Dan Sung Sa is a young and hip Korean restaurant located Downtown.
Well, interesting little place open till really late. It's dark, plastered with Korean drama posters on the wall and sappy little K-Pop songs are blaring on the speakers inside.
The food, yes, not terribly expensive, but not super cheap either. The portions are, for sure, more than big enough. Despite being quite hungry, we could not finish our 2 dishes. Done very well and though we are not "spicy fans", the food was quite addictive. Couldn't stop finishing up the soup! I'd say 2 of the mains could feed 3-4 people at least.
Now .. the service, yeah, even though there seemed to be only 3-4 small (i.e. 2-3 people) each, service was ... inattentive to put it mildly. Unlike many other places we've been to, seems to be run by a bunch of young guys who could really care less. (Who knows, maybe they work there to just to chill and spot for cuties...?).
Do they have any "unique" food to draw you there despite the service? Maybe, just maybe. (Gosh, there's so much stuff on the menu on many Korean restaurants in town, it's hard to know for sure). Take your time and you probably won't be disappointed. Otherwise, head down to Denman or Robson for many other choices.
I went here on my own one evening, and wasn't sure what to expect, since the waiters spoke mostly Korean. However, they were very friendly. The chap chae dinner was huge, yummy, and very filling. They also give you a variety of side dishes (a balance of spicy and not-spicy veggies), which were equally good. The decor is interesting -- they have old Korean music LP jackets and posters on their walls. This place is worth a try, if you want something other than Greek, Thai, or Japanese on Davie St.
The food at Dan Sung Sa is amazing and you get ample amounts of it for a fair price. But, if anything, go for the food and not the service.
I've given this restaurant a good amount of opportunity to provide the barest and fairest of service. They've failed on so many accounts. I had a group of about 15 people tonight and only half of my table received decent service. My half, of course, were completely ignored and had to track down the waiter to order our food after over 30 minutes of being seated. We also had to track down the waiter anytime we wanted another drink or anything else. I was quite disappointed. Again the food was great but, was it really worth it? I'll try my luck at another Korean restaurant next time.
