Another branch of the Cupcakes chain, located more conveniently downtown off of Robson on Thurlow. Sweet pink decor and awnings entice passersby to pause for a sweet treat.
Finally after years of years of seeing the store(s) in Vancouver, I finally tried the Diva cupcake. I remember seeing Cupcakes as a teenager and thought, "Wow this is really cute" As an adult, I still felt the same, but was never really motivated to actually buy one and eat it. Not sure why. I must have felt really poor when I was younger. =) I was out with a friend this past summer and we just decided to have some cupcakes for dessert on a gorgeous sunny evening. I love the color, the feel, the packaging & the look of the cupcake, and even the really cute ambiance of the store. The service is great too. But wow, the cupcake is uber SWEET. And it wasn't moist inside as I expected. I was slightly disappointed. Perhaps my taste buds were changed by my first taste of cupcakes from Magnolia Bakery in NY last summer, but I loved that cupcake. So sad that I didn't feel the same about our local Cupcakes here. I do, however, love watching their show. I think Lori & Heather are awesome. Kudos to them for keeping their brand strong in Vancouver. =)
I love to bake and was super excited to try my cupcake from here. Honestly, it's just mediocre for me. The only plus for the actual cupcakes here is the fluffiness of the cake part. There is way too much icing on the cupcake and way too much sugar. Each time I have a whole cupcake here I have a really bad sugar rush and get incredibly hyper.
The store is really.. awfully pink, but it's cute? For 3 something per cupcake, I would rather go down to Granville Island's market place and get a more special dessert.
I'm not sure if the recipe has changed over the years, I still remember the first cupcake I had from this chain and for some reason I remember it tasting much better.
I'm not sure if they are still using real ingredients and real butter in their baked goods, I hope so. As for the flavour notes, the base cake in vanilla was good but wasn't very buttery. The chocolate cake was okay, I liked the drier texture, I wasn't that crazy about the taste of the chocolate cake though. I doubt they melt some real chocolate into the batter, and for a stronger chocolate flavour I like to include real chocolate in my baking.
I bought some of the mini cupcakes, mini anything is cuter. The presentation is excellent these look so appetizing and just cute.
Basically all of the cupcakes come on either a vanilla or chocolate cupcake base, the only variations are with icing and topping. The lemon icing tastes too artificial, it reminded me of dish soap or something. The cream cheese icing is far too sugary, but it's also buttery. The plain buttercream was very good (it's usually tinted blue or pink etc.) The chocolate icing has chocolate melted into it and tastes rich. I liked the mint sprinkled with mini chocolate chips icing. I love mint anything. My favorite icing was the caramel one, it's usually combined with the chocolate cupcake base but I think it would go better with the vanilla cupcake.
Overall these are yummy, if someone offered me one even the lemon one I wouldn't turn it down. I like that the base cupcakes aren't too sugary. Also for the icings I didn't like I just scrapped it off. While this cupcake shoppe isn't perfect it is yummy and everything's baked freshly.
Finally, had my 1st cupcake at Cupcakes.
After a much anticipated wait of 2 years....finally got the chance to try the vanilla cupcake with pink buttercream.
Cake was moist. This surprised me considering that past reviews rated cake as dry. Cake resembled texture of a sponge cake with strong flavor of a chinese like egg sponge cake (which is yummy).
Buttercream was not too sweet, and it was beaten well to light airy texture. Only complaint: could not taste any vanilla. In fact, the taste resembled the taste of a white cake from Safeway. But luckily, I like Safeway's white cake . Vanilla flavour was missing....
I took my daughters here and they kept talking about it for the next two days.
Prices are reasonable given you expect them to be a little more expensive than a Safeway or Superstore bakery.
the Ambiance is a 10 out of 10. The cupcake, however, I thought was pretty good but not as amazing as some would make you believe.
I would go back and I would recommend the place though
What I like most about Cupcakes is the dainty pink interior of the store. The packaging of the cupcakes and the display of the variety of cupcakes is very professional that most first time passerbyers would take notice, and try out. Service clerks are very friendly and cute with their pink cupcakes t-shirts.
However, that's where the good stops. Stripping away the exceptional marketing, one is left with the ultimate test ~ the taste of the simple, yet complicated vanilla cupcake? Simple recipe, but difficult to push the vanilla flavour to wow the taste palate. Cake itself is moist, with same quality of a sponge cake. Vanilla flavour I did not taste. The buttercream frosting had a nice light texture, and not too sweet, but lacked vanilla flavour as well. Did the baker forget the vanilla extract is what I asked myself...being a vanilla cupcake, I expected a strong vanilla flavour. Disappointed only with lack of vanilla flavour. Previous reviewer is correct to say that the cupcake taste similar to a Safeway white cake. However, for $ 2.75 / cupcake, I had higher expectations than Safeway's $13.99 whole white cake.
Wonder if they give a refunds?
We were just visiting from Victoria for my birthday, and we ran into the New Cupcake store that we had not seen before.
We had a 12 pack of mini cupcakes, they were excellant, every cupcake has a different flavour and the icing matches the cupcake flavour.
We bought another 12 cupcakes 2 days later, they are the best I have had yet.
The cupcakes here are simply amazing! I always enjoy stopping by to pick up a sweet treat! :)
"Diva" is my favourite cupcake! I definitely would recommend this place to anyone who hasn't tried it yet~ There are tons of flavours to choose from, and they always new ones for special occasions.
The interior of the store is so adorable. It's all pink and sophisticated!
Wow, I being a cupcake lover and baker myself, after all this time of wanting to try a cupcake from Cupcakes, the first bite threw me off guard. A friend of mine brought me a 6 pack of cakes and i was so excited to eat the whole box! They do look nice (though a bit heavy plastic looking), the taste alone had me only trying a slice of each one only to be disappointed. Too sweet, cake is dry and not buttery. Not recommended! If i had to choose one, eat the chocolate, that was at least edible. The others, don't bother.
