Budgies serves massive sized burritos and tacos for reasonable prices with your choice of tofurkey sausage, roasted potatoes or chipotle tofu. All items can be made vegan by substituting dairy with guacamole at no extra charge.
I was driving up Main, and was hungry. Maybe fancied a Torta at that donut place on Knight, and turned up Kingsway. I see "Budgies Burritos" and stopped in... about 5 minutes later I'm walking out the door with a 10" burrito wrapped in foil. This is not really a hang out and dine in kind of joint but that being said if I had time I would gladly have eaten in just to see who else came through the door. Interesting neighborhood.
Yes, it's vegetarian. Yes it's $7 for a 10". If you're looking for a hot gooey filling, this is not it. It is however delicious, and fast, and straightforward. They are very friendly, even after I tried walking in the door that opens off the kitchen instead of the actual front door of the restaurant. I had a great lunch and will be back next time I'm driving that main/kingsway corridor.
I love this place!! Their service is fast and the staff is always very friendly.
Their burritos come in 10 and 12 inches. I myself prefer the 10 inch Jhonny O.
I think it comes with Mexican rice, salsa, sour cream, jalapenos, cheese and some more stuff. Its delicious. I have it every week and still cant get enough of it.
The ambiance is nothing special, not the best. You can tell its a hipster place with the kind of posters on the wall. I dont mind it all. But what i do mind is the loud music. I like to eat my food in peace . Music is good as long it isn't too overwhelming and loud. That's a bummer. But overall its great place to fill your tummy at good price.
I have a simple rule when eating food: if its not meat, its not a meal. So its probably a good thing that I didn't read the reviews before going here as I would have realized this was a vegetarian burrito joint and probably never tried it.
The place is very small and has creepy, kitchy velvet art on the walls. I was going to leave after reading their menu on the wall but decided to try it. I ordered the Henry which was actually pretty good. I probably won't be going back because of the whole meat-less thing, but I did enjoy my burrito.
Never been to a vegetarian restaurant before, but my sister insisted that I try theses burritos and Tortilla chip soup.
Wow. I was kicked in the face with flavor and with the burrito. The Tortilla soup was fantastic, a bit salty, but i wouldn't want it any other way. The only thing I didn't care for was when my chips got soggy in the soup.
The options for going completely vegan are great, all organic drinks to choose from. Very friendly people, and our food was brought to us.
The place itself.... well, I would have missed it if I didn't know what I was looking for. We sat in the lower part of the place, which reminded me of someone's basement, which was kinda nice it's own way. Lots of pictures looking at you was kinda off putting. Very unique dining experience in my opinion.
I will defiantly be coming back, I was so stuffed from one burrito that I didn't bother eating dinner that night!
I am that bald headed duo-rag wearing veggie eating satanically tattooed punk.Me and the Girlfriend Love the Henry Its probably the best burrito I have eaten in Vancouver.I have tried all the other ones,They were good! But The Henry takes the cake..The Tofu-Turkey is a nice touch,Has lots of flavor/very filling For its price.I am there twice a week sometimes more, I Love it that much
Although the atmosphere is quite funny, I found the food here to be rather disappointing, given the hype I'd heard. None of the vegan burritos I tried were particularly good, just heavily laden with beans and rice and bread. Nothing particularly spicy, sour, fresh, or remarkable in any other way.
I love this place!! They do one thing and do it well - flawlessly in fact. The burritos are huge and delicious, and they are renovating to make the place bigger. The staff are cute and friendly. My favourite is the Jame-dog buritto, which has galicky potatoes in it. They can make anything vegan by subbing the cheese and sour cream and stuff out for delicious guacamole. I love it!!
I stop by this place every time I'm near Main and Broadway. The burritos are huge albeit more expensive than your average Taco Time fare, not that I'm complaining. Try the Henry burrito with soy sausage, it's fantastic. No complaints about the service, I always get my food and I'm on my way. There's not much space here so I haven't sat down to eat and listen to the melancholy indie music the staff love to play.
I stopped by here last night wanting something filling for cheap. I got the tofurkey burrito and my boyfriend got the bean one (I forget the names) .
First of all, nothing was seasoned! The rice tasted like steamed rice, the guacamole like butter and the beans were overcooked and bland. My boyfriend claimed his burrito tasted like "a variety of slime" as the chipoitle (sp?) mayo and salsa were bland. I got the spicy salsa and it didn't taste like anything! I had to drown everything in the hot sauce they had (which I think might have been watered down as it wasn't spicy at all). My boyfriend didn't even finish his, later blaming the cheese which "tates even worse than vegan soy cheese". How do you mess up cheese?
The staff was nice enough (the cashier totally ignored us, but one of the cooks got her attention, and they were chatty and pleasant overall). The decor was... grandma's house but cohesive. I guess it's good value if you like the food, but I didn't hence the "1".
I dont think I'll be back.
I eat here quite often as it is quite convenient. This is one of the mainstay "hipster" joints and you can often see young indie rockers loitering outside with their skateboards sending text messages. The food is quite good, 100% vegetarian and cheap. They're also quite willing to make any modifications to your order. The down side is sadly, the staff and ambiance. It's good to see young people making a go of a business, but in true hipster fashion the staff are much more concerned with being cool than being professional. Even the simplest orders are often made incorrectly and there is a 50/50 chance you'll get the correct change back if you don't pay with a $10 bill. One of my pet peeves in restaurants is loud music. There isn't a lot of room to sit in here but even if there was I wouldn't - the music is often so loud that miscommunications abound. With all these problems I still keep coming back as the food itself is good and the value is outstanding.
To be honest, my motivation in writing this review is to counteract some of the more negative ones posted here. That said, I have tried to be objective and fair in my ratings.
The food is great, and the prices are great. My favourite burrito is probably the Jamedog (with roasted potatoes!), but this is possibly just because my name is James. Who knows? It's tasty.
The hipster staff, who many have complained about, can be a bit scatterbrained at times, but they have never been rude, and their chill attitude and sense of humour completely makes up for it. Maybe it would be off-putting in a fine dining situation--but it's a casual burrito place! Just right.
It's pretty tight in there; often I've wanted to sit down, but it has been full. So usually it's the sort of place I drop by and get something to go.
I've been meaning to go here ever since I moved to the mount pleasant area in January, and today was finally the day! Very cute little hole-in-the-wall place... menu is all veggie with vegan options aswell, but from what I saw today, they don't just get the "typical" veggie crowd (I'm usually part of this group, so I hope nobody is offended by this lol!) The burritos are huge, and run from about 5 - 7 dollars. They sell taco's, quesadilla's and some sort of taco soup aswell. I'll definetly be back to try some of these items!
A couple things could be improved with this place....(nobody's perfect, right?)
- It could use a very VERY good cleaning
- The menu board says any orders of 30$ or more are subject to 10% gratuity. I'm rarely in agreement with these autograt policies, ESPECIALLY in a place that mainly does takeout!
Overall very good deal, good food, and friendly staff!
Well, it looks like a bit of a hole in the wall and screams hipster hangout, but the burritos are huge & delicious. I also find the counter attendants to be quite friendly. Burritos don't take long to make, so the food is fast and convenient. It's also quite healthy and you can opt for vegan versions (guacamole instead of cheese).
I've also tried the tacos and they're quite large and filling.
Bang for your buck, for sure.
I eat at Budgie's a couple of times a week. Tasty, filling, and nutritious lacto vegetarian and vegan burritos and a good selection too. They have Blue Sky Soda which is also a plus.
Some of the staffers are pretty cool and are fun to chat with. But there are also some seemingly passive aggressive weirdos that work there too. Ah well. Worth visiting regardless of occasional bad vibes, plus the price ( $7 ) is better than most fast food places.
Perhaps I'm a hipster local who hangs outside of Budgies text messaging but I LOVE Budgies. I still don't get amazing service either but come on its Budgies. By the sounds of some of these reviews I can just picture a customer coming in with a grumpy face thinking they don't fit in because they're not a "hipster local". You'd have to be insane to expext 5 star service here. I crave it. It's cheap and delicious what more could you ask for. It's definitly worth a visit!!!
I submitted a review for this restaurant yesterday, and it was removed. I can understand that because I was livid and used a lot of harsh words. But I still think my opinion should be heard, so here is a revised version. I used to eat at Budgies all the time, but I won't be eating here again. Not because the food is bad, but because the people who work there are always totally rude (see below review, and you will know exactly how I have felt). I am tired of these main street hipsters and their bad attitude. From now on I will go to Taco Del Mar when I want a burrito. I used to support this business because it was small, local and grass roots. But if you happen to wander in here and you get treated poorly, don't say I didn't warn you. Also, I have been served in the summer time by the girl with the ultra hairy pits, and even though that's not my bag, and I think it's kind of gross, that didn't detract me. I will say, however, that the same girl was pretty rude to me, and I'm a really nice person. I tip pretty big (most of the time if I have the cash). But I have never been in there when the staff wasn't rude. The last straw was yesterday when I walked there from my workplace (Main & Terminal) for a yummy burrito, stood in line for ten minutes, and the girl behind the counter looked right past me and asked the guy behind me in line what he wanted. Like, what was I doing there? I just walked out, and I will NEVER go back. These workers (who are probably part owners too) are worse than the Soup Nazi when it comes to service. They just don't give a shit. Well, I don't give that much of a shit about where I get a burrito either. They're not so good that I don't care about being treated poorly. Seriously, they're just burritos. They're big, but so are the mondo burritos as TDM. Whatever. Never again.
ignore the previous comments about the ambience and go for the amazing burritos. the only detractor to this place is that it's slightly off the beaten path but well worth the short skip from main street. budgie's is kitschy, grass roots and the smallest little gem of a place that shouldn't be overlooked even though you could easily pass it by if you were too stoned too otherwise notice it. the place is modest but fun. sadly the menu limited but is likely the reason why the food at hand is so darn tasty. i haven't had a burrito as good as this outside of new york city's 'burritoville' outlets. the tortillas are soft and flavourful and offer more taste than the usual communion wafer-style flats that have become standard fare at most 'texmex' type restos. both the black and re-fried beans are robust and meaty even though the fare is all vegetarian with vegan options. i sampled two of three homemade salsas both of which were plump with taste and freshness...the chipotle was perfectly applied and not overbearing and the cilantro lent a noteable counterbalance to the smokey pepper. my only criticism (suggestion!) is that the rice was a bit dehydrated and tired and would be better replaced with the nutty taste of short grain brown instead of the gringo white grain variety. all in all budgie's is fantastic for what you get. the burritos are generous and filling and exceptionally well priced and the service lady was friendly, too.
I work in the area and have had eaten there several times. Food is always good; fresh ingredients and all vegetarian, gotta love that!! The burrito's are huge, like 2lb, really heavy and filling! You get your moneys worth for sure! I just ate there today with by BF and now they have smaller and bigger sizes (before they only had the bigger sizes)
I have never gotten sick from eating there and the staff have always worn gloves and everything is very clean. Will contiune to go and suggest you do it! Cheers!
I wish they had more types of veggies available to flavour the burritos, but the Mr Jones is tasty at $5.50, and if you can't handle lactose they will switch your cheese and sourcream for guacamole or extra salsa!
So many vegetarian options... All full of protein and tasty! where else can you have lunch and a snack or a giant lunch for $7 including tax?
The two girls working behind the counter did wear gloves and had hair tied back and clean aprons when I was there on a Thursday lunchhour.
And that's how I order my Johnny-O, my favourite at Budgies. I absolutely love the crazy garage sale style of decor they have going on. It keeps the conversation at table flowing and makes for some great fb photos.
I also wanted to add that I don't get the disdain for the hipster service staff. I'm a squeaky clean preppy casual girl and have never had my order made wrong, been rude to or ignored, or received the wrong change. If anything I appreciate the laid back nature of the staff and have joked around with them several times.
Budgies is definitely my favourite place to hit for a burrito.
