Jazz club and restaurant.
We checked out the Cellar one night recently, the singer had a great personality and was quite good on some songs but others she sounded like a cheesy lounge singer, the food was quite expensive and very hit and miss, the nachos at $14 plus $4 for guacamole was an incredibly small portion but tasted good (hard to mess up nachos), and my steak dinner at $27 was a large portion but one of the worst steaks I have had recently, I would definitely never order that again. I had a taste of my friends duck and pork, and both tasted better than my dinner. My DH ordered a naan pizza and found it similarly awful. I think because of the music I might try this place one more time, or go just for music and drinks next time.
I had booked an evening at the Cellar recently with friends since we were all interested in listening to jazz. I booked before reading the reviews below. When I read them, I almost cancelled but am glad I didn't. Based on the poor food reviews, we stuck with appetizers which were fine. I wouldn't go for the food, but the entertainment was very enjoyable, the atmosphere a pleasant change from Vancouver's typical trendy modern and the staff/service friendly and efficient.
Are the food prices a bit high, perhaps but prices for the shows are very reasonable. It's a small place and really a miracle they have managed to stay in business and offer such a range of musicians.
We will certainly be going back - give it try!
I recently went back to the cellar having not been there in a few years and I was very disappointed. The meal I had was slow in coming and was very bland tasting. The music was wonderful however so the evening was not a total waste. I saw a review in the courier newspaper a week or two back and it was very complimentary but personally I found the food very dull and overpriced.
