Dark wood and leather lounge/bar/restaurant serving excellent food and drinks facing sunny English Bay.
I liked the Free House before, but love it now. It used to be a great place to kick back and have a drinkie, enjoy the view and let the breeze off the Bay waft over you. Now the experience has improved with an expanded drink menu and pretty good food. The mojitos were great, an improvement on the too sweet version they used to serve. And the yam fries and pistachio appies were well prepared. The new drink and dining menus look imaginative and I'll be back for more. Maybe now they'll fully capitalize on their prime location. Hopefully, though, they'll always have room for us local yokels who keep the place running through the dreary winter months.
Had the burger here, and it is terribly cheap, dry, and full of filler. The food quality is terrible. The service is ok, and its nicely designed. Its somewhere to go and drink, but absolutely do not eat there!
Walk too fast and you might miss it. Small place, right next to Milestones on Denman. The only reason I walked in was because Milestones had a 40 minute wait and I don’t do waiting, especially for Milestones. Run by the same company that does Bimini’s and The Granville Room.
This place is similar to Tatlows on Kits and/or The Granville Room on Granville in many ways. The décor is contemporary with lots of leather, wood, and metal. The windows face spectacular English Bay.
The food is a more upscale version of the restaurants mentioned above, which is to say it’s not only good but rather innovative. All the mains are below $23. The service is rather short and to the point, but not everybody responds well to being flirted with.
I would definitely recommend this place if you are up for good-quality food, but not quiet hungry/patient enough for a proper sit down dinner since it is first of all a bar.
I was down the other night with my boyfriend and I think we found his new favorite place! We sat at a very comfy booth and watched the hockey game! Had a great steak sandwich, steak and fries on special!, and pints. Will defintately be back for hockey, football and pints.
Being a regular at this place is kind of like Cheers. Alot of familiar faces and regulars at this Denman Street bar. Food is decent and could use some revamping but the servers are full of smiles ! Whether you;re here to meet with friends for drinks or with that special someone, this is a good place to hit !
Visited here on a Tuesday at 3:00 for a late lunch. Ordered a BLT with salad and a "beef dip" with fries. Worst excuse for an $8.00 BLT I've had. The advertised avocado aioli (or avocado and aioli) did not exist...pale tomato, shredded iceberg and two pieces of bacon period! The beef dip was hot and crispy but contained two slices of beef and only $9.00!! The fries were great. Really need to rethink the quantity / quality formula. Only get to Vancouver a couple of times a year and decided that we really should have had a "smokie" from the English Bay Beach vendor for better value.
