Bon's is all about breakfast. Huge portions, not so huge prices.
Ok, less than $3 really. Bon's breakfast special costs $2.95, including tax. Is that amazing or what?
The food is what you'd expect on a breakfast platter - eggs, hashbrowns, toast, choice of ham/bacon/sausauge. Yes it only costs 2.95, but make no mistake, the portion is pretty big and the quality is great considering what you're paying.
Service is slow, because the place is always packed and there aren't enough servers around. I suspect they could hire more help, but they'd go out of business because they'd probably won't make enough money to cover labour costs.
Ambiance is what you'd expect from a diner. It's not overtly clean, but it's not the dumpiest dump I've been.
Just remember, a full meal only cost $2.95.
It's funny somebody from Burnaby talking about "East Van standards". You know what you're going to get at a joint like this before you walk in the door-cheap hangover breakfasts, average burgers, sandwiches, etc., and an-ahem-somewhat downscale decor. I decided to voyage into the unknown and went for steak and eggs, and it was just fine, as was the service. Sure it's "East Van" but there's precious little of that sort of establishment around anymore. There's precious little "Van" anymore, period, so catch the ambience while it's still around and before you're saying "I used to go there all the time-it was GREAT!!".
for as little as five bucks you can walk out full. The breakfast is a must have, the waiters are responsive and the owner is very nice. The interior decorating is just right, it sets the mood of a casual hang out place, which is great for a poor college student or a budget conscious person, even a patron who dines upscale will appreciate this little gem off broadway.
At Bon's you always know what you're gonna get. Order the special which is 2 eggs, toast, coffee, home fries, and your choice of meat and it's only $2.99. They also bring your bill with the food so it's efficient. Bon's is successful because of turnover. It's a decent sized place and it's always busy so they can afford cheap breakky. Don't go on a weekend unless you have atleast 1 1/2 hours to kill cuz you'll be waiting in line and the kitchen gets a little bogged down.
I'd suggest getting the baked ham with your meal. It's not extra $$ and it's not on the menu cuz it's only for the regulars that know they have it. But sometimes it takes a little longer to come out and the portion sizes are unpredictable. They also have a different style of home fries: "onion and garlic" which some like better.
I will caution you that it's not the cleanest place but the coffee is good and free flowing.
All in all Bon's will always be my number 1 choice for a solid diner breakfast if I'm in the area.
No where else can you order 2 eggs, 2 pieces of bacon/sausage/ham, 2 pieces of toast, and a whole lot of potatoes with a cup of coffee this good for 5 bucks. Plus you get a chance to see so many of the Vancouver breakfast scene's celebrities, including the owner himself, the surly lady who cleans tables and fills your coffee but never smiles, and the guy who dresses up in a cop uniform and while filling your cup always says "There you go buddy!"
Bon's is always busy on weekends. Perhaps it is the fact that breakfast consists of two eggs, two/three slices of bacon, toast and ample fried potatoes all for $2.95 including tax. Your greasy spoon for when you want it.
If you are here for their $2.95 breakfast than I wouldn't complain that much. The food is a bit greasy but that's what makes it taste good. The proportions are hearty and you'll feel full for the next 5 to 8 hours. The servers.. what can I say? They do their job and that's way more than what you should expect. You'll know what I mean if you've been to Chinese restaurants.
Been there twice. Very busy place...probably because you get a mountain of decent-tasting food for very cheap. 2.95$ all-day breakfast special gives you more food than the similar deals that other greasy spoons will give. The servers are friendly once they finally notice you... I have one complaint about their fruit cup..mine tasted fishy as if it were prepared on a contaminated cutting board or stored in a fridge with other smelly things abound. Ah well.
I'll first admit that Bon's is not for you if you expect a clean environment. Don't go looking at every nook and cranny cause you're going to find something.
Price - The $2.95 breakfast is really worth it but all the other food is cheap and most of it decent and tax is all included.
Portions - You won't leave hungry
Coffee - I don't drink coffee but more than a handful of people I know say the coffee is good.
Sanitation - It's not clean. The tables, seats, walls, napkin dispenser, ummmm everywhere and everything. In and around the winter it will smell usually like bleach and it's humid which makes it even more gross.
Service - It's freaking busy so service isn't so great. They will not serve you water even if you ask for it. It's like an unwritten rule that you get your own water. That's fine, but at least let people know instead of not bringing the water.
Busy - If you go on the weekends during morning and lunch you will have to wait close to half hour and another half hour for you food.
Drinks - Besides coffee their drinks suck. It's not real coke and it's not even good cola. The juices are equally as crappy.
All the smell and dirt will never stop this place from being busy. $2.95 trumps everything else. The food is very good for the price. The only things that will stop me from going to this place is when it's busy and when I don't feel like being unhealthy.
This place is family run and may seem a little run down but the value is definitely in the food. For 2.95, you get a breakfast that is enough to fill up a grown man and you can order it anytime of the day. The burgers aren't bad as well but this is one of those dives that has greasy everything. If you are in for a good hearty meal, this place is for you. The fish and chips aren't bad at all either.
Okay if you like to sit in a place where the cleanliness is questionable, like to wait forever for your food, and like to eat hash browns that are basically big chunks of dry potato.
It seems like more of a place to go and read the paper for free, and I guess the breakfast for $2.99 is cheap enough and filling if you are really hungry.
Bon's does a huge breaky for $2.99.
You get eggs, hash, toast and bacon or whatever.
Its a big grease-o-rama-rama.
It tastes fine, people obviously like it cause theres a huge line up out the door on weekends.
Its your duty as a vancouverite or greater vancouverite to at least try this place.
And live without regret...Just a bloated tummy and a greasy chin! :)
I have eaten at Bon's many times. The breakfast is adequate, although the hash browns are really nothing more than smashed boiled potatoes that were immersed in grease and then on to the grill for 30 seconds. The service, considering the number of patrons, is not bad. The best time to go is pretty well any weekday morning. Avoid weekends, the place is awash with hung over, smelly 20 somethings.
This is one of the dirtiest restaurants I have ever been to. The service is so bad, diners get up and get their own coffee refills. You half expect them to walk into the kitchen to get their orders.
We waited 30 minutes for a table on a busy Sunday morning. Then we waited another 45 minutes for our breakfast.
The ambience is not charming. The place is a dive. Our server dropped a pile of cutlery on our table rather than setting the table.
And guys....please replace the crappy, rusty sink in the men's room. You can afford it.
This place is always PACKED, filthy, and horrible service... And don't drink the water... HOWEVER! 2.95 breakfast!!! You get 2 eggs, 2 sausage, 2 toast, and some good hasbrowns.. BOTTOM LINE: I go to Denny's and get diarrhea, go to Bon's, I don't. Good food, good price. Don't expect service or cleanliness.. can't have it all. Overall. I SAY GO! Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. BON'S :)
Bon's has been in my neighbourhood for as long as I can remember. For the last 27 years at least. It's not until the past 7 years or so that people started getting excited about a "new" cheap breakfast hangout, and I went to go eat there for the first time recently.
Well, it looks like the interior hasn't changed in the three decades. Dim yellow light, and worn out mismatched furnature, but it's not too bad to deal with. A friend and I went on a Saturday morning at 9:00am. There was a small line of about four people ahead of us, and the place was pretty packed. We had to wait around 5 minutes for someone to acknowledge us for seating, and were pointed to our spot a little while later. The table top looked like it was freshly wiped with a damp towel, but it later turned out that it was grease smears because the streaks never dried away. Things are a little sticky to the touch.
I quickly thumbed through the menu to see what they had, since it was my first time, and they had burgers, seafood, and pasta, but at not so cheap prices. At least for a dive spot. I decided on the ubiquitous All-Day-Breakfast. Food took about 40 minutes to come. Not sure why griddle food takes so long, especially when everyone's getting the same 4 food items... Food was pretty decent, albeit a little on the greasy side. The toast is real low grade, like Sunbeam or McGavin's, and I found the eggs to be small. I don't eat much, but I didn't really get full off of the meal like I do after other breakfasts. Potatoes were good, but a number of them were on the charred side. Don't expect any service beyond having someone hand you a menu. I asked for a water with my meal, and it never came. Everyone there (including my friend who's been there a few times) refills their own coffee at the station.
Decent food, extremely cheap. Just be prepared for a wait.
This is a run down sort of White trash place but, It has very cheap food, You can get steak and Lobster for $16! I won't lie, I go there all the time. Bon know's my boyfriend and my name. Sometimes I feel like I'm walking into Cheers!! It's great! You get what you pay for! I like all the servers there except there is one girl that is pretty big and always wears a shit that her gunt is hanging out not really what you want to see while you're eating! Not only that but, she is really, really RUDE!!!!
...eat here at least once...for sure on a Sunday morning when there's a eclectic mix of young kids hung over and munching their way out of headaches, families on their way out for a day of fun, and the old regulars enjoying a cup of joe.
Great breakfast. I'd stay away from mostly everything else on the menu, but good meal for three dollars and a tip. :)
2.95 for breakfast......come on you cant find a better deal anywhere. friendly environment for all, classic movie posters up on the walls. bons is a pretty busy place tho, its always full and yea....there will be a long wait time for your food but its totally worth it. Hugh plate of breakfast that will make anyone full.......but warning the food is pretty greasy tho.
I love coming here, I recommend this place to anyone who wants a big portion for cheap. I would say you should get the all day breakfast special, comes with hashbrowns, bacon or sausages, eggs & toast. This place can use a few touch ups here and there, but overall it's a great place if you want a cheap meal.
