Spicy Cajun & Creole Cuisine
Either we got lucky or they have the growing pains out of the way. This is the old Tomato Cafe, so no real surprises from the layout or interior decor, looks like they did a minimal amount of work here.
Service was okay, nothing to crow about, but easily passable.
Cajun catfish salad was quite decent. We're hard to impress, so we'll leave it at that. It was more than edible. Another member had the jambalaya, which was tasty but very spicy. Obviously have consistency issues as they had eaten that previously and it was barely spicy. Also had steamed mussels, which were okay (but is it very Cajun?) but weren't the best we've ever had. The sweet potato fries were also (spicy) passable, but again, nothing to be really impressed about. The ribs, well, again, I'll give it a pass rating, but nothing unique here. Taste more like it's heavily baked or boiled in ... not much marinade and then slathered with sauce. The fried chicken was much better (though I question the authenticity). It was relatively juicy and had a pleasant light crust. Is it very good? I think so. The best ever? Probably not.
All in all, it's not a bad place. They provide reasonably capable food, decent prices and service. It might be worth a first visit, but I'd hesitate for return trips as it's lacking any sort of real "punch" or uniqueness to draw me back.
I really enjoyed this restaurant. The food was delicious, the prices right. I found the service a bit aloof however... and I didn't really feel like I was getting much attention. I didn't get water for the entire meal, despite asking for it many times. That is a peeve of mine. I'm thirsty dammit!
Have the baked beans. have the fried oysters, and have any of the jambalayas.
I been coming back to this place every week since it opened for lunch take out. (I have yet to dine in) We usually get 2 Po-boys one with yam fries, the other with rice.
We switch up what po-boys we get each week to try and keep it interesting. Most of the time we get one calamari and one of the other types.
The yam fries are out standing, some of the best in town.
My favorites include Calamari Po-boy, pulled pork, Crab cakes, Black chicken.
My only complaint is that its costs about $8-9 per Po-boy ($20 for lunch for 2 people). I can't afford do that every day. Thia food just down the street at Cambie and 16th is only $5 and is much more reasonable.
So until they drop the price be a $1 or $2 I will only be eating there once a week.
Went to dadeo today even after the mixed reviews below because it's in my area. It was a rainy day today so the place was kind of quite, the decor doesn't look spectacular but it is very clean and comfortable in there. The place looks small from the outside but is actually quite large. The jalapeno jelly that came with the biscuits was quite nice, i ordered the bayou burger with potato has and my girlfriend had the southern fried chicken with jambalaya rice. The burger meat was soft and not overcooked like most places on a good bun. My girlfriends fried chicken order was quite large, a bit on the salty side but good otherwise. I also question the authenticity of this place, but if you're in a mood for a nice big sandwich I'd give this place a try.
We were very disappointed with this place.
The gumbo had very little flavour and almost nothing in it. My omelet was supposed to have andouille sausage, but it was clear that it was a breakfast sausage or something similar. The food was bland, which is something cajun cooking should never be.
The only thing that made this place bearable was the service. However, it was clear that this was also hit-and-miss. Our waitress was pleasant, but the server attending to the only other table that was full was not pleasant at all.
We won't be returning.
I live in the Cambie area, and we were thrilled when something opened to replace Tomato. However, our hopes were quickly dashed when we visited for the first time. Our experience echoes the other diners who have commented below, poor service, greasy food, and stale bread.
However, as it was a new restaurant we decided to try it again. To be fair, there was improvement, but still well below the quality of an average Vancouver restaurant.
Dadeo also has very odd opening hours. Despite calling themselves a bar among other things, the doors are always closed when I walk by at 10pm and frequently they aren't open for the whole day.
Only recently has there been live music on one night, I would have imagined this to be the perfect place for live blues on Cambie Street. It's a shame that they aren't better as they're currently cornering the market on affordable non-asian food in the area. You're better off springing 10 more dollars a meal and walking a few doors down to Pied a Terre.
The best french toast in town. Great eggs benny. A charming place I'm glad we discovered. The service is particularly friendly and dammit, just a great breaky, and I'm a picky customer. I've yet to be down for dinner, but when you make food so well, I can predict another great meal. Highly reccomended!
This place is very good. It's a cool laid back funky hang out. When you walk in your feel at ease.which is important when your about to eat a good meal. The prices were normal, but worth what you pay, you get a really good meal that defenetly fills you up. Good service.Little outside are to eat in the summer. And when you are done your meal and don't making them money they don't make you feel you have to leave. and still treat you well. I'll be back...pulled pork sooo yummy
I first had the pleasure of eating at Dadeo's for a going away dinner. Our group of 8 had a great time with the staff as well as the food! We ordered the Banana's Foster for dessert, which is prepared at your table and lit on fire. sooo delicious!
After such a great experience my first time I decided on recommendation from a friend to go there for brunch on the weekend. That was about 3 months ago and I have been back every week. Their choice of items is different than what you would find at other places. My favorites so far are; The Ace, a biscuit with herbed cream cheese, salmon, poached egg and jambalaya sauce. Comes with yummy seasoned potatoes. The king if I am really hungry, 3 eggs, bacon, sausage, potatoes and a sweet potato pancake. As well they have omelets and lots of other combos of items. I have yet to try the french toast but I think I will tomorrow!
I find the staff friendly, attentive and fun. The music is great. Restaurant is clean and spacious. The overall feel of the place I find warm and inviting.
I have yet to find an item I dislike on the menu! A couple of my favorites are the sweet potato fries, jambalaya, chicken wings, pulled pork po' boy, and of course the above mentioned brunch! The prices are reasonable for drinks as well as food.
After having just returned from New Orleans recently I was very sceptical of DADEO but My wife and I went there for lunch and we were both very pleasantly surprised.
I had the Pulled pork Po Boy, the bun was fresh and chewy and the pulled pork itself was very flavourful. The Sweet Potato fries were without question the best my wife and I had ever tasted.
While not 100% as in New Orleans Dadeo is by far the best Creole/Cajun food either of us have eaten this side of 49th parallel!
Friendly service too. We will definitely be back
Unlike the last reviewer, we didn't find the food was bland. Now don't get me wrong, I love spicy food, but this was just not subtle and not that great. Jambalaya was bordering on un-pleasant.Portions large, not always a good thing! Our 6 year old wouldn't eat the chicken tenders because he thought they were too greasy - and yes, we do visit fast food joints once in a while!
Service was very good and the children's vanilla ice cream was yum, but not worth a return visit..
I visit Dadeo weekly for the cajun sweet potato fries... and if you're a "dipper", make sure you order extra dip... it's finger licking good...
If you're feeling guilty about just having fries, add a side of cajun grilled chicken breast... mmm...
My only complaint: this place is closed on Wednesdays...
Oh, and I love the green jalapeno jelly that arrives with fresh biscuits at the start of every meal...
I had a pleasant time dining at Dadeo's. The food was great and the environment was lively. I hear there will be live music. If they extend t heir hours pass 10pm, that'd be awesome for a late night drink. I will definitely return and try other things on the menu.
My wife and 3 of our friends dined at Dadeo this past week. The food was very tasty, though it did take quite a long time to arrive. However, our server (the young lady with the tattooed arm) was absolutely charming and attentive, and was able to recommend several dishes off the menu to suit our tastes. Perhaps the kitchen could use a little more speed, but overall this was a great restaurant, and perhaps some of the best service we've had in quite some time.
the decor was okay but not great...i had to get my husband to switch seats with me because the mural i was facing was so badly done. wrong appetizer delivered, crab cakes mushy, ditto for the blackened (aka 'burnt') shrimp/scallops. the ribs were decent.
I ate at the new Vancouver location on Cambie. I ordered the blackened catfish sandwich to go. To my surprise who ever made the sandwich poured the pan oil all over the sandwich and the bread was day old. The rice that came with it was nasty, bland tasting day old instant rice. I ended up throwing it all away except for the coleslaw which wasn't bad.
The problem was I wrote this place and complained and they didn't even take the time to respond. Save your money and eat elsewhere!!!
My wife and I and two guests went to Dadeo's for lunch this past Sunday. We all enjoyed both the experience and the food. The owner was friendly and helpful. The waiter, who gave us the "full Julio experience." was skilled and quick to respond to our every need and the food was plentiful and delicious. I had the catfish po boy and my wife, the cafish salad. I've been to New Orleans and to the Edmonton Dadeo's and this meal was every bit as good. The fish was succulent and spiced perfectly. My friends had, respectively, the YaYa mixed plate and the Philly Cheese steak po boy and they both pronounced the food excellent. We all had the sweet potato fries. They were fabulous. Perhaps some of the earlier reviewers experienced the growing pains that any restaurant must go through but I would have to say that none of those difficulties occurred when I was there and I will definitely be back.
My daughter and I checked out Dadeo a few days ago. I had been a fairly regular customer at Tomatoes but feel their prices had escalated a little too high for my tastes.
I had the Dadeo Po Boy combo and my daughter had the ribs. Both meals were excellent (I'll definitely order the ribs next time) and the generous portions provided an ample take-home. :)
Service was excellent and the food came quickly although the venue was busy.
I know the restaurant is just starting out and growing pains are to be expected. But for my money and taste I know I'll be a regular!
We live only a block away from the new Dadeo at Cambie and 17th. We were very happy to see something replace the greatly missed Tomato in the same spot. While it was a drastic change to the menu, we were hoping for something different and high quality.
As in the review above, we were un-impressed with the quality of the food. It took a long time to come for us as well, and it wasn't busy at at all. Our server was nice and attentive, however the owner just wandered around the whole evening and ignored attempts for me to refill my water.
The water was necessary as the food came out over-fried and dry. My wife had fried chicken that was really dry and unsatisfying. I had a po'boy, that was relatively flavorless, with stale bread.
The decor is either a work in progress, or very unimpressive. It looks like a stripped down tomato with a couple of pieces of artwork, and I wish the quality was even close to as high. The website advertises it as a bar as well... but it's open only until 10 each night.
On a positive note, the yam fries were very good and well worth the $1 upgrade.
I haven't seen anything from them yet in trying to embrace the neighborhood or become a local favorite. For the SHOPTHELINE event, they had no samples, advertising, enticing events to lure the people into the restaurant. I hope it improves quickly.
Had high hopes for this new place taking a chance in the construction laden Cambie Village. So decided to show some support by trying it out. I have always enjoyed Cajun/Creole cuisine and was looking forward to it.
To keep it short. Restaurant was busy but now rockin' by any means. We were a larger party so waiting was not unexpected. It took almost an hour for our appetizers to arrive. Someone who arrived last received his entree order before some appetizers even got there, blamed it on computer gliche. Some people's entrees arrived 15 minutes before others. It was a mess. Understandable to a degree as they were a new place. However, no apologies were made, the "owner/manager" had a dour expression on his face the entire time. Definitely need some customer skills.
The worst part though was the food. Terrible fried crap. A calamari po'boy was apparently just appetizer calamari in between a stale bun. Terrible corn bread. We had a wide variety of orders at the table and I hate to say, none of it was good as in Vancouver caliber of good. That's about all I can say. One of the worst meals I've had in a while. What a disappointment, as I said I was hoping for something much more!
