The name Calli means “Home” in Nahuatl, an ancient language in Mexico. Calli serves up traditional, fresh and healthy, home-style Mexican cuisine including well-known items like green, red and mole enchiladas, chicken and beef fajitas, tortilla soup, chicken with mole, stuffed poblano pepper, tortas, sopes, tacos, quesadillas and burritos.
Many Canadians have travelled to Mexico but few venture outside of the tourist zones especially created for them.
Calli on Davie St is the kind of place most Canadians wish they had found but even if they did they couldn't read the menu (!)
Luckily -as you can see from the website-the menu @ Calli is in English and once you've tasted the food you'll understand what people mean when they say 'authentic taste of Mexico'.
It's not loud or showy or drowned under goopy salty sauces-it's restrained and yet delicious.
Food cooked right is what I look for and the owners here have the experience to deliver consistently-service is excellent as well.
This is a little mom and pop place which prides itself on real Mexicam home cooking. It doesn't disappoint.
Everything is made to order including the pico de gallo and a guacamole to die for. The chicken enchiladas have the best tomatillo sauce I've ever had. The folks who own the place could't be more accommodating. They deserve a large clientele. Highly Recommended.
As a business owner I have had a few opportunities to present my products to groups of architects & designers, a couple of months ago I order "tortas" from Calli for a lunch & learn event and they were gone in a minute. If you are in downtown Vancouver and you feel like some yummy Mexican food, I would recommend to try these scrumptious sandwiches, you will not be disappointed.
As a mexican, I crave and love mexican food. I have tried many places, all claim to be mexican, but they are all `texmex` and overpriced.
I tried this Restaurant called Calli, it is located in the corner of Davie and Thurlow. My experience was incredible.
The place is owned by mexican people and the food is awesome. I had red chilaquiles with beans and sopes. The flavors brought me back home. They use the `real cheese`, not like the cheddar the so called mexican places use. No chimichangas or weird things like that.
The prices are very reasonable.
Im so glad I dont have to go the States each time I crave good mexican food.
Congratulations, Calli!!
