Since 1984 C-Lovers Fish & Chips has been serving fish & chips and other seafood produced in their open concept kitchens. Only the best quality, freshest ingredients are used like hand selected Alaskan halibut or our locally grown farm fresh kennebec potatoes.
It was Labour Day and stopped by C-Lover's for some Fish & Chips so I can enjoy while sitting at English Bay. Here is their report card:
Service: B- , For a takeout order, it was definitely on the long side. I was standing for my order for over 12 min. Not sure why it should take so long when all the guy has to do is dump some battered fish into hot oil. In any case, my fish didn't get dropped into the oil until I had already been standing for over 8 min. Wrapped my order in wax paper then newspaper (nice). However, they forgot to package napkins and forks. Thinking back, there was a stand where I could have gotten that, however, I think it is common courtesy for them to TELL me to get my own napkins and condiments if they aren't going to pack it for me. No lemon wedge was given to me. They also charged me 99 cents for tartar sauce, which other places give for free.
Food: C+ , Very average and pedestrian tasting fish and chips. The positives are it came hot, the fish was moist and seemed fresh. Negatives are that the fries were undercooked (it was a deep yellow color instead of golden brown and crispy, 2 more minutes in the fryer would have solved that), the fish batter fell right off the fish as soon as you bit it (did not pat dry the fish before putting it in dredge then batter), the fish batter was only 5/10 on a crispyness scale (should be around a 7-8 IMO), and the fries were severely underseasoned with salt (you can add salt afterwards but it should be added straight out of the fryer or else it won't stick).
Grade: C+ , Overall C-Lovers barely gets a passing grade. When you make something as simple as Fish & Chips, it has to be PERFECT. This was far from it. It's OK if you just want a quick bite near English Bay, however, don't expect it to compare to some of the better Chippery's in town. I've also heard that this location is especially worse than the others, but I haven't been to the others to compare. I won't go back anyways, there are better options nearby (Raincity Grill also does a takeout fish n chips for $10, and doesn't charge for tartar sauce).
