just greasy tasting goop. But still, it somehow tasted like it was made with love!
Regardless, I will definitely be going back & recommend you do too. Stick to the basics (burgers, omelettes, sandwiches), and I'll bet you find a few haunt.
I was running some errands on Commercial and was looking for a good little breakfast place. DineHere led me to Dockers Diner.
A great little "greasy spoon". The service was quick yet polite. The eggs were cooked to perfection. The atmosphere was unassuming and quaint. The prices were very fair. I'll definitely be back.
Think Joe's but with no line and better prices...
I had Ruben, it was ok. Didn't have enough corn beef taste, but having buttering the outside before toasting the sandwich was a nice touch. It wasn't greasy, just crispy.
My date had the turkey dinner, it was a good value, but the turkey was tough but tasted fine.
The staff was friendly and kept the restaurant open for us a little longer so we could finish the game.
Docker's is fine for a greasy spoon, pretty much exactly what you'd expect.
However, I find the waitresses' there to be really annoying. When I come in for a breakfast and coffee I'm forced to listen to them cackle and bitch... at each other. They're overbearing to say the least, at least one of them is, the main one, not sure what her name is.
I'm sure they're nice people, and I don't mean to be a jerk, I just wish they'd tone it down a little.... or a lot.
This diner doesn't try to put on any airs of pretension - they just serve great food! Their burgers are extremely tasty and each one is distinctive, their steaks are amazing, they cook an excellent liver and onions, the pancakes are good, and their eggs & bacon breakfasts are yummy and filling. I'm struggling to find anything negative to say about the food... Um, they could put a few more fries on the plate? Seriously though, you're full when you leave and your mouth and belly are thanking you all the way home, what more could you ask for?
The staff are friendly and attentive without being false or intrusive. They treat you like a regular the first time you visit and the more times you return, the friendlier they get. It's like going over to a favorite relative's house for a meal!
The prices are more than fair, they could raise them by a couple of dollars and I'd still be pleased. If you're looking for solid diner-style cooking, especially all-day breakfasts, then this is your next favorite spot to go!
I eat at Dockers several times a month. I like the plentiful booths, clean restaurant and immaculate bathroom, and the friendly attitude of owner Joanne and her regular waitresses. Food is standard diner fare, with some Greek specialties, but they are open to substituting salad for fries or hashbrowns and the service is friendly and personal. Joanne, the owner is very community-oriented. They're always open, even on most holidays, and even when the power goes out!
After today's breakfast, I've decided that I will no longer frequent Docker's Diner, despite the decent food and prices, and the fact that it is so close to my house. I've visited the restaurant over a dozen times, most times leaving with a bad taste in my mouth (not from the food).
The ambiance in the place is great, old fashioned diner with interesting black and white photos. The food is okay, good portions and good prices.
My real problem is with the service. I always order the breakfast special. The toast always comes well before the meal, or well after. I switched my eggs from over easy to sunny side up, because they always came over hard. The hash browns are always burnt, today's being crunchy as potato chips.
The waitress is overbearing, often taking your order from across the room. Even 15 feet away, I feel like she's invading my space. She asks questions and answers them herself before you get a chance to reply ("How's everything, good?" then walks away while you look on crunching away on the hashbrowns). I suppose it could be considered folksy, but I just find it rude.
Yeah, cool looking little place, affordable, but ultimately, I leave feeling agitated and annoyed, not the way I like to start a day.
On the window it says Home Cook'n, and that is exactly what you get, only better. Menu is simple and classic diner-like. Sandwiches taste healthy and fresh, great soups that remind me of my Grandma's, great daily specials, and great coffee. Service wise its very diner-like, complete with plenty-o "Honey's". Atmosphere is cool, lots of booths and pictures of ships/docks.
Loved it, and I'll be back soon!
