Authentic Japanese preparations. Fine sushi. Robata and Bento boxes in this upper floor clubby establishment.
We used to come here when we lived in downtown. Make sure to reserve Robata counter. It is huge and makes you feel like dining in Japan. Very stylish and luxurious. Table area is rather boring - only recommended if you have a large group. The dish not to be missed is "Gindara" - Black Cod marinated in special Miso sauce. You need to get there early to savour this dish - often sells out. Food is very good. Great ambience. Busy with local/visiting Japanese. Highly recommended.
I have been there many times over the past year, a very busy lunch joint on most days. I usually order different kinds of grilled fish which I find delicious. Make sure you have lots of time if you're ordering any robata or grilled fish because they grill the fish from scratch after you order, and it may take a good half hour before you get your order. Grilled fish combo comes with a small salad and soup. Sushi and sashimi are fresh but I find pricy compared with other same quality Japanese restaurants in the area.
Chiyoda is the Japanese restaurant you'll want to visit if you're entertaining clients or guests from Japan. Dishes here - including sushi, soba, and grilled seafood - are authentic and delicious.
Since it's tucked away on the 2nd floor at Alberni-Thurlow, it tends to be overlooked by the trendy set or Yaletowners. However, serious Nippon foodies and salarymen are often seen here on a Friday night, partaking in traditional fare and glasses of Asahi Super Dry. A real gem!
