I really enjoyed this place, solely because of the food. It's enough to make up for average service, a kind of bland interior and prices a bit more expensive than they could be.
But the food! Very delicious. Treat yourself to butter chicken with garlic naan if you've never tried Indian or are a rookie to it, and make sure to dip your naan into the sauce. The two dishes I tried (Butter Chicken and Chicken Tandoori) were both big enough to share, so my party of 2 were able to get two plates, both around $12. The naan is 2.50 for Garlic and 1.50 for regular, but I'd suggest the garlic.
The Chicken Tandoori comes sizzling on a hot plate and, even if you just get the half chicken as opposed to the full, is quite a lot of food. It's also extremely tasty.
For drinks, I had the Chai (which was meh) and the Mango Lassi (which was mmm).
There's really nothing else to say. Our server brought us rice we didn't order but when we informed him of the mistake he happily corrected it. A good experience, and I would go back if not for that there are very similar, equally delicious offerings closer to home.
I had been wanting to try Cafe Mumbai for some time now, and really happy that I did. I had the mango chicken and garlic naan. Flavors where amazing and chicken was cooked perfectly. Whoever was in the kitchen knows what they are doing. The decor was nice, pretty modern actually, very clean. Could be a little cozier with dimmer lights and curtains to hide the ambient street light, but that's just me... My bill came to $15 and change, I was very satisfied as I enjoyed my meal and the service I received. I am used to ordering the bread separately so I was not surprised that this was also the case, rice came with my dish and I had more than enough food. I will definitely go back.
My girlfriend and I went here for dinner recently, and we really enjoyed it. My girlfriend ordered the butter chicken, which was quite tasty, ad I ordered the chicken tikka, which they covered in masala sauce at my request (gotta have some sauce for dipping naan). My tikka masala was very good as well, but I ordered hot, and it was mild at best. The prices were fair, even with the addition of rice and naan (sold separately) compared to other Indian places we've tried. The restaurant itself is modest in size, but very cozy with nice decor. Service was solid, food was brought out quickly and the staff was very friendly. We plan on going back again for lunch as they appear to have a very good combination of entrees for around $11. Overall, tasty food and enjoyable experience.
I went to many Indian restaurants and i can say that this is a restaurant above the others for the taste. My only problem was that you have to buy the naan bread on the side, and the rice too (4$ for a little plate of rice, 1.50 for an individual portion of bread), call me fancy but when i have to start paying for the little details that cost nothing to make, i get a little upset. But for around 35$, you can feed two person very very well. Will go back for sure.
On a friday night, my friends and I needed to grab a quick bite before heading off somewhere. Considering the fact that it was already 9:30, there were not that many restaurants open in the area so we just decided to try the indian restaurant. I've had butter chicken from food court, but never actually been to a Indian restaurant so I was pretty excited
Ambiance: When you first walk in, the restaurant looks a little smaller than expected, but pretty nicely decorated with Indian themed pictures, ornaments and etc. They play Indian music which adds to the ambiance
Service: This white girl that took our order didnt have any expression on her face. And to be honest, not to be racist or to go along with streotypes, I felt like she didn't belong there. Maybe it was because she was unfriendly or had an expression of someone who just got slapped across the face when she was taking our order...I am not sure. I had few questions because it was my first time at a Indian restaurant and she answered in yes or no, it was not very helpful. PLUS there was this Indian guy who I assume to be the owner, he was kind of awakward too....
Food: I ordered Lamb curry and the rice, my friend ordered chicken curry and nann bread and my other friend ordered butter chicken with some more nann bread. We shared everything and I liked my lamb curry the best. There was lots of lamb pieces in the curry which was awesome, and the rice and nann bread was good too. Butter chicken was a little too buttery and sweet for my liking but maybe thats the way its suppose to be? Anyway, for the price, just th curry itself is 15dollars and it doesnt come with rice. To be honest, I thought that was kind of weird. It would make sense if curry was something that could be eaten by itself, but correct me if I am wrong, but curry is always eaten with rice or the nann bread, right? It's not that much but having to pay $5 for the rice and $2 for the nann bread on top of the curry...I thought it was kind of expensive. And...from the looks of it, I don't think Indian food is suppose to be expensive. But overall it was really delicious and I wonder if they do cheaper set menus during lunch time with curry AND rice OR nann bread
Value: With the 3 of us, the bill came to around $65, which is pretty good for dinner, but a little expensive from what i expected from a local Indian restaurant. And the owner guy who took our bill (because we all paid debit/credit card) he was being really awkward for some reason it made me feel so uncomfortable. It's like he doesnt know customer service? When you are standing there beside your customers when they are paying their bill, at least you can do is ask how the meal/food was. And when he took my friend's debit card to charge, he suddenly took the card behind the counter for some reason, my friend and I exchanged looks and we wonder if he was trying to copy the debit card? I guess we will have to wait and see.
I was visiting friends in town and I discovered Cafe Mumbai, which they'd never noticed even though they live right down the street.
I had Butter Chicken (12.95) with garlic naan (2.50). The portion was quite big, with lots of chicken and plenty of sauce. The naan was crispier than I like, but tasty. My friends had Chicken Saag (12.95)and Prawn Masala (14.95) and they really enjoyed both. The service was excellent - the staff were friendly and attentive and the food came quickly. The decor was nice and atmosphere pleasant and relaxing.
Overall, a great experience. With our three entrees and naans, rice, poppadoms with mango chutney, and two cokes, the bill came to a reasonable $63. I'm heading home but my friends will definitely be back for more!
Decided to get some takeout the other night.
Ordered Lamb Vindallo and Chicken Biryani, with some Veg Pakora to start.
While I should have remembered, the order taker didn't ask if I wanted any rice with the vindallo and also didn't ask how spicy I would like it. (Perhaps I shouldn't expect this, but I have fallen accustomed to be asked this).
Food:
Pakora's were very good. No complaints at all.
Chicken Biryani was very fragrant, and chicken a little over cooked. Overall good.
Lamb Vindallo was disappointing, 3 pieces of lamb in what tasted like lighty seasoned tomato paste.
Naan bread was similar to grocery store types.
Value:
Not great, prices are OK, but I would prefer more quality over quantity.
Ambiance:
Looks nice, I was only in there for a couple of minutes. But it was nice enough that I think I will return for a dine in experience.
Some room for improvement, and I think I will give them another shot. Just try something different on the menu!
We had heard about this restaurant from friend so we decided to check it out. Also, we really wanted to eat somewhere nearby and support local business...
We started out with a Snack platter to start, which was great. A nice variety of really tasty little appys. A good value at 10.95 and they were all good.
For our mains we had the Lamb Curry and Palak Panneer. Both were tasty, but the lamb was definitely the favorite. It was very flavourful and obviously made from scratch. With rice, naan and a couple of beers each the whole thing came to $60 for two people, which I thought was a great deal.
We'll definitely be going back.
Overall an unexciting restaurant with quite good food. The menu is everything you would predict for an Indian restaurant in Vancouver - nothing adventurous to be found here. Most items run around $14, which adds up when you get enough dishes. Portions are fine. It seems much better as a take-out restaurant - prices come down, no waiting and the big portions pay off.
Absolutely Delicious. I've been to Cafe' Mumbai about 6 times so far and was Always satisfied.
The Shahi Paneer and Butter Chicken are to die for. Tasty, creamy, full flavors, cooked perfectly. BTW, the panner dish is veg. Fantastic Naan, rice. Everything I've had was delicious. Great atmosphere. Great service. For about $35, for two, you will have leftovers....but not the first time you eat there :-) I've still yet to taste the chai. Loved the lamb curry as well. mmmmmm.... I'm due for another visit!
I've been to this restaurant 4 times and I am rarely dissapointed. I find the food has a lot more flavour than other Indian restaurants I've been to in Vancouver. I especially like that the vegetarian dishes seem less oily than typical restaurants. I especially like the spinach with cheese and the Dal Makhani, and the eggplant curry dish is very good too. I've also had the Lamb Vindaloo, which was the biggest hit at our table, and the tandoori chicken, which was really tender and flavourfull. There are some dishes that I didn't like as much: the mint curry chicken (or was it cilantro curry?) my partner loves but I don't really care for. And the mustard greens curry that we had last night tasted burnt and no one at our table ate it.
All in all, its a great value and tasty local neighbourhood restaurant that I will return back to again and again.
I enjoy every visit I have had to this wonderful restaurant. The owner works hard and runs the floor often while the food is always plentiful and delicious. The price seems above par but once you eat the food you won't soon forget it. I strongly recommend the chicken naan and the Lamb Vindaloo although to each their own. Thanks for the upgrade in Indian Cuisine at a reasonable price.
Enjoy!
