Chinese-Indian fusion cooking at its best.
Came here on a not really busy Friday night. Service was friendly, and food came quickly; perhaps too quickly. The ambiance is what you would expect of a typical Indian-Chinese restaurant - drab and slightly dingy. It was clean enough. Between the 6 of us, we ordered 6 different dishes: the Mongolian Beef, the Spicy Ginger & Garlic Prawns, the Haaji Chicken, Spicy green beans, Spicy Paneer, and the Prawn Chow Mein. The Beef was very saucy and flavorful but I went home super thirsty. The Spicy prawns were a bit of a disappointment, because it was heavily battered and drenched in the sauce. It was neither crispy nor crunchy as I had expected. A bit of a mushy mess. The prawn chow mein was overly oily and didn't offer much in terms of flavor and texture. Their only saving grace were the Haaji Chicken, Spicy green beans and Paneer (a kind of Indian cottage cheese with a tofu- like texture). All three of these dishes were cooked slightly better with crunchy spices and chillies. I wouldn't say their prices were cheap, as it was still around $100 for all of us, but we didn't even order alcohol! And for 6 people, having that many saucy & oily dishes, they should have offered more rice. At least that could have soaked up more of the over-sauced food. Overall, a bit of disappointment, so we won't be back. =(
I've been here numerous times with my boyfriend and friends. He's more like a carnivore and I'm a vegetarian. The menu has a lot of choices for vegetarians as well as dishes with meat, so definitely nice for me.
There's not usually a line up at the place so there's no need to make reservations. The staff here are very friendly, and they always remember to come refill waters and ask about the food. The food is decent, but like some of the other reviews, I found it a bit salty. My boyfriend got this deep fried shrimp dish that he really enjoyed. Usually the fried rice (any is good) is really good, at times they may be a bit heavy with the garlic. The tofu is really delicious, it had a nice mixture of spices and it was deep fried, but not to the point that it was dripping with oil. I've tried their veggie soup.. which was a little bland for me. But their sweet and sour soup is yummy and they have a vegetarian alternative! Their portions are pretty big, so don't order big soups unless you're sharing with a few people, same with the rest of the dishes (includes appetizers). Sweet and sour tofu is good too, not as good as the other one with garlic though. The masala vegetarian egg noodles are yummy, but a bit oily. But it's still really good.
The place itself is clean, very simple. Nothing fancy with the ambiance, but that's okay. I like their food. Would definitely go back. Good value too. Must come back for a lunch, they have a great deal for 6 bucks that includes food and drink!
I've been here twice with my boyfriend. He's more like a carnivore and I'm a vegetarian. The menu has a lot of choices for vegetarians as well as dishes with meat, so definitely nice for me.

I try to limit myself from coming here too often since I come out packed to the brim everytime.
Located on the corner of Kingsway and Rupert with a conspicuous yellow awning this place serves up desi style chinese cuisine with many delicious choices.
For a smaller restaurant they have quite a menu. I've barely managed to put a dent on trying different dishes each time but favourites include the Sweet & Spicy Garlic Prawns, Manchurian Lamb, Mongolian Style Beef and Haaji Chicken. These dishes are flavourful, have a decent amount of zing and best served hot (I've had take out many times and it's not as good). There's a "Chef's Recommended" section with a plethora of others including appetizers, soups, vegetarian, noodles/rice and even desserts (they make a note that they do not serve any pork). I was disappointed with their Chow Meins, however. The noodles are limp and a little different tasting compared to the ones familar in chinese establishments. Their green beans are a little overcooked and a bit on the oily side. Personally I would avoid ordering their noodle and rice dishes (their vermicelli dishes are fine, however). Most of their dishes pack a little punch so be sure you can handle it otherwise have a drink ready.
Service is quick and the servers are friendly and polite. The place isn't much to look at but it's clean and the room is filled with spicy aromatics. Eat in if you can.
Fantastic little place to fill up on spicy (south) asian dishes.
One of my favorite restaurants. I've been coming here for years now. The owners are really friendly and the food is really good, I usually order takeout. It's very unique as well chinese/indian. I usually order the manchurian noodles or rice, the hot and sour soup is good, the chicken pakoras are awesome as well. Just solid asian food.
This is a place where you feel at home. Our server was lovely - very helpful and patient, and multilingual. In our party, we had two English-speaking Canadians, one Mexican, one Hong Kong fellow who could speak English, and one Hong Kong lady who spoke no English. Such an ecclesiatical group can be very hard to please - believe me, we go out often. We're usually bound to find something that someone doesn't like. But the server switched languages like that and made everyone feel welcome.
The owner took the time to talk to us. That is a real plus. He's an ethnic-Chinese person who grew up in Kolkata, India.
The food tends to Chinese more... but the sauces and flavourings have a decidedly Indian influence. They offer some Indian appies like pakoras - the best pakoras I've ever tried.
What is memorable about this place for me is that, with each dish, each person at the table made "Mmmmm...." noises with each bite. The flavours are combined in such a way that they are familiar and yet exotic. The quality of food prep is excellent.
Only 2 criticisms...
1) It has the typical ambience found in most Chinese restaurants. Harsh lighting, everything looks like it could use a reno. The owner pointed out, though, that they only rent the space, so they can't do much about it.
2) The foods were ever so slightly over-sauced. They tasted good, but the chicken and fish were rather swimming in them. But oh well, more for everyone to scoop up on rice.
This is a must go - do not miss this place.
I tried this place with a couple of brave friends this week, and it was awesome. The food is quite hot, but incredibly tasty. The staff are super-friendly too. The decor is a bit plain, but the place is quite clean, and I came to eat not to look at the scenery. They seem to get a big Indo-Canadian clientele with a few Chinese in the mix, so I think the food is authentic.
We had the Manchuran prawns, which had 12 big prawns in a spicy red sauce, the Hakka chicken and shrimp chow mein which was also spicy and savoury, and the chili garlic lamb, which was outstanding. We rounded off the meal with a large steamed rice (too much for 3 hearty eaters). Of course we drank a gallon of water each because even the rice couldn't cool our tongues!
The food is very well prepared, and there are nuances of spicy flavour, not just brute force hotness. We all agreed it was the best meal we have had in ages. Definitely a place to visit to get your tongue dancing with delight.
Recommended!
My cravings for spicy and greasy food was met with disappointment with a take-out order with Chili Pepper House. The Manchurian mixed vegetables were bland, as with the Szechuan eggplant. Both dishes were excessively hot. I did not enjoy my meal at all. The garlic vegetarian dumplings were okay. It seems that they use the same pre-made sauces for most of their dishes (Manchurian, black-bean, oyster sauce, garlic etc). The only redeeming quality was the fast turn around for a take-out order (@10 min) and the 15% discount for take out.
Will go back to Green Lettuce and hope they haven't gone downhill!
There's lots of restaurants around that have the words `chili', `pepper', and `house' in their names. But there's no place like this. I agree with a previous review that the indo - sino fusion they've created here is unique. It isn't spiced like either cuisine, it's transcened both. And it's hot, and garlicky, and great. Went last night for dinner. it was busy as ever. We had garlic tofu and veggy pakora appys, manchurian chicken chow mein, prawns in tamarind, house chicken and green beans. It was great. Just go and try it. Fresh imported beer to cool everything down as well. I should note that the place is very clean and friendly as well. My friends seem to think the cleanliness is a big issue, I love the family that runs the place. Hot.
I work at Cassandra hotel and thought I'd check Chili Pepper House for a quick work lunch. Friendly staff asked me whether I wanted spicy or medium spicy dish. I had a lot of questions about what to order and the server was helpful and patient. lol. The food was quick, fresh and very tasty. Will go again. recommended
this place ROCKs - a nice place to go if you wanna "kick-it-up-a-notch". We relied on the staff for their recommendations/suggestion and they were spectacular.
We went with a chicken, a beef, a pork, and a vegetable dish ALL cooked to 2.5 star spicy - just RITE!
The beers are kold and the prices fair - definitely a MUST-try. These Chi-Indian places are popular in TO and glad they're conin' here
Hello there,
A buddy of mine has been eating and raving about this place for a long time...I on the other hand have passed by this establishment for years via a work route I use to take. I decided to try out Indo-Chinese food.
We decided for 5pm and try to beat the rush...which we did. Upon entering...not too many people and the restaurant looks decent with an oriental influence.
Our order...Chicken pakora with chutney as the appy and 3 core dishes of chili prawns, manchurian eggplant, and masala veggie fried rice. The service was pretty solid and our meal arrived very quickly. The verdict..the appy was pretty normal. The rest were pretty hot and good. The heat the dishes were generating definitely made me brake a sweat and asking for more water helped somewhat. Overall, a good meal. Definitely will be back.
My friend and I always argue over restaurants because he is a vegetarian and isn't overly supportive of my carnivore ways. The Chili Pepper House is the only place that both of us agree on.
They have the best hot and spicy crispy tofu in town. I would be happy to eat just that but we usually pick a couple of vegetable dishes and I get my chicken.
The decor reminds me of great East side Greasy spoons that have all seemed to have disappeared. This is very obviously a family run business and the service that I have received has always been excellent.
Best indian styled chinese food in Vancouver. Love the Green Beans and Sweet, sour chicken chicken cantoese noodles...Mmmmm, it has a great zing in the flavor that just pops in your mouth. Its like having a party on your taste buds. Nice spicy yet suddle flavous that blend together nicley. I have recommened it to all my friends and family members and they all enjoyed. Great portion at a great price. Definitley my favourite restuarant of all time. I have been going here since it opened a coupl of years ago. Go there and you'll never forget it Servise is really friendly. Not to mention the food is excellent. I have been there once a week or more! Truly delicious and is definitley a kepper for the rest of my life.
Great food at a low-er price.
The Indo-Chinese fusion kicks it up a notch and really makes this place different.
The owner is usually there and once you go a few times he knows who you are and gives a bit extra service.
It's a small place so sometimes there's a long wait, but other than that it's good.
Highly recommend.
I was visiting Vancouver and checked out 2 restaurants in the area. The first was Maurya - totally disappointing and on the 2nd day dined at Chili Pepper House and I can simply say that this is the closest Indo-Chinese food that I ever tasted in North America which comes really really close to the food that you get in the best Indo-Chinese restaurants back in India. We had the Manchurian Prawns and House fried rice and both were truly great. The prices are reasonable, but I should warn that the serving size are big. The service is friendly. Ambience is plain but when the food is that great, who cares about decor. I would go back there for sure if I would visit Vancouver again.
the place is right across the street from the #19 bus stop and is easily accessible (kingsway and rupert). vegetable dumplings were very good as an appetizer, and the other three vegetarian dishes we ordered were pretty good too. unless you are feeding a family of five, do NOT get the large rice. The bowl is huge!
the atmosphere is pretty plain, but the food is good and the restaurant staff are very friendly. I had a great time, and it made my ex-girlfriend happy.
The food is very good, no question about that, but service is very indiferent and at times quite rude. Our server at times clearly ignored us intentionally when we tried to get attention for more drinks, and water, and clean cutlery.
As I am rarely in this area for meal time, I doubt I will be frequently this place again, but if I lived nearby I would probably get it for take-out. But I dont care to pay someone to ignore me.
WAYYY to salty , too greasy. the service was ok, but it wasnt very welcoming. they didnt even greet us! . my kids and i love they food at ASIAN SPICE, theres never a dissapointing visit there. But chilli pepper food is OK, if u can afford to gaina few lbs.
I don't understand how people think this place is good. It is probably the people who have never eaten real chinese or indian food that think this place is delicious. I didn't like any of the dishes, they were all smothered in too much sauce. I would recommend this place if you want to have high cholestoral and a heart attack.
