The food is good, the view is awesome and its a great place to eat. The prices seemed reasonable but the portions were small. The bill gave me sticked shock.
I would not hesitate to go back but I think you can get the same at Sandbar.
I gotta say, I love this place. For me, the atmosphere/vibe and killer views make it great. Food isn't always fabulous but often very good. Servers are usually very good. I had the mussels on the appy menu most recently and they were pretty good. My mom had the Wok veggie stirfry, not outstanding but decent. But to be honest we barely cared, we were overlooking the harbour and drinking wine, and it was just a snack anyway. I agree with the previous poster that it's better here for lunch maybe, or for a summer afternoon drink.
I have eaten here a couple times and as beautiful as the views are, it doesn't make up for the mediocre food. Their "big" salad is neither big nor good. Boring dressing on bland greens with an egg, one baby potato, 3 olives and probably half a beet. I can make a better salad any day and I didn't go to cooking school! My husband had the olive and feta ravioli. The tomato sauce was too sweet and there was not an iota of olive flavour in it. Upon inspection, the pieces of olive were smaller than a peppercorn. No wonder you couldn't taste them. I'm sure the seafood and steaks are good, but it takes more than that to make a good restaurant. Also, the wine prices are a tad ridiculous. $30.00 for a half litre of Blue Mountain. If it weren't for the location, would it be so popular?
We came here for an early dinner Saturday evening before leaving the downtown area. Carderos is in a wonderful location with fabulous views. Unfortunately, can't say the same for the food. We both had burgers and salad. The burger was pretty much inedible. The only flavour to the burger was salt. The salad was limp and old. If you can't make a simple burger and a salad then perhaps it's time to move on and give this prime space to a more deserving restaurant. The beer was great.
Having been to a lot of restaurants in Vancouver, Cardero's left us very disappointed when it comes to quality of their service. Very strange and inconvenient seating system (you have to wait for a bell and a flag in the air when your table is ready) is one thing. Confused hostesses and less than happy waiters is yet another. Food was alright and so was the patio view, but everything else was highly disappointing. Not coming back.
I keep coming back to Cardero's for the great staff and consistent food. It isn't fine cuisine and that is ok, because it lives up to its own high standard. For a pub, it actually makes a lot of restaurants look shabby.
They have the cleanest glassware next to Cin Cin. That means a clean, tasty pour of Kilkenny or Guinness.
Best burgers in the Coal Harbour area!!!!
we love this place for the location and the ambience. we didn't have a reservation on Thu, it was packed for lunch and when I mentioned to one of the staff that it was my significant half's birthday and could she please help me, she immediately did. His salmon was excellent; my ravioli was ok. Wish there were more dishes on the menu for a vegetarian and not just one wok, one ravioli and a salad!
Cardero's is the perfect restaurant to take out of towners to: solid menu, excellent location and views, and reliable service. I have always had consistently good service and food here. In fact, my only complaint would be that the menu hasn't changed for some time - I started coming here about 6 years ago and each time I come the menu seems to be exactly the same as the last time. Some modernization of the menu would be nice.
I recommend the torta milano for dessert.
Just popped in for a Sunday afternoon light lunch at Cardero's - the weather was magnificent and the view amazing. My wife and I went for the Squid and Chicken Wok plates - they were just OK ... but could equally come from a western Chinese express take out. Our waitress was decent - but nothing out of the ordinary given that there weren't many others dining. I would go again for the location, but not necessarily the food.
I have been to Cardero's three times - 5+ years ago for dinner, once in the lounge/bar two years ago and most recently in the lounge (never been to the patio).
Anyway, each time, over the years, the experience has been about the same. The location and its view being the best aspect of Cardero's.
For my most recent visit, we wanted an afternoon drink and snack so we decided Cardero's would be perfect to relax by the water. The lounge has big leather chairs but unfortunately they were all taken so we ended up sitting at a table right above the dock. Very nice. Very nautical. Very Vancouver.
We only had beer (no price on the menu but on the bill a sleeve of draft beer was $5.13) and we shared a Homus plate ($9.95). The portion of the appetizer was quite small but of good quality and presentation. Quite tasty. The menu selection has changed and there is too much seafood and not enough variety of items (especially for appetizers).
Even though the lounge was about a 1/3 full, there was only one server staffed so the service was a bit spotty. However, the girl was pleasant and polite (not her fault she was the only one there).
Overall, this is a great place to take out of town guests or a date. The view is impressive and the ambience is casual and relaxed.
On a Saturday night, I came here with the other half for a dine-out experience. It was 8pm and the place was super packed and super loud inside. I knew it was not going to be a good evening date because in order to talk across your private table to the other person, you're going to have to shout. My nostrils flare when I shout so I decided to not talk throughout the full hour of dinner. Meanwhile around us, there were just people left and right laughing, yelling and all intoxicated + having fun. Nothing wrong with having fun but the loud restaurant or bar scene is not my thing.
The good thing of course is the ambience of the restaurant (dimly lit w/ west coast architecture, cedar wood ceilings etc) + large windows with a great view of coal harbor. The bad thing other than the crazy amount of noise is that the kitchen is open to the dining area so your clothes will smell like bbq and grease at the end of the night.
The food was nothing special. I orderd the squid wok appetizer, chicken as main entrée and for dessert, there was just one option - carrot cake. After finishing all 3, I did not really have a "let's come back next time" feeling. The food was just average at best. Actually to tell you the truth, I had better tasting food at Crystal Mall or Aberdeen's food court.
If you do decide that you want to get ripped off, come here during M-Thur only. The weekends are too loud.
I had the Spinach Salad, which comes with pecans, dried raisins, goat cheese and beets. This salad was scrumptious. And as a main course Pan Fried Oysters and Wok Broccolini, plus a side order of Fried Rice. All delicious, although the fried rice contained peas which seemed a bit over-cooked. My dessert was Warm Chocolate Nut Brownie with vanilla bean gelato. Oh, this dish was excellent; a chocolate lover's dream.
Our server was top-nothc. She was friendly and attentive, and never left us hanging.
The location of Cardero's is stunning and the restaurant decor is warm and comfortable.
Overall, I think this place is good value for the money and yes, I will go back here and also recommend to friends.
Been going to Carderos for years - what happened? The food is bad, the service was bad, and it wasn't even busy. Must say I love the lounge ambiance and the musicians. It's the only thing keeping me coming back, but in the future it will be only for a drink before heading elsewhere. Boo :(
Just so you know in the seafood wok....it's loaded with salmon, little scallops and it notes lobster on the menu however, it's delivered with a baby lobster from Asia, not Vancouver. Why? It's $24.00 for the dish and two carrots. Not very much value for taste and presentation. Lots of salmon a little scallops and a few shrimp. The Lobster was visually a tiger prawn.
The hamburger was disgusting...the bun was soggy and the bread was very thick.
Servers are a bit green.
Our bill was $110.00 for two dishes and four drinks. One of which was a hamburger.
View is great, location is great, ambiance is pretty good in the lounge. The patio is great.
The value sucks and the servers need a class on how not to ask dumb personal questions.
Over the years, we've been to Cardero's several times. We come here because of the location at the marina... the view is hard to beat! We love the west coast style that Cardero's offers. Unfortunately, I think that the food has some room for improvement.
Waiting for a table in the bar, we order ceasar drinks. These drinks were so spicy and over-seasoned, I had to request that they be watered down. When we were seated on the patio, the view was pretty good... but the food was kind of bland. We had the tuna tomato salad and this was probably the tastiest dish we had, essentially a seafood spin on insalata caprese. My husband had the cajiun lingcod and I had the vongole linguini. While edible, neither dishes were great. We followed the mains with the sorbet, which was obviously scooped earlier and water started to crystallize, and a cappuccino, which was yummy.
The service was above average. The server assumed that we were tourists and worked hard for a good tip.
Visited Cardero's with my partner twice over a 2 week period. Was really busy both times and had to wait in bar area until outside table became available. Bar area really pleasant and they hoist a flag to let you know your tables ready which is a novelty. Had a good table outside with a lovely view of the surrounding area. We both had the salmon burger with fries which was so good! The bread we were told was home made and the fries not greasy at all. I also had the spinach salad with goats cheese and red onion which was really good. Waitresses really helpful and friendly and service was excellent. Would definitely recommend to friends and will return on my next visit to Vancouver.
My husband and I took some out of town guests to Cardero's. Everything was alright. Not great, not poor. The menu is small. I had the shrimp wontons with fried rice. My mistake - don't order Chinese food at a non-Chinese restaurant. Not good at all. The patio was nice but the tables and chairs are all packed together too closely. Everyone else seemed to enjoy their meals. The restaurant looked a bit worn. It was ok but I wouldn't return.
My wife and I went here on a beautiful sunny evening. The service was prompt, though not terribly friendly. We ordered two appetizers and one salad to share. I sent the squid back because they were tough, dry and lacking in taste, the worst I've had in Vancouver. We ate the mussels but they were so-so, three were unopened meaning not safe to eat, the broth they were steamed in lacked flavor. I should have sent this back too but I guess I'm too shy to return two items!
I won't be back. This place lacks caring in the kitchen. The waiter didn't hesitate to bring a substitute for the squid but the shrimp dumplings that replaced it were just passable and the sauces out of a jar! I thought the waiter should have demonstrated some concern. He didn't.
After receiving recommendations to visit Cardero's, husband and I went for a dinner there. My clam chowder was disappointing, his jumbo prawns far from jumbo and his lamb was mediocre. My tuna dish was very good - the best thing about the evening. We had the highly recommended chocolate mousse - it was ok, but nothing wonderful. Our server was really odd - she didn't seem to connect with anything we asked and had a very fake face on, although other servers who brought our plates or walked by seemed much more attentive. A beautiful location and lovely big room, a little noisy but we were sitting next to each other. Not great value for what we paid. Wouldn't return.
Been here twice - once for lunch and another time for dinner. I had a good experience on both occasions. Prices are a little high for such simple dishes. For example, their fried squid was very similar to salt & pepper squid found at Asian restaurants, less some salt. Oysters were fresh, but I was only given one choice to choose from on both occasions. Service was excellent and restaurant ambiance was delightful. Great selection of wines. Overall, food was solid, seafood was fresh, and the view made up for the extra dollars.
