Delaney's on Denman is a friendly and often crowded coffee bar near English Bay in the heart of Vancouver's gay community. It has a small sidewalk patio.
I love Delany's coffee, and this location is the orginal before they branch out to the North Shore.
I find the service friendly, quick and like their other coffee locations, the coffee and snacks are good. If you're looking for a decent cup of coffee, something to snack on, to enjoy your coffee at this location or take out, I stop here, when I'm walking along Denman.
The espresso coffee here is good although I've only ever ordered regular or iced americanos. The service is good also; the staff are always friendly and greet you with a smile. The baristas are knowledgeable and efficient. But lets be honest here, you come here for the ambiance. There are few better spots to sit on the sidewalk patio, enjoy your coffee and people watch. In the summer, this area is very busy and the patio is usually full.
There are 2 locations of Delaney's, West End and North Van, I've been to both and enjoyed both. The staff is always very nice, as most coffee shops. The ambience is usually interesting, with crowds of people reading papers and chatting. Lots of gay clientele with their dogs waiting outside - I love that, because it's such a neighborhood-type place, unlike Starbucks which is more generic and corporate. That said, I do enjoy Starbucks coffees a bit more than Delaneys . But the closeness to my apartment and the ambience make this place a frequent stop.
The muffins can be a little dry though, and the desserts aren't top rate.. but I usually found coffee shop food a little second-best no matter where it is.
Located near English bay, good place to take coffee break after a long walk of Stanley Park Sea Wall. Casually accessible and friendly atmosphere. Good coffees but I personally enjoyed their Chai Latte; fully flavored with Chai spices but not too strong, and it did not feel like the watery one that some cafes fail to perform how to make good Chai.
I've been going to Delaney's for over a decade and the West End location in particular for at least 8 years. Their coffee is consistent and I love they get their beans from local roaster JJ Bean.
There have been so many staff changes over the years I've lost track, even though many of them were wonderful people and made my Delaney's experience that much better. Bertram is a rock. I can't say enough good things about him and how he manages the location. As for the "hawk", he's great. He doesn't try to blow sunshine where it doesn't belong yet he brings an important and unique level of service and character to the business. My girlfriend and I appreciate his attitude and hospitality (AND the "mo"!).
This has to be the best coffee place on Denman and yet I resist going in there because the staff are so surly and unfriendly if you are not a young, cute, guy that is... I hope that changes as I am always polite and nice when I go to have a coffee and find I am met with less than friendliness and I always say please and thank you! Seriously it stops me going there - and many of the local westenders too.. Shame.
The coffee and service style (taking names) is reminiscent of JJ Bean. The addition of chocolate whipping cream is from JJ Bean - still the best coffee bar. Not bad though.

I have been a patron of Delaneys on Denman off and on since it opened. More on in the early years due to the exceptional staff at that time. Today a friend and I decided to go there. She has been more consistently on as a patron over the years. We walked up to the counter and the guy with the mohawk just stood there. Never said hello, morning nothing! When I asked my friend what she wanted she told me to go first. I placed my coffee order and when I asked for a muffin I got the burst of air from the mohawk. You know the .....haaaaaa! Gawd you two are a pain. Made this big production out of getting the muffin, got my name and stuck it up where they make the coffees. Now it was obvious that the two of us were on one bill. So, my friend who had been watching all his actions then decided she wasnt wasting her money in this cafe......told him.....no reaction....he just rang in mine.....took my money and put the change on the counter......no thank you, kiss my ass nothing......just went on to the next customer......So I got my drink and asked for the manager. Bertram came along. And told him the story. At first, I wasnt overly impressed with his response. "oh people just think he's super gay"! When did being a bitchy fag/ super gay become an excuse for giving poor service? Being a gay man, just because a company supports the gay community doesnt mean they can take for granted my $$. We also expressed the fact that we arent visitors, that we are long time west end residents and that when times are slow in the winter....its the residents who keep him employed. I would much rather support independents than the "S" of the coffee world but with poor service like that I will take my $$ elsewhere.....and so should everyone who has been subject to the mohawk BS!
Delaney's at Denman Street recently became my favourite place. My hotel was a couple of blocks away and I went there every day for a week. The coffee is excellent, cookies delicious and everything is really good value for money. The service was great, attracting nice people, so consequently the ambiance was also great. I particularly liked the way they deal with line-ups at exceptionally busy times, taking orders and names. By the time you got to the end of the line up your order was virtually ready. Although only in Vancouver for a week (this trip!) I felt like a local and not a tourist. Thank you Delaney's!!
