The Charles Bar is a new establishment in Gastown's Woodwards building serving American fare and a wide selection of beer.
I came in with my sister for a birthday dinner and was sort of floored (in a negative way) by the level of noise in the place. The website made the restaurant look much more formal than it really was, which was just an O.K. decorated sports bar.
I did the Dine Out Vancouver menu and had something like... three cheese broccoli soup, jambalaya and lava cake. The food was great, no complaints there, but it seemed like the price was kind of steep, even for the amount of food served.
As for service, our server was great and seemed really happy to be there, so that was good.
All in all, I doubt I'll be going back, but not because of the food but because of the pricing and the ambiance of the restaurant.
Went to the charles bar over the weekend and had an amazing experience. I was expecting a typical bar service and food but got that WOW factor in all areas. Service, food and atmosphere... We (my gf and 4 other friends) sat by the big screen tv and was served by a beautiful brunette girl (can't remember her name). We had the nachos, the pulled pork poutine, the tuna tataki, the cheese burger, and some items off of there feature menu. We were so impressed of how fresh everything was. We even asked the server and she told us that everything is made in house fresh. Definatly two thumbs up from me.! Overall the vibe was great for a group of friends or even a night on the town. I will be back for more!!
We are from out of town and had a Groupon, so thats the only reason why we went there. We picked the cheapest thing on the menu- the Tri Fries with aoli- which was really good! I mean, it was just fries, but they were still good. But everything on the menu looked gross and boring.
It was a dude bar, full of sports t.v. and the waitresses wearing tight clothes. Certain people are going to really like this bar & thats the demographic they are aiming for, but it wasn't for us. Not a lot of personality.
I went here with a open mind. I live in the area and am all for cleaning the area up. I love what they are doing with the W2 and creating a community feel. I was hoping this bar was like that as well. Well it was quite the opposite. First off prices here were insane. Drinks were pretty much club prices, food was priced like a fin restaurant but was pub quality. Just because it looks like on a plate doesn't mean it is any good and be charged an insane price. The servers all had attitudes and seem to upset that I was not spending hundreds of dollars. I was hoping this place could be a a local neighborhood hang out, it is just a cess pool of predaciousness.
I agree with the posting below as food are very mediocre and they charged insane prices. I had a drink and an salad and it came to $20. They printed all our bills in one long bill so I didn't get a chance to look at the bill. I handed my credit card over to the server and she did not mention that the service charge was included so i added tips to my total. My friends also added tips to their totals not knowing our bills had already been service charged 15%.
I don't think I would ever return to The Charles Bar as food are not good and way too over priced for its quality.
