A funky restaurant popular with the 30 something and over crowd that has an all day brunch menu including several different types of eggs benedict.
The food was good but the staff here just slam cups, glasses and your food on the table when they bring it out. We got 1 refill on our coffee as the server rarely checked up on us.
At the end, I walked to the bar to pay (because we couldn't get the server's attention) and the server said to me "I don't know which table you are sitting at or who your server is"
I replied with: "I'm sitting right there and you are my server."
Good times for me. I left a tip, but I don't know why.
Have been going to Cafe Barney on Granville for nearly 10 years. Always loved it, service generally great, food and drink always great. Today was lack luster. It took nearly an hour for a cobb salad, and a smoked salmon bagel. We were not so bothered that those around us got their food ahead of us (even though they ordered far after we did) it was the attitude of the staff after we raised our concern. Blaming it on shift change, then on a computer problem. As tips are based on good service, we decided not to tipi as we felt we were poorly served. Here's the kicker they gave us attitude for our shitty tip! We have been long term customers and will not be back to the Granville location ever again, shame on Barney's and their pompous ways we thought better for them!! Thank god for the main street location!!
For some reason many people on here seem to be expecting a 5 star restaurant peopled by high fliers in business suits! It's not that kind of place. It has a "studenty" or "arty" vibe and there are pluses and minuses that come with that. The service can be a little slow but I have never known it to be rude and the food is always very good and reasonably priced. You are also never rushed or made to feel unwelcome. It's essentialy a bar that does great food, what's not to like?
I can't understand how this restaurant can be so popular after so many years of same ol', same ol'. The decor is tired and greasy, so is the menu, and the staff is tired and condescending. This place desperately needs an update of menu, decor and staff. I went in with a friend last weekend since swearing off the place 15 years ago after being snarled at by the staff one too many times. Sadly nothing has changed. I ordered coffee with my meal, which didn't come either before or during the meal. When I asked the server where it was I received a generous roll of the eye, and a curt "d'you still want it or what?" The art displays are amateurish and poorly curated, giving you nothing new or interesting to look at.
The only positive comment I can give this place is that, if you are on a budget, you will save money not having to shell out for a large tip.
I have eaten here today and food rocked but service really sucked.
Our waiter was busy chatting with co workers instead of serving.
Offered a coffee refill but never delivered until served the bill at which point asked again if we would like a coffee refill.
I sat in front of an empty plate for approximately 15 min.
Never asked if everything was "OK " with food after delivering it. Really poor customer service and that was the last time I have given this place a chance.
This could be a coinidence, but ever since the additional Caffe Barney opened on Main, the Granville service has gone seriously downhill. Many new servers, work slower, seem more interested in chatting with each other (or looking cute in a hat) than working and really don't seem to care. I'm a local who goes frequently for the good food (great Benedicts), but they could reduce their line-ups by simply having better trained and managed staff. Still worth a visit, but get your coffee next door, as it is the same owner. Coffee has also gone downhill and often tastes like they used the grounds twice to make a pot...weak coffee doesn't win friends!
Our Sunday brunch experience consisted of staff that ranged from being moderately hospitable to alltogether unfriendly (and unknowledgable), loud techno music and food which was just ok. Given the prime location of this spot, I would have expected more. No soy milk, which is pretty much a given in this town. And I was disappointed that the eggs were not free range.. I'm guessing that's not an issue for most people, but the only possibility it left me with was putting together some side dishes to fill a plate. Overall pretty disappointing.
On a recent solo visit I sat at the bar for brunch.
Once the bartender was finished chatting with his buddy, and fiddling with his music, he finally threw a dirty menu at me and said "coffee?". He poured a weak coffee, spilling it on the menu and my paper napkin. The food went to the wrong person so they had to make me another one (no apology). It arrived, a sloppy plate of overcooked mush with cold toast. When I asked for ketchup, barguy huffed "It's right in front of you", so I had to reach across the bar to a shelf and get it myself.
This is similar to EVERY time I've tried to eat here.
I've given this place 3 or 4 tries, and it continues to baffle me as to why it's lined up on weekends.
Is this area so short on casual restaurants that they are the only choice? Sad.
It's dirty, the service is SURLY at best (esp. the bar staff), and the food is sloppy slop.
I've tried AND lined up 3 times now for this popular South Granville eatery for breakfast. Unfortunately, the food is the same bad thing every time. Poorly cooked eggs, overcooked potatoes, flavourless omelettes and bennies. Don't even get me started on the coffee- probably the worst and weekest drip in town, and badly made capps and lattes too- what seems to be the problem here? Too busy? No knowledgeable staff? I appreciate the location, the effort and the cute waitresses but if I want a decent breakfast I think I'm better off almost anywhere else.
This 30 something will never come back. After over 5 visits to this overrated cafe really confirmed that there are no "off days" for service. Usually the wait staff have a bad attitude problem. They are consistently unattentive and disinterested. It's like it is beneath them to serve. Did not get order taken in a timely manner and left on the last visit. Waitress practically tossed the coffee cups/creamer on the table without a care.
Good enough food will not win me over unless management does a massive facelift on the attitude of this very unimpressive bunch of waitstaff.
I completely agree with Famished. The attitude problem with the waiters is pervasive, and is the reason I will never set foot in this place again. They are aloof, patronising, and rude. When I asked 'could you please tell me what this is', pointing to a beer on the menu I had never heard of, the waiter replied 'it's beer', voice dripping with sarcasm. Yes thank you for clarifying that. Obviously I meant where is it from, what kind of beer is it, or any scrap of information you may deign to impart. This was just the start of a long night of Attitude. Which the food and atmosphere do not make up for. Avoid.
I always enjoy Caffe Barney. Buffalo, chicken, lamb or beef they have THE BEST burgers in town. The rest of their menu is tasty too. Drinks as with everywhere are a tad pricey and they don't have debit. I will always go back for the food.
This is my favourite breakfast place to go to on a weekend morning. The service is quick, the food is delish, and the prices are right.
As well the cafe is cozy and warm with a huge skylight overhead. Bring your morning paper, grab a coffee/tea and enjoy your weekend.
Adept in the art of poaching, Barney's safe bets are anything benny. Try the Cajun to add some spice to your life. The cougars eating solo at the bar are generally quite tame...so feel free to play, maybe get batted around a little.
The atmosphere is great and the food is even better. I have been going here for two years now and it never disappoints. The food has gotten allot better with the new menus and the service is always great. I do not understand the bad reviews i have been going there for two years and never had one complaint. Like my bacon is bigger then the muffin like come on its bacon more is better. The food is excellent never had a mediocre meal and love the atmosphere. My baseball team comes in after every game and they give us a team rate which is awesome. I love Barneys and have not found another place that can hold a handle to this place. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for excellent food at a reasonable price.
My partner and I can here for brunch the other day. When we got our menus, he asked for a water and a mocha, and I asked for a tea. Our hot drinks came within a reasonable amount of time, but the waiter forgot his water. I had to ask for a new cup because there was a brown film on the inside of mine, which I was able to scrape away at with a spoon (to confirm it wasn't just coffee staining). The lady who replaced my cup moved my spoon form the dirty cup to the new one. WTF? I overheard the table next to us asking for a clean utensil, as well. Maybe they should be checking their dishes when they come out of the washer.
I had the eggs benny with bacon instead of ham. My food was lukewarm when it arrived. The bacon was about twice as long as the English muffins. It would have been nice if they'd cut it to fit so trying to cut and eat it wasn't such a hassle. The Hollandaise was lumpy - it looked like the egg had been scrambled, which indicates it had not been prepared correctly. The Benny tasted great but the temperature made it less palatable. The potatoes that came with did not appear to be seasoned at all.
My partner had the chorizo scramble. His was also lukewarm, and absolutely no attempt was made at presentation. It looked like food that had already been chewed. The salsa was cooked into the scramble instead of added after, which made for not only a damp scramble, but a soggy bagel underneath.
I would probably not come here again unless someone else was buying.
Best Brunch ever!
I come here every weekend with my friends. The weekend is not the same without having brunch here. I love it. Great service, and awesome food, rad music and artwork as well. The servers always remember us and treat us like family (Shannon, Shawn, Calvin, Paul). Daily food specials are great, and the kitchen is always fast. There should be more positive reviews about this place. Can't wait for brunch this weekend.
Barney's is by far my favourite local watering hole. I've been coming to Barney's anywhere between two and three times a week on average for the passed few years, partially because of proximity to my home but mostly because of the staff and food. It's great to walk into a place and have a bartender start pouring your usual drink as they greet you and ask how you've been. All the staff are diverse and interesting individuals with there own style and wit which truly brings the place to life and creates a fun and interactive dining experience. The kitchen is adept at dealing with busy crowds and always delivers with consistency and efficiency. The lunch and dinner food is generally your average pub fair but always done well, often interesting specials show up on the black board too so keep an eye out for that when you visit. The breakfast plates are fantastic overall and don't skimp on quantity which is becoming rare these days. All in all I say go check it out. I appreciate having a comfortable no nonsense pub, staffed by human beings (as opposed to the plastic robots you find at so many brand name places) close by. Yes sometimes it's loud and full and sometimes it's quiet but it's always welcoming and you can always expect a sincere smiling face to greet you.
Since I live in this area (Fairview) have tried out several places for brunch, and I always go back to Caffe Barney's, it's simply the best!
Sometimes it can be quite full and there is a wait time, but that's really the 'worst' that I experienced. The food makes it totally worth it, it's absolutely fantastic (eggs benedict, scramblers, seafood!!), the staff is welcoming additional requests to mix/match several dishes, and you can even order half sized food. The overall menu is outstanding.
They got brand new artwork last year (2012) which changes from time to time now, and which adds to the overall atmosphere. Caffe Barney's is showcasing and supporting many local artists, it's great to see so many stunning pieces of original artwork! Looking at older reviews from past years, it seems to have really improved over the last while!
Regarding the service, I always found it to be a very friendly, relaxed & casual atmosphere - which I appreciate very much - and not any of these your in-your-face servers. But I can see how some people may not like it, being accustomed to high pitch voices, overly bright smiles, and low cleavages (no offence ladies). I feel treated like a real person, by people who care.
It's very authentic and comfortable, and although it's quite full from time to time (weekends) with waiters being a bit busy I never feel forgotten or treated rudely at all!
They also have a patio in the back which is really quiet with some plants and umbrellas, the perfect brunch spot for a sunny weekend brunch!
I'd not go anywhere else!
When a friend suggested Caffe Barney for a brunch, I checked out the reviews and saw that food was great and service was poor. I don't take anybody's word as truth and decided to check it out for myself. We were all very pleased with the friendly staff and the wonderful food. It is a busy place and full of fun on the walls and faces of the folks eating and working there. Have a great time!
