inconsistent food and service

We went for lunch about a month ago and had a couple of sashimi bento boxes. The boxes arrived fairly quickly and the salmon and tuna sashimi pieces were very large, tasted fresh, ice cold & had a very creamy texture. The chicken teriyaki was good too. But this time we went for an early dinner around 5:30 pm on Canada Day, the place was mainly filled with younger people, perhaps locals, so we sat ourselves down. The girl who took our order did not smile and looked very mad or something, seriously. Usually you get tea with meals but all she gave us was cold water after I asked for it. I usually substitute the included California roll with the vegetarian yam roll instead as don't like avocado. We've eaten here for about 6 times now and that has never been a problem but this time she said oh that will be an extra dollar. I told her we had just eaten here in May and ordered the exact thing last time but she said NO! whatever.. So the teriyaki chicken was super dry, probably overcooked, not moist like it usually is and when I bit into a piece of tuna sashimi, there was some kind of white muscle in it as I tried to chew it but it had the consistency of chicken tendon or something? so I had to pull several strands of it out of it as too chewy to digest .. also the sashimi wasn't as cold as it usually is, it was just room temperature. The salmon was better but not by much. the only decent thing in the box was the 4 pieces of tempura. When we asked for the Styrofoam boxes for the rest of the food to go, the other waitress asked 1 box or 2? What a stupid question! We had 2 bento boxes so why would you even mix 2 people's food into 1 box? It was weird but on several occasions I looked at her she also did not look happy at all to be there. The food and atmosphere was so different this time than the times we were there before.. Maybe there was a different chef that day as it was a holiday? maybe we'll just stick to going there for lunch, not dinner and see if we get friendlier servers and better food the next time??

excellent sashimi in bento box

We had lunch here today when it opened at 11:30 am and sat ourselves down. Its just a little restaurant and the atmosphere is okay. They have lunch special bento boxes for $6.99 which is really good value as the portion size is pretty decent. We both had the chicken & sashimi (4 pieces) bento boxes for $10.99 which consists of teriyaki chicken over a bed of rice, assorted tempura (1 prawn & a few vegy pieces), The tuna and salmon sashimi were very cold, fresh & of a creamy texture which was so delicious! You also get 6 large pieces of California roll and I decided on the yam rolls instead which are tasty. If you want miso soup, its $1.00. It doesn't take long to get your food. We will go back again soon...

Just not worth it...

I live near this place, so decided to try it today for a quick meal.

The service was horrible. The person who seated me, and took my order, was probably one of the owners' children, and looked disinterested, tossing the menu on the table as I sat down. It also immediately worries me what the food will be like when none of the staff are speaking Japanese.

I ordered 2 simple things - a sockeye roll, and katsu-don.

The sockeye roll was ok, primarily because of the fish - it being in season and all. Like many places though, they don't understand what the "su" in sushi is - the rice had little flavour, and was even a little undercooked. The sliced roll segments didn't stay together on the plate either.

Now I figure katsu-don was something that would be hard to screw up. How wrong I was. It looked ok when it arrived, with what appeared to be a nice deep-fried pork cutlet completely covering the rice in the bowl. The aroma of the sauce was about the right balance of sweet and salty. However, as soon as I picked up a piece of the katsu, my appetite dropped. The pork scallopini inside was the same thickness as the batter, so you were literally eating twice as much batter as pork. I really just can't see any justification for serving such garbage, especially considering pork is a very inexpensive meat. It was, truly, pathetic... not at all what a katsu-don should be.

Those two items and a pop cost about $11 less some change. I think it was worth more like $5.

Mixed Feelings

Ordered two items from their menu.

1. Sushi Special - Consisted of Miso Soup, California Roll, Yam Tempura Roll and Tuna Roll
2. Beef Teriyaki Bento - Consisted of Beef Teriyaki and Rice, Salad, Tempura and California Roll

First, the sushi special, it was mediocre at best. The california roll had little taste and left a lot to be desired. The yam tempura roll was not at all crunchy but somehow warm. The Miso soup was less than average for most places and the tuna roll seemed pre-made and wasn't fresh.

The beef teriyaki bento, however, was much better. The beef teriyaki itself was good along with the rice. The salad was on par with most places and was good (not too little or too much dressing). The california roll was the same as above. Lastly the tempura. It was made fresh (as in deep fried to order) so it is still crispy. It consisted of a prawn, slice of carrot, slice of cucumber and slice of yam. Other than the prawn and cucumber, the other two were pretty lack luster. I'm not sure what it was, but the other two just didn't seem fresh.

The ambiance is certainly nothing to really talk about but then again, I don't frequent places just for the ambiance. It's a fairly small place but nothing bad and nothing good.

Service was really fast from ordering to getting our food to paying the bill. There was no check-up or anything like that but the service overall was solid.

Fast Delivery with Tasty fresh Food!

I frequently ordered deelivery from here . This is definitely the best sushi in town. Because for $6.25 ($7 including tax) you can get a sushi feast! This special includes 3 rolls and miso soup. It's always enough for lunch and dinner (or lunch and after work snack, depending on hunger levels). They also have great tempura, crsipy fried temoura, so yummy! Great value and its worst of money! The price here are reasonable, and the sushi are big compare to others! I deinitely recommended!

Nothing outstanding, but better than suggested earlier

To start with: I hope most readers would just ignore reviews complaining about 'ugly waitresses' anyway. And even after having read the earlier reviews before going there, I was just not paranoid enough to remember to scan the room for security cameras (I'm sure this lack of paranoia on my part will have been recorded ;-)

Service was quick (both attention of waitress and delivery of food). Reducing this good impression was the waitresses' dislike for substitutions (quite common, unfortunately) and the waitresses' hard-to-describe laissez-faire attitude.
Neither food quality nor ambiance are anything to write home about (but neither is the lack thereof)

But we're not talking about the Ritz here. For a quite unsubstantial amount of money I'm sitting at my computer again well fed. So for anyone working in the area looking for a quick, cheap, uncomplicated lunch spot: Yes, I'd recommend this place.

The Worst Service in the WORLD!..like I'm not even joking!!

Me and my friend decided to try out this new location of sushi on broadway and commercial. As we walked into the door the two girls just stared at us, one of the waitress escorted us to a medium sized table, but one of the two girls told her to put us at a smaller table, but we requested to sit at the medium sized table. As we sat down it became a group discussion for them about us being picky about sitting at a smaller table. We were not greeted when we entered, no tea or water was served we had to ask, we didn't even get plates for our meal and we were sharing. On the side note the food came fairly fast, and it was eatable. When we were finished with our food we decided to sit there and chat as i looked up one of the mean girl stared at me and as i went back into my conversation with my friend the bill was already at our table we did not ask for the bill whatsover, so rude. Rudest young girls on earth and she was ugly too.

Decent Sushi, Crappy Take Out Service, Good Pricing
By comiccrow of Yaletown,Vancouver (15 Reviews)
Submitted Saturday, April 17, 2010 - 9:10pm [Dine in]

I popped in here for lunch last week, and ordered it to go. I made my order and found the pricing to be quite good for the special I chose as there are several. There were several people in the restaurant having lunch and I noticed the young girl filling their waters and coming around which seems to be the opposite of what everyone has said. The part that pissed me off was it seemed because I had already paid and they got my money they didn't care if I would have liked a cup of tea or water while I waited for my meal which took about 10 minutes. Almost every sushi place I visit offers water or tea while you wait. Don't expect that here. Once I got back to work and dove in I was pleasantly surprised. The rolls had a good taste and I enjoyed one of the best miso soups I have ever had. I ate a spicy dynamite roll, as well as a dynamite and spicy tuna cone and it was all up to par. The crappy thing is it's the only sushi place in that area so you're kind of at their mercy.

What happened to our old standby?
By Azzy Kimmel of Vancouver (Commercial Drive) (1 Review)

Broadway Stn Sushi was never the best sushi in Vancouver, but it was solid and certainly consistent.
New owners?

At any rate, over half of our takeout order was inedible.

Gomae is not 3-4 cubes of frozen spinach (umm, I buy it that way at Superstore) with sauce dumped on the top (stir it up at least!).

If prawn tempura is supposed to be raw, then kudos for them for getting it nice and crispy on the outside and raw on the inside. That's not how I like it, however. If what they were doing before was wrong, well, that's what I grew to expect.

Ordered deep fried chicken wings from the menu and received deep fried something, but not chicken and definitely not wings.

Yam roll was not what we expected. This had thin slices of yam inside a crispy tempura crust. The crunch was lovely, but what happened to that velevety smooth chunk of warm, sweet yam? This new one is not for me.

Very sad, won't be returning to a place we frequented at least 3x/month.

Cheap and great specials, but you get what you pay for!

Unenthused service and little-to-no ambiance, but cheap food and a large menu with lots of specials and boxes. Great vegetarian menu too, including interesting rolls like mango/avocado and carrot tempura. In terms of bang for buck, I would definitely return when I'm in the area. My vegetable roll was under $3 and much bigger than most places who charge around $4. Great for a quick meal or take-out when you're in the area but I wouldn't go here for a nice dinner out... try Samurai Sushi on Davie instead if you're looking for inexpensive sushi but a bit more ambiance and better service!

Worst Service Ever
By BearButter of East Vancouver, BC (1 Review)
Submitted Tuesday, January 17, 2012 - 10:00pm [Delivery]

I ordered from these people on a Tuesday night, I live pretty close but was feeling lazy. It took them an hour (possibly longer) for the sushi to arrive. When it did, we did not receive our full order but had been charged for the missing items. I called them back up and had to argue on the phone with the woman for far too long to get them to send me what I had already paid for. They were simply just not willing. I had to work far too hard to get something that I had already paid for. When the remaining food finally showed up, there was one knock at the door and when I opened it seconds later, the missing food was just hanging from the door knob. No greeting, no apology. Food wasn't even very good. Absolutely not worth it.

had a wonderful sauna and massage at SpaKwus so popped in for a snack next door.
ordered miso soup, Kappa roll and Dynamite sushi, appetizer tempura and tea. $10.08
and i couldnt have eaten another bite.
first, the tempura and tea were served immediately, and piping hot, i sipped my miso soup and the sushi arrived before i even tried the tempura. the prawn was still warm and crunchy in the dynamite, lots of avocado, creamy and fresh, the tempura was perfect, the kappa refreshing and my tea kept filled.
friendly pleasant service and other diners around me were enjoying lots of intriguing foods.

Terrible Service
By Jester of Vancouver (6 Reviews)
Submitted Tuesday, February 9, 2010 - 6:47pm [Dine in]

We have eaten here a few times. The food is ok at best as I haven't had anything really terrible, nor anything really great. I would say for the most part the rolls are on the smaller size, but they are cheaper than a lot of places - so it balances. I don't eat the raw stuff, so I can't comment on the freshness of that.

I do find the service is LACKING. The servers refuse to make eye contact when you are trying to get their attention. They just stay behind the counter and pretend not to notice.

And to tell the truth...what is up with the one MAYBE two pieces of ginger per plate??? Even if the plate has 3 rolls on it- it gets 1.5 pieces of ginger! And you basically have to flap your arms like a bird to get their attention if you are wanting more tea. Also, save yourself some time and just go to the cashier to get your bill.

This review is based on 3 visits, so I am sure it wasn't just an 'off' day.

I am sure we will be back because it is very close to our home - but only out of convenience.

Security Cameras

What's with the security cameras? Soooo creepy being watched while I eat. Am I going to steal chopsticks? That little bowl that the wasabi and soy sauce goes in? Are we in 1984?

And since I need 300 characters to publish this review, why is it more expensive to order the avocado yam tempura dragon roll than it is to order a yam tempura roll and an avocado roll? You could just put a piece of each in your mouth!
