La Piazza Dario Ristorante is located in the Italian Cultural Centre and offers old-world Italian cuisine in a warm, relaxed atmoshpere.
I've been here at least 30 times. From business lunches to romantic one-on-one with my wife to large (30+) family gatherings. The one thing that always impresses is the consistently good food and service. I've enjoyed half the menu items and have never been disappointed. My mamma is a good Italian cook and so is my wife and the folks at Dario's always dish it up as good or better (I hope neither of them read this). Their menu is authentic too. Never pretentious, just basic Italian classics. One of the key things to notice is how many Italians eat there... a lot.
I'm always impressed to see the same servers there year after year, esp with the turnover in that profession. To me that says a lot. One day I ran into a server on Commercial Dr. He recognized me and invited me to go have coffee with him. Its like a family. And they work as a team. Anyone passing by will get you whatever you need. They don't hassle you with being uber-cool and trendy. They just look after you. The veal dishes are all great. The canneloni is superb. If you order the house wine, pick the Sangiovese.
We tried Dario's for the first time and both the Mr. & I really enjoyed it. Our waiter was not the friendliest (possibly because we aren't wine drinkers and skipped the appys) but the other staff were very pleasant. The sundried tomato spread for the bread was fantastic. My pasta was cooked perfectly al dente with a tasty sauce and plenty of seafood. Hubby's steak and prawns were also very good. Decor makes you feel like you're in Italy. Next time we go it'll be with a group so we can feast on a big platter of tempting looking antipasto. Great deal with the Entertainment Card.
I love this restaurant. It is part of my "choice set" for business lunches, family parties (gradutations, communions, etc) and when the wife and I need a romantic night, not too far from home.
My first question to waiters is always..."what's the fish of the day?!" I just love the way the prepare all of their seafood to be honest. The second usually is..."what type of wine goes well with that?!" La Piazza Dario has some great wines to go with your meal.
The staff has always been warm and friendly, which is why we always come back. Of course the food is tops, but I always feel welcome and at home while there.
I can't think one time when La Piazza Dario has been mentioned as an option, that anyone in my company has turned it down.
If you want a nice homestyle Italian meal in a cozy restaurant with good people serving you...make sure to include this on your list of places to go in Eastside Vancouver.
Went with the Lady Friend to Dario's for a late friday dinner (8:45). Service was as good as always, with many different people coming to help us. My water was constantly filled and the beer glasses came chilled (a nice touch). The Lady's Caesar salad was serviceable, but my stracciatella soup was amazing and large for its price (7$). We both had pasta for the mains. My veal tortellini, while extremely tasty and tender, have been even more tender in the past. That said, they are a stand out dish as they are home made. Her dish, the gnocchi was very tasty and large for the price (15$). All in all an excellent meal.
Located at the Italian Cultural Centre you know the food is authentic! The decor is not that romantic, and we were seated behind a plant next to the door. But the service was speedy and attentive. We enjoyed our meals - two different pasta dishes that were delicious and very filling. We were too full for dessert. I would definitely go back.
The food itself was exceptional and most of the service was also great from other people, except for this one waiter we got who should take some Customer Service classes. We asked if we can order our appys first and then decide on our entrees because we wanted a leisurely dinner. He said we had to put in our full order right away and then said he would come back after we decided. Hubby and I opted to share 2 appys (antipasto...yummy! and their special mussels...was ok), gnoochi (really good, soft and melted in your mouth!) and their special veal double loin chop (excellent!). When our main arrived, there were 2 plates as opposed to one and we sent one back because we said we only ordered 1 veal chop to share. The lady who bought it to us was super nice about it and apologized for the mistake. Our waiter came by 2 minutes later with the other veal plate and said, "What am I supposed to do with this now?". I was shocked cause it seemed unreal to me that a service staff would treat their customers like this. He proceeded to say that we ordered 2 and mumbled that we will still have to pay for this before he stalked off. We stopped another staff member and asked for the manager, where we were told that she had just stepped out. Regardless, the veal loin chop was excellent and so was every other staff member that worked at Dario's except for our waiter. We did not get charged for 2 veal dishes but neither were we given anything else complimentary considering the bad service. I don't know if I'll return. If I do, it will be a long time. It's a good thing their food is so good!
This is the place to go for authentic Italian food. Below is what I had in my most recent visit.
For appetizer, I had the Avocado shrimp salad. Not only was the presentation exceptional, the taste of the salad was refreshing.
The penne pollo ( chicken ) pasta dish was my favorite. One of the best pasta dishes I've had in a long time.
Lastly, I had the salmon. Taste, texture, and flavor was right on.
Food: Excellent value.
I recommend this place for anyone who enjoys Italian food. To be frank, I am not sure of the negative experiences of some of the other diners!
This place is very italian inside. Service was GREAT... our waitress was very nice but they all have an authentic
italian accent when they speak, was cool. Our food was good too but i thin the seafood pasta was over prized but it was good.. seafood size was big, the only down side was i thought my ligunie was a bit hard or is that how authentic italian pasta is suppose to be cooked..I was unsure.. but it taste GOOD but the dish was sorta small for the prize. I also tried the desert canolli with some sort of cheese... it did not taste like cheese... yum!!!! try this place it nice but sorta pricey.
