Delicious food, funky decor!

I bought the Groupon for the 3 course lunch, so we decided to go there for lunch last Monday. Really funky decor, really suits the "Yaletown feel". The colour scheme was silver, fuschia and blue. The washroom was a little cramp and dark, but I loved the blue lighted counter.

We ordered the beef carpaccio and the shrimp with heirloom tomatoes to start. The presentation of both our starters was excellent, very appettizing!! The carpaccio slices were thin and perfectly sliced, with 2 deep-fried mozzarella balls in the middle. Delicious!! My shrimp starter was just as excellent. Nice-sized tiger prawns with sweet heirloom tomatoes.

We had the striploin steak with potatoes, and pan-fried rockfish fillet, done asian style. Again, both plates were very nicely presented. The striploin steak was perfectly medium rare, as perfect as any steak can get. It was served with potatoes on a bed of polenta, both were very delicious as well. My rockfish entree was good as well, with the fish cooked just right, very tender, just flakey and not a second over. I found the teriyaki style sauce to be somewhat ordinary and a little too salty for my taste. But overall, those were 2 very well done dishes.

For dessert, they only had 2 choices, so we ordered one of each - honey roasted figs with a bit of blue cheese with a dallop of mascarpone cheese on puff pastry, and watermelon shooter and strawberry moose on sponge cake. The honey roasted figs dessert was surprisingly delicious. Everything on the plate went so well together, with the sweetness of the figs balanced by the saltiness of the bits of blue cheese and the crunchiness of the pistachio nuts. The puff pastry with the mascarpone cheese was also a very nice touch as well. However, the second dessert definitely looked better than it tasted. The presentation was impressive, very artistic, but the dessert itself was just an ordinary strawberry mousse cake. Still tasted good, but was nothing nearly as impressive as the way it was presented on the plate.

Will definitely be back, no doubt!!

Outstanding food, terrible decor

I agree with the former reviewer. The decor did not work. Their attempt at contemporary clean and perhaps edgy design was not well executed. The chairs look like cheap fold out party chairs for a lawn party.

Food: was very good. We have not dined out at this restaurant since it closed down as the Elixir. The reason being every time we walked by the decor was rather uninviting. We bought a Groupon for their 3 course lunch menu and are very glad that we did. The food turned out to be very good and of course was an excellent value with the Groupon.

Ambiance: None and as previously mentioned had it not been for the promotion I would have still continually passed on by without going in. I would not recommend having a supper in such a non desript surrounding but because the food that I experienced at lunch was good I would consider returning for lunch only.

Service was friendly but very slow the day I was there for lunch. Seemed a little disorganized and perhaps not enough staff or inexperienced staff.

Really Opus?

I enjoyed Elixir and did not care for this restaurant at all. The decor is like hanging out in a skateboard park and felt I should be wearing baggy pants, a cap backwards, and oversized sweatshirt. Their website said 'smart casual' but I think it should read "gansta" given their decor and graffiti like pictures. We had a Groupon and I am very thankful for it otherwise our taster menue would of cost around 65.00 for lunch. It would of been cheaper and I would feel more satisfied if I went across the street and for much less for lunch! It is very incongruent that the managment is attired in a tie and suit with a casual atmosphere. The only saving grace was the very polite and nice waiter. I would not return.
