Coming here in the evening, this seems to be a good, quiet place at that time to just relax, or even study and read. Nice, interesting decor and the sole server seemed genial enough. I had the regular plain cheesecake, with strawberry sauce. They really, really loaded on the sauce - my slice was practically swimming in it all! It made the bottom crust soggy, and also overtook the tangy flavor. My sister got mocha cheesecake without sauce, which was quite a bit tastier. For the price, I don't think the portion you get is worth it - it's a fair size, but the bill for 2 slices was about $14. For that price, I could just get myself a whole cheesecake, and not drown it in red syrupy goop.

Only 1/4 of our groups order was correct, everything else was wrong. The funnier part is they tried convincing us that it was us that was wrong....

And the cheesecake was really mushy

Overal the ambiance was good, music was lively but the desert was sub par. Would I come back? Probably not.

It's about personal preference

I thought this place was good cuz of the stars it received but I could've/should've read the reviews closer. I don't like their style of cheesecake. It was too soft & it has no base. I just ate a slice of mush. It tastes fine but I don't like the texture (I like mine firmer) and lack of pie shell (who makes a cheescake with a shell?! ever heard of contrast?). Also, it's not that worth it, cuz after I ate my cheesecake with strawberries, had a few bites of my friend's cheesecake, I didn't feel satisfied. I ended up going to Safeway for packaged cheesecake from their bakery & it was so much better, sorry to say. Very disappointed. Other than that, the service was good & you don't have to wait for a table.

Worst service ever!!!

Service sucks!! I have never been to a dessert place with such bad service! I finally understand why others only rate the service 2.5 stars. All the servers were rude! As for the manager(I realizes why the staffs are all so rude)cause the manager doesn't even care about customers complain. If this service doesn't change there is alot more cheesecake place is Vancouver that makes better cheesecake if a better service attitude.

change of recipe

We used to love this place, especially since they enlarged it so that there is essentially very little wait time for a table. Unfortunately the recipe has changed.. it's just like any other cheesecake place now. No more fluffy texture.. just plain old regular cheesecake. Plus they've also made the sizes smaller - not that it matters because I didn't like it enough anymore to finish the whole slice. What a shame.

VERY slow

No matter how many times and how many years in between visits, the service was and is always so slow. It's true that the cheesecake isn't too rich like a lot of the traditional variety. It's also true that they don't offer much in terms of variety. So it's definitely no reason to go back though the atmosphere is nice. Numerous bakeries offer similarly light tasty cheesecakes, you just need to know where to go. As for sit-in ones, there are far better places too, just that they don't usually specialize in only cheesecake all day round.

If I want Cheesecake, this is the place.

I have been going to Cheesecake Etc for years, and its a great spot to enjoy dessert with friends or on a date. I usually eat somewhere in the area, and come here for dessert & tonight it was a nice stop.

I love their cheesecake of the night flavour and seen everything from Blueberry, rum, raspberry cheesecake to name a few over the years. I decided to order the plain cheesecake with strawberries, and got a large slice. Each bite is how I remember it, in years pass, and it was light, delicious and hit the spot. Although I couldn't finish mine, they had no problem packing up mine and sending me on my way.

I try to go in when they first open after 7pm, and if its the weekend, it can get crowded and loud, since its not all that big. Bring cash, have fun, and enjoy eat bite.

It is so hard to find decent cheesecake anywhere, but after many visits over the years, I can say that this place consistently delivers. I usually get the strawberry topping, and Mrs. C. prefers plain. The coffees are 'meh', if that is the right term :)

I agree with the previous esteemed reviewer re the portion sizes. That said, my preferred time to visit is after a meal somewhere else. After all, most full-on restaurants charge way too much and only provide substandard desserts. This place focuses on doing one thing really well. Please work on the beverages though…

Recommended.

Best Cheesecake?
By epicurious of Burnaby, BC (507 Reviews)
Submitted Thursday, November 29, 2007 - 5:19pm [Dine in]

I wouldn't admit this to be the best cheesecake. In my opinion, the portions were a tad on the small side. I guess I relate this place too much to the American "Cheesecake Factory" and was expecting a huge selection of variety. Unfortunately, they only offer a limited selection: Cheesecake, Choco Cheesecake, Cheesecake trifle, Special, raisin and walnut cake. That's it.

We shared the Cheesecake w/ Strawberries, and the Cheesecake trifle. The plain cheesecake is what it is, plain. However, it was light and fluffy - plus marks for that. The Cheesecake Trifle was very good.

The ambiance was dim and cozy - just perfect for the dessert fix and a nice chat with friends.

Likes? Open until 1am daily! Service was really good. We were 4 and had a beverage each and shared 2 desserts. With such limited seating, I was pleasantly surprised they never once hurried us or even had a min. charge/person.

Dislikes? My good friend asked for a cup of hot water (just water) and they said because so many ppl ask for hot water, they need to charge $1 for it. That's ridiculous - doesn't it come out of their espresso machine??

Likely to return? I wished they had more selection, but the cheesecake was nice and the hot chocolate came EXTRA hot, as requested, so I am likely to return.

Where's the Cheese?

I don't understand why ppl were raving about this place. The cheesecake is small, unpresentable and untasteful. It's creamy but I couldn't taste the cheese or anything. I usually love eating the crust of cake, but this one, ehh, I leave it on the side of the plate. Even I can make better ones with the no-bake cake mix.

Cheesecake seemed to be missing something

...maybe it was the crust!

This is a great date spot, nice cozy ambience.
Service could have been better. The server told us the gourmet special that night was the original cheesecake with blueberries. When we were just finishing our cheesecake, the server sat some people at the table next to us and we heard them say the special was cherries! We would have ordered that! Later we confirmed that it was indeed cherries not blueberries.

There were only a few cheesecakes to choose from compared to other dessert places.
Slices were on the small side, but they were delicious. Would have been even better with crust.

Decent cheesecake

Cheesecake Etc. was well known for it's great cheesecake and all my friends told me that they have amazing cheesecake but when i went there last month, sometime in February 2009, I was a little disappointed. I guess everyone told me that it was perfect but I feel that it was just alright. Yes, the cheesecake melts in the mouth and yes the strawberry sauce was good, but there're other places that offer better dessert selection. Just like Sweet Revenge or Sweet Obsession, they have more variety and also more dense and flavorful cheesecake selections.

a bite into a fluffy cloud

Owned by a married couple, Cheesecake etc. claims to serve quality jazz to the ears and desert to the stomach. The place (recently expanded) is nothing fancy, but its dim lights and furniture ignite a very cozy and comfortable atmosphere.

I used to come here once a week and all the times that I have been here, I've only seen a pianist once. Usually they don't have music on, so the "jazz" aspect of this establishment is a bit questionable to me. That's okay though, I only come for the cheesecake.

Their cheesecake ultimately comes in two flavours: original and chocolate. You get different toppings, like chocolate, strawberries, whip cream and whatever special they have that day. What makes these deserts stand out is that it has the cheesecake taste we love minus the risk of it being too sweet and its super fluffy texture. As an associate once said, "It's like taking a bite into a fluffy cloud."

Their real homemade hot chocolate is pretty awesome too.

The servers are not perky and overly kind like many places. In fact, I'm not sure if I remember one smiling...nevertheless they are polite (enough) and efficient. I kind of like how they get to the point. They know what their doing and not once have they made any mistakes.

This place will surely satisfy your cheesecake cravings, and not put a dent in your wallet - if you do it right: come after ten (so parking's free), and avoid ordering hot water (they charge you for that).

Nice place for cheesecake

This place after all these years is still a nice place for cheesecakes. The pieces seem to have gotten smaller but still had enough of it (perhaps just the right size so that you dont start to hate it).

The toppings, I would still definitely go with no toppings or strawberries since the other ones seem a bit too sweet for me. The drinks are okay and the place's ambiance is still nice.

Service - Polite, friendly and fast.

Ambiance - The best aspect of the restaurant. Very cozy, intimate and just an incredible atmosphere.

I think there's pretty much only one type of cheesecake they serve, but with different toppings (eg. strawberry sauce). There's pretty much nothing else on their menu.

But the cheesecake is really good. My favorite is the one with strawberry topping.

Romantic ...

There is a definite lack of nice, romantic spots to have a coffee and great dessert. The only one that I would spend time and my money at is Dairy Queen and this place. Dairy Queen doesn't have the romantic ambiance that Cheesecake Etc. has however ...

Being a chocolate lover, I B-lined directly to the chocolate cheesecake with whipped cream. What I like about their cheesecake is that it's not heavy like most cheesecakes. It's nice and light ... and I could possibly fit two servings if I didn't seem like a glutton to the waitress. I'm not too crazy for their drinks. I had a cinnamon-type drink and all I could taste was cinnamon. A bit too over-powering.

But for a nice, cozy, romantic place for some great cheesecake, this is the place to go. Especially if you are on a date!

Ordered a Cheescake with Strawberries. The cheesecake is very soft and it melt in your mouth. There are some cut pieces of strawberries. Also ordered a hot chocolate and you can taste the bitterness of the coco.

The place is dark and have candle on each table. It's great if you want to share a cheesecake or two with your date.

Service is okay. Nothing specially good or bad.

Beware singletons, if you thought it was safe to walk into Cheesecake Etc. for just a slice of benign cheesecake, you thought wrong. I went with just a friend and it was Awkward Central. You're better off to somewhere family friendly like True Confections.

I can BUY cheesecake like their's at the grocery store. It's ridiculous how unattentive the servers are as well.

Cheesecake Etc. has been in busy quite a while and it is usually busy.
Over the years, I've seen a slow, but small decrease in the texture and taste of their cheesecakes. Sometimes they can be a bit cold because they've been in the freezer for too long and they haven't fully defrosted or sometimes they can be too hard or not soft enough. Also, the size of the cheesecake has decreased as well.
In addition, for six dollars a slice and probably a very low electricity bill, you would think they have a bigger profit margin to actually renovate the place. The booths are made from wood they feel like they are going to break and it has no padding.
The service could be faster if the barista and the waiter/waitress were not always in the back chit-chatting it up.
I still like the Cheesecake but sometimes it makes you rethink the worthiness for paying six dollars for a cheesecake where service is slow, consistancy is low, price is high and ambiance is decent.
