Cafe Katzenjammer is a cozy German cafe decorated with German movie posters from the past century serving a menu of tradtional, authentic German cuisine such as schnitzel and sausages.
We have had two good dinners recently (2011!) at the Katzenjammer, and I am prompted to write this review because we want more people to enjoy the food there and consequently the restaurant to be open more!!!
On recent visits to Vancouver we found it mysteriously closed --- and NOT by the City! The food is super and very well-priced. We totally agree with the previous good reviews.
The ambiance is northern European with wooden floors, the kitchen in complete view, comfortable lighting and old movie posters from the belle epoch of German cinema. If you are lucky, you can get a table by the window and watch the passing scene on Tenth Avenue and the hoi polloi pack into the noisy franchise restaurant across the road ...
We had half pints of import beer for $5 (on special) and ordered Jaeger Schnitzel with two optional side orders of potato pancakes and sauerkraut all for $18. The mushroom sauce on the (very tender) Schnitzel was very rich and delicious. The potato pancakes did have quite a hint of nutmeg, but I like that, so not problem for me. My dining companion was enjoying his beer and Schnitzel so much he didn't notice.
Dessert looked good but the portions are very big so we did not have room.
Our only complaint is that the Katzenjammer is not open often enough!
Presently it is closed on Monday and Tuesday like many good restaurants in this neighbourhood.
Wednesday and Thursday the hours are from 5:00 pm to 8:30 pm.
Friday and Saturday it stays open to 9:30 pm.
Brunch (and smaller portions of the entrees) is served on Saturday and Sunday.
It's virtually impossible to find a German restaurant in Vancouver. I was delighted to find German beer, brats & sausages & scnnitzel at an insanely affordable price on the westside. The portions are large and just delicious at a mere cost of $30 (tip not indluded) for two entres & half litre of Gr beer.
This is a little cafe, but it's quite the gem. It is a small cozy cafe with good food, nice ambience & cheerful service. Quite the little gem
A group of us swim at UBC, and after a good workout, we're famished. A plate full of stick-em-to-your-arteries sausages is precisely what we crave.
I always have trouble choosing the sides, because I want them all. But their red cabbage is excellent, and so is their pan fried potatoes.
I always end up driving so haven't had the pleasure of combining the sausages with beer (and they've got more than just sausages, I just happen to like them).
Service has always been good, food is prepared fresh for you (you can see them sizzling away on a grill), and the bathrooms are clean.
It's a bit out of the way if you don't live on the west side of Vancouver, but it's a nice little community restaurant.
I've been here several times for lunch and once for dinner. Fabulous place with real home cooked German food. The schnitzel with mushrooms and gravy for lunch with a beer is just awesome, at a very good price to boot.
hightly recommended. I just wish it was busier a little more often and that would help pick up the ambiance, but overall it's clean, service is good, food is great, and I dont have much to criticize!
