I come to Vancouver about once a month and stay at the Coast hotel in the west end whenever I do. The hotel does have a bar but I prefer to head down the street to the Calling when I need to get out. Nothing wrong with the hotel bar but when the neighborhood is this nice why not go somewhere with a view.
I have become a regular at the Calling over the last year. I see a lot of the same customers there every time I visit and I can see why. It's a very welcoming place. The staff always remember my name and the bartender always remembers what I drink. The food is good, the drinks are cold. It's very easy to feel comfortable and at home here. It's also a great place to catch the game.
Did I mention the view? Best sunset in the city!
I look forward to the Calling on every visit.

Bait 'n switch

Learning that the Monday long weekend was going to be a wet one, some friends decided that we should drink to our health Sunday night so one friend decided to give this place another visit after having a decent time before. For a long weekend there were surprisingly few busy bodies inside, only 2 other tables occupied.

The Collins, Margaritas and Jack & Cokes were strong in alcoholic taste but were inconsistently mixed, with our 2 lime margaritas coming in different glasses, while the Caesars were completely bland..Bloody Mary's. For whatever reason I found it odd the way the server kept asking us for top ups (and not the other tables) however once the bill came, we realized why she was so insistent. Our hefty bill of 8 drinks ended up almost double the "typical" price and when we looked more closely at the bill, it showed that all our drinks were double shots, though we never asked for them. We brought this up to our server though long story short the sympathy and apology was lost. We were wanting to order some food too but decided this place wasn't worth our time. We all angrily left the cash on the table after again finding out they don't accept Interac though credit cards were OK.

Our server appeared brain dead though she was quick to keep our glasses filled, albeit dishonestly. This is one of those places that looks good if you're walking by, but a completely numbing experience inside. It's not big and while there was plenty of space between tables it felt claustrophobic. The 2 washrooms are unisex which I felt was unusual. The friend who had been here before said it was decent enough but seems only busy during UFC events.

Avoid.

Great Ocean Views But Terrible Food
By Julieta2009 of Vancouver (12 Reviews)

The views here of English Bay are gorgeous. The service is inattentive. The pub wasn't very busy yesterday, but for some reason it took forever to get drinks and food. The dry ribs were ok but small in size. The burgers were tough and extremely boring. The bacon was so over-cooked, we had to send all three of them back. Reasonably-priced drinks. Would possibly go back only for a drink but never for food. It's too bad that so many ocean-front restaurants can't get it right.

For some reason, unless its for drinks, I find the food & service to be just mediocre.
Even from before Donnelly group bought it out, its always never achieved anything else then just "ok".
The views are great, the TV's and bar are wonderful.........actually to be honest, if you want better service, sit at the bar.........as for the food, i dont know why it never is very good, its just ok, plain jane food.

Nice little place in a good area

This is neat little place to bring a small group of people to chill. Has a modern bar flare to it. Food is quite decent, not amazing but still tasty. Typical pub menu (Burgers, Fries, Fish n Chips, Poutine, Salads, etc). They have a neat window seat which faces denman and you can drink/eat while you people watch. I've tried the Mushroom/Swiss/Bacon Burger which was THICK. I found the patty a little too thick which took away from the fixings. All in all, great place, staff are attentive, and value is there. I ordered a $26 bottle of wine and it was actually good. I would recommend it to anyone looking to find a nice spot to hang out.

Only a quick lunch at a local pub so not much to say about this place...it was great for what it is.
Good Service- they were very cheery and brought things propmtly
Good Specials - steak and fries for $9 - you can't go wrong.
Good Food - better than I expected, but sort of 'peppery'.
With summer on its way it also has Awesome views of English Bay.
