Coco Rico is a lively cafe on Robson St. serving up a menu of Asian fusion tapas along with an extensive martini list.
Since I can't give a 1.5, I will be more generous. The pasta dish I ordered had too much cheese but little else. The meat didn't taste fresh at all. Service was not exactly poor, but not great either, just passable. It's not likely I will return anytime soon, even though it's fairly conveniently located.
I had lunch with a friend at Coco Rico last week as I had a coupon in my Entertainment book. I had walked past here several times (in the evening), and it seemed to be quite popular.
On this occasion, however, the place was empty when we arrived. We opted to sit outside, since the weather was quite nice and it was warmer outside than inside. My friend and I both chose the smoked salmon pasta, which was served with garlic toast. I requested that my meal be made without dill, and they were happy to accommodate. This also shows me that the creamy dill sauce on the pasta is not pre-made. Surprisingly, pre-made sauces are a common occurrence in some restaurants.
We didn't have to wait very long for our meal and when it arrived, it looked as expected. The flavour was decent, but as the title says - average at best. I found the prices to be okay ($13 for the pasta) and with the coupon it was even better. But for my money, I probably wouldn't go back here without a coupon. Maybe next time, I would go in the evening as it was quite boring at lunch with an empty restaurant.
Went there for the first time with my friend. We had the wings and some beer. It was pretty good-would love to try other food on the menu; price is alright-can be viewed online. The place is pretty small and decent looking. Like the added touch of candles in the evening when we arrived; was still being set up, possibly just for the evening feel. A little crowded when it's full and a lot of people are sitting down (unless it's just me); hard to walk around a small little pathway with chairs all around you.Washrooms are located in a hallway. It (the men's) was really dirty. Hope it's not usually like this; not sure if it's cleaned every 1-2 hours or when the day is done/restaurant closes.
My main problem with this restaurant and hope not all staff are like this:
Ms. S, our server and only one working there at that time, was just okay when serving. Didn't expect too much; took our orders and handed it to us. Gave us wet napkins when we asked for extras; expected dry ones. When we paid she was nice.. For a bit. After we paid and she saw we gave no tip, she complained for quite a while. Embarrassing for us and to the customers. She asked us to give a tip, as well as said other things along the lines of: "I pay 10-15% tips whenever I go to restaurants. You must follow the rules of Canada and tip the same thing.. Blah blah blah". She was extremely snooty. She rolled her eyes and then just walked away saying, "Fine!", after I explained that the customer has a choice whether or not he/she wants to give a tip. She could've been more professional and not do that. No "Thank you for coming and have a nice day!", just walked away towards other customers. Rude.
I would love to go back to the restaurant and try other food on the menu, but maybe someday in the future. Bad customer service. Not appealing to me. I would've loved to have an enjoyable time there, but she just ruined our day.
I was to this place during the Olympics. There was a hockey game (Canada vs Russia) so I entered to see and consume. Right away I felt the pressure from them that I have to order food as well beside my drinks. I ordered wings. The man (I believe he's a supervisor. He's Indian looking. Very bad service) who brought the food didn't bring any napkins... so I ask him for some... he didn't answer but also he didn't bring any... I waited until he was again close to my table and I asked him 2 times some napkins... he avoided me. I believe that's his service. In the end one of waitresses come by and I asked her as well. And I get the napkins and she and Canada hockey team saved my evening.
I just randomly walked in on a friday night with a friend, we just wanted a place to grab something to eat, drink and chat. The place seemed pretty small from outside, but when you actually go inside, it's quite roomy. There were so many korean international students there though. We just sat down at the bar because we didnt want to wait, and the waitress gave us menu right away. We got the 20chicken wing special with two glasses of beer. Chicken wings are 25cent each so it was $5 for 20 chicken wings. Very good deal!! we added on a ranch sauce for a dollar? I cant really remember.
So our food arrived and i was surprised at how meaty the chicken wings were. They were just like any other chicken wings sold at cactus, joeys..etc, maybe even better. They only have salt and pepper added to it so its just plain flavor, but it wasnt skinny or small in portions. The beer was really good accompanied with the chicken wings. Afterwards we got one strawberry margarita and pina colada, their blended drinks werent that good. my strawberry margarita had a lot of alcohol in it, which is good, but the juice and ice separated and i had to drink it really fast. We also got nachos with chicken after, it looks small in portion when it first arrives, but it actually isnt! its really good with chicken and they put lots of cheese on top. We had a shot of cocaine and superman each and that was a really good deal too. They play pretty good music, except that they only have one washroom so you have to wait a while, esp with all those ppl drinking beer..the wait is a little long in this really brightly lit up hallway, with everyones face being red..not attractive!! but I would def go back to this place for chicken wings and beer!!
I've gone here many times with colleagues and we have enjoyed most dishes and martini; however, there is something lacking. Martni is good and if you order enough it is adequate portion but the service isn't quite as, uhm, impressive (leggy and blond) as many other restaurants in the area. Who doesnt appreciate some entertainment when dining out? Anyway, I solved the problem last time by taking my own. However the steamed vegetables served on the side were a joke; they were also cold and flavourless. My advise, strictly stick to the seafood only dishes.
I just moved downtown and always passed by Coco Rico Cafe but never went in. One Sunday I decided to give it a try, I ordered a Quesadilla and my friend ordered chicken finger's. My server asked if I was really hungary because the quesadilla was an appitizer size, I told her that would be fine.
About 20 minutes goes by, everyone around us is receiving their food and then our server informs us that the oven is broken and that's why our food is taking so long. (Who cooks a quesadilla and chicken fingers in the oven)
5 minutes later the server drops off only the chicken fingers and walks away without any explanation as to when my quesadilla will be out. By the time 30 minutes rolls around I said to my server that it's going on half an hour for my food. She rudely responds " I thought you weren't even that hungary!"
That has got to be the rudest thing a server has ever said to me. Did I not come to your establishment to eat food! To wait Half an hour for a small cheese quesadilla is ridiculous. Why the kitchen would not start to pan fry it once they realised the oven was broken is beyond me.
After all of this they didn't even offfer to take anything off my bill, the "manager" offered to by us a drink but by tha point I didn't want to spend another second in there.
Overall, the ambiance was horible, the menu was very boring and the actual menu's were falling apart. The service was the worst I've ever received. Just because you have a restaurant on Robson doesn't mean you should slack on everything else.
Went there for some $.25 wings which were actually pretty good. However, absolutely some of the worst service I've ever had. The bald guy which I believe is the manager talks to you like you are wasting his time. Implied that I was a liar when I confronted him about an item on the bill. He said that everyone that works here WOULD'VE told me that item would be charged. Unfortunately, I told him that I wasn't told and he said he can't help me. Proceeded to explain to the owner what happened but he wouldn't budge. He states that he wants all his customers leaving happy. LAUGH ya right, he wouldn't even take off $3.50 to make a customer happy.
Absolutely one of the worst service I've ever had other than another restaurant along Robson which I won't explain. Like a previous review said, just because you have a restaurant on Robson does not mean you can give up service and still expect people to come.
Conclusion: I would never go back. Place does not deserve my money at all.
The food was primarly finger food to share. popcorn shrimp and such which is delicious but over priced. Nonetheless, it's all about the alcohol. I find it easier to down a shot of 151 at Coco Rico than it is at a party and I really don't have a clue why. They have an extensive list of drinks and many of which are quite appealing. From bitch drinks like the Malibouish ones to the manly birthday favourites like the Flaming Lambourghini.
Service is always outstanding and quick to order. Very friendly and optimistic.
As for ambiance, it's a nice and dim atmosphere and is only nice after you get hammered because it's quite a small and dense place. However, feels better when it's completely jam packed.
Overall, as with it's extensive drink menu, comes its extensive menu prices. Expect your bill to cost a few bills if you plan to have a birthday party there.
