A moderately sized cafe with a robust specials menu. Free wifi Internet.
I happened to work in the same building and everyday around lunch time I start smelling grease coming through the air conditioning vents. Lobby stinks even more at lunch time... Ok, it's building's fault for not containing the odors, but i wouldn't mind it so much if it smelled like my mom's kitchen, would I? Well, i gave them a few chances at the beginning, but they've only proven that food is indeed very greasy, oriental lady is very cheap (she charged me .25 for an empty small paper cup!), milk/cream jugs for coffee have foul odor from never been thoroughly washed... forks look like dry-cleaned with an old towel... Price looks OK compared to other prices around the area, but certainly not worth the food. By now i walk briskly past Christine's Cafe and don't even look at that direction.
A few friends and I had finished studying at the downtown library, when we decided that we wanted to try something other than the Flying Wedge or Subway.
A friend suggested Christine's Cafe, for its turkey melt panini and shepherd's pie. I had the chicken caesar salad wrap, which was fresh and delicious -- exactly what was called for on a warm summer day.
Overall, I'd go for the food and the free wi-fi. Inside, it's just the right amount of busy and quiet that makes for good people watching, as well as proper studying.
I highly recommend Christine's for it's friendly service, as well as it's amazing food. Try the yam fries or their blueberry muffins..yum!
This cafe is hidden in the courtyard of the highrise park just on the other side of Thurlow Street from the Bental Centre block, so it's almost impossible to notice unless you're told about it. I only found out about it because I used to have an office that looked right down on it.
The special menu items (there's daily specials and a standard specials menu) are almost always excellent. The only complaint to be made is that the portions can be rather small depending on the meal, but that's the commercial district for you. The regular item meals (mostly sandwiches, cold and hot) can be hit and miss. Specials are always $7.95, so after adding in a drink, you're running about $10.
The management is always friendly and willing to accomodate you, but not necessarially very chatty with the exception of one girl (I think the most of them are uncomfortable with the English language), although they seem hesitant to accomodate unconventional orders.
