We went over the long weekend

There isn't a updated review so I thought I write about my dining on Saturday. Very good seafood and appetizers. Sophisticated ambiance. Appealing waitresses that the guys really liked. The atmosphere is very nice, and the service was excellent. It has delicious seafood, in decent portions, which is important. The price is pretty much what you can expect for the food from such an establishment. Wine list is pricy but some good choices.
Good desserts. Worth a visit--and revisit.

I took my 2 young boys last Sunday for lunch. I was surprised the restaurant was not even 30% full. I usually have to wait during the weekday lunch time. The hostess brought us to a large booth and had plenty of room for my 2 boys to stretch out and elbowing each other. The ambiance is very modern and it definitely made me feel more relaxed.

The food we ordered was done pretty good. I ordered the halibut soft tacos and it was tasty. The fish was not try and had plenty fillings. My older boy ordered the quesadilla with yam fries. It must have been good because he finished it before I could finish one of the two tacos I had. The yam fries were the best. He had to keep it from me by putting a fry into his mouth first and then dipping the sauce to smoother over the rest of his yam fries. I guess this is how the animals mark their territories.

My younger son had the chicken strips with regular fries. The chicken was nice and crusty on the outside and moist inside. He couldn't finish because there were 5 or 6 pieces and each piece was about 5" long.

The best part about this meal was seeing our waitress handling herself professionally. She accidentally dropped her tray of glasses and dishes while she was already at the dishwashing station. At first, she looked a little upset, but when she came around to our table, she was cheerful as if she didn't have the little accident. She was able to keep the negative feelings to herself and not pass on to her customers. However, I was not pleased to see her colleague not helping her clean up the mess. She had to drag out the broom and the mop by herself. Other servers were carrying out their own business as if they didn't even notice. I felt like talking to the manager to encourage some team spirit. With one or two more people helping, the cleanup would have been much faster.

The value was alright for a family meal, considering the quality is better than other places offering kids menu.

i went to this restaurant and I especially enjoyed the mini burgers and the artichoke quesidila was excellent also. The service was nice and the bathrooms are very clean and fancy. For dessert you have to try the key lime pie. When i go there i like to purchase a ton of appetizers or meals and share them with a large group of friends.

Over the past 4 years I have eaten here many times and was always happy with the food and service. Ever since the new " food architect" took command things have changed. The food is not as good as it was, the portions are smaller, the prices have increased and service has declined. On my last visit ( and it will be my last ) the serivce was terrible, we waited 15 minutes to place our orders and finally the floor manager took our order after noticing we had been ignored by the wait staff. Our server then brought us some water delivered on a tray filled with dirty dishes and said nothing more to us. When lunch finally arrived it was a disappointment, the taste had changed for the worse and the portions had shrunk. The server continued to ignore until it was time to bring the bill. When a rstaurant like the Cactus Club charges an average of $15.00 + excluding drinks customers deserve better than this. I won't be returning anytime soon.

Feenie's Signature Dishes

I haven't been to a CC for a while but stopped by this location on a Friday. Nice to see that it had about a dozen Feenie signature dishes. All quite interesting and I tried the ravioli with sage and pine nuts. Very good combination and for the price, mid teens, quite reasonable. Server was very accomodating as there was a baby in the group. Would go again to try the other RF signature dishes.

I've come to this location regularly over the years and it remains to be one of the restaurants where the service is consistently good.

Now that Rob Feenie has joined the helm he has his own signature dishes in the menu, which I've taken the liberty to try since it's been introduced.

Their menu is fairly diverse in selection and since Feenie's inception it seems as if they're trying to cater to a more upscale casual diner.

Their sliders are a tasty appetizer item for those wanting to satisfy their burger cravings, whether you want to share them or not. Their Tuna Poke is a refreshing fusion of ahi tuna, shrimp, tropical fruit, nuts and creamy avocado. We then settle into the basics for a chain: pasta, steaks, chicken/ribs, a few fish dishes and a handful of tex-mex items.

I've had a few of the Feenie signatures including the Calamari Sandwich, Butternut Squash Ravioli, The "Burger", Spinach Salad and the BBQ Duck Club. None of the dishes stood out; typical dishes with unusual twists sums it up. The BBQ Duck Club jazzes up a classic with bbq duck and prosciutto nestled between 2 pieces of nut fruit bread. Sweet and savoury although not a particular favourite of mine. The "Burger" puts all your favourites into a bun: juicy beef patty, sauteed mushrooms, aged cheddar and cured bacon. I would've liked it if they used a nice sourdough instead of a hamburger bun for their Curry Calamari Sandwich and it was a bit heavy on the mayo.

Service is excellent the odd time but always consistently good and better. Servers are amicable and professional. Ambience and decor is casual and welcoming for a good time.

One of the better chains out there in terms of variety of menu choices and consistently good service and atmosphere. Always worth a visit here and there.

This place went downhill!

This cactus club used to be my favorite restaurant, the food was good, service was pleasant...not sure what happened. We were briefly greeted with an effortless hello when we arrived. Then the hostess went back to chatting with her colleagues. We had a party waiting for us so I called to find our friends. The minute we sat down the server asked if we were ready to order. I had just sat down and haven ‘t even picked up the menu yet! How the heck am I suppose to know what I want to order? We ordered a Caesar Salad, the dressing was bland and the salad was overall dry. Messing up on a caesar salad, I thought that was just impossible for Cactus Club, since its just romaine and dressing. The butternut squash raviolli was okay, nothing special. The yam fries were really greasy, seems like they haven ‘t changed the oil that they use for a long time! There was a dish missing, so we waited and asked the server when it was coming, she said it was coming in a rude manner and never came back to check up on us. By the time everyone had finished their appys, I decided it was time to ask again, she did not apologize and just said its coming again. She then brought out the chicken tenders for the person that was sitting there the whole evening, the chicken tenders were burnt and over cooked and dry. HORRIBLE!

This is the only "hip" restaurant in the neighborhood so I might go there to get a Yaletown feel. Unfortunately, the food sucks. My steak was tough and hard to swallow. The brown rice was a heavy clump on tasteless starch. On the positive side, the beer was cold and the waitress was friendly and easy on the eyes. Oh yeah, that table in the corner near the patio door is good size for ten-year olds, but I was practically spooning my dining partner....and he was across the table from me!! Forget Feenie; get some real cooks in here.

Went for a late lunch on Saturday with a friend around 2 PM. The place wasn't busy but we had to wait in the lobby for almost 10 minutes so they could clean a table on the back patio. When we finally got seated the waitress was AWOL; we later learned someone had spilled a full drink on her. Anyways the host ended up taking our order but throughout the meal the service was scattered and it totally wasn't a relaxing lunch. My friend had to wait about 15 minutes for a coffee refill; apparently they were brewing a fresh pot. How could you run out of coffee in such a large restaurant. And then once the coffee finally came it was another long wait for more cream. I had a soggy Cajun burger and the waitress made no mention of an extra charge if you opted for a salad instead of fries. Anyways it was a bit of a fiasco; won't be rushing back anytime soon.

So me and my father had to run a few errands on Broadway and decided to try out the cactus club. We took a look at the menu and went "Kind of pricey but oh well, should be worth it" and we were wrong ... I had a virgin strawberry margarita, I couldn't finish it because it was too sour. We ordered the "kalamari" and "spaghetti w/ scallops & shrimp". I took one bite of the kalamari and didn't enjoy it. Their style and just how it tasted wasn't good at all. The spaghetti was overpriced ($19) and definitely not worth it, the sauce was just boring and thin. I could make it at home myself, if not better! The server was nice about it and took it off the bill (phew...)

Honestly, you'd have a better experience at Gigi's Pizza & Spaghetti a few blocks away from them. The spaghetti there was far superior and for on 6.95 as well as the kalamari is always satisfactory.

I have been to the two Cactus clubs on Broadway many times.

I am always impressed with the speed and quality of food. In particular the food from the test kitchen at Broadway and Ash,

What I can never understand is the totally discrepancy in the level and quality of the service between the two.

At Ash the service is either satisfactory or deplorable... WTF?!?

At the Granville location the service is consistently above average.

Cactus Club... Please help us...

I end up going here quite a lot for lunch as reps find it the place to go in my neighbourhood!

The only thing I can rave about is the AHI tuna appy, it is so yummy! I order it everytime we go.

I also one time had a great NY steak with mashed potatoes, but on most occasions the steaks have just been ok. I would never, personally, pay to eat here...burgers have always been just average, salads are not bad...

Haven't been since Feenie's been on board, but we'll see...

The Best Entree Salads Hands Down

I avoid chain restaurants but whenever I want a big salad I go to CC. Not a fan of the trampy servers but I guess that suits most of the clientele. The edamame and Sezchuan beans are yummy starters. They have 4 or 5 entree salads to choose from and the Raincoast Greens is really good. The last time I had it it was amazing. Crispy spiced pecans, delicious strawberries (usually not a fan of the all too common berries in salad) a whole avocado-sliced, egg, peppers and the perfect amount of dressing. Yummy!! Also, another reason to support them is all their fish is Oceanwise- approved by the Aquarium and sustainable. If only a sushi restaurant would do the same.

Pretty Good

I had heard several decent to good things about this place so when we made arrangements to go I had to have all the recommended items, bellini, which I was told was better than Milestones, the wing special before 6:00 pm and the burgers. All were pretty good. I was expecting better and more wings, but they were not bad. Probably won’t order them again. The Bellini was a nice smooth consistency, not too granulated with a nice distinct peachy flavour. Better than Milestones? Probably. The side Caesar salad had just the right amount of dressing and freshly grated cheese for me. The burger was nicely done, juicy and substantial with the right amount of condiments. I’m not partial to veggies and pickles on my burger but I’ll eat them separate if they are really good but these ones were a bit substandard so I put them to the side. The flavour of the pickles were just vinegary not tasty and the tomatoes weren’t quite ripe so they were just watery. My friends had the cedar plank salmon and they were pleased with their choice. The waitress was nice enough to warn us the dessert platter was made up of very small samples but since we were stuffed we ordered that and shared. The chocolate lava cake had a nice slight crunchy texture on the outside and the inside was filled with warm fudgey goodness. I’ve had better cheesecake but that’s ok. The apple pie was good too. The ambiance was nice, not as loud as we had anticipated, and we were most surprised and impressed with how clean and nice the washrooms were.

No we do not want coffee

Last night we dropped into the Cactus club and despite parking problems in the area had another solid Cactus Club experience . The decor at this location is terrific and the food was very good although the soft fish taco's had maybe 3- 4 very small pieces of fish and really was just a lettuce and tomato taco in reality . The only strange part of the meal was the arrival of a waiter at our table with a cup of coffee and after telling him we did not want coffee he insisted the coffee was indeed for us and he was about to leave it until another waiter informed him he had the wrong table .Despite the confused Mr. coffee the staff is very friendly and we had a great evening .

Missing Waitress

So i come to this location often, the service is really good besides the hostess being snobby, the atmosphere is nice, relaxing and fun. Yesterday was a little strange, the waitress took our order we saw her once after that she was gone, without any warning, usually if they leave they tell you who your new server will be. We had no waitress in our section there was no one to serve us, after our meal we had to wait 20 mins to find someone to get our bill, and still no sign of our waitress. She was really good while she was there though. I will definatly come back to this location

The bf and I were in the mood to taste-test, and were up for steak. He ordered the chargrilled steak rare; I got the pasta alfredo.

Service was attentive and with a smile. The Caesar salad has a wonderful garlic taste to it, but not overpowering.

The steak tasted like half its description; chargrilled. I felt like I had just licked the grill it cooked on without a hint of Montreal steak spice (the other half of the description). It was, however, cooked to the desired rare stage, very tender, and extremely juicy...probably its saving grace.

The pasta was overcooked; not al dente, just mushy. The mushrooms in the alfredo sauce added a nice texture to offset it, fortunately.

Would definitely go back for the key lime pie. I think it's new, since it was on an insert inside the menu. It's not that cheesecake kind, so you get a lot of fresh lime taste with fresh whipped cream on top, and a nice, sugary graham wafer crumb crust for crunch. Took that horrid burnt grill taste from the steak out of my mouth.

Sometimes change is good...and sometimes it is not. Cactus Club recently disposed of the best thing on their menu which was the affordable 7 oz Blackened Creole steak. Best steak in the country. I was devastated. Good looking waitresses only go so far. Sure there is still the more expensive $20 something Blackened Creole steaks, but who can afford to buy them often? Lets hope they bring this legendary classic back.

This is probably one of the best chains in Vancouver for this type of food. The restaurant is very cool looking, service is generally pretty good and the food is above par. Contrary to what other reviewers would suggest, this is not a 5 star restaurant. This is a fun place to go with friends and family, have a few drinks, eat some good food and look at the hot, and usually plastic staff.
